The Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) is an intergovernmental organization formed between countries of the former Soviet Union in 1991. It has 9 member states including Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Armenia, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Moldova. The CIS aims to be a regional organization promoting cooperation in economic, political and defense issues among its members.
