The first European colonies in North America were established in the late 16th and early 17th centuries by England, France, Spain, and the Netherlands. The English established colonies along the eastern coast of what is now the United States, including the Jamestown colony in Virginia in 1607 and the Plymouth colony in Massachusetts in 1620. These early colonies struggled to survive due to lack of food and supplies and conflicts with local Native American tribes.
