Joseph and Mary traveled from Nazareth to Bethlehem for a census. When they arrived in Bethlehem, all the inns were full so they stayed in a stable. Mary gave birth to a baby boy. Shepherds in a nearby field were visited by angels announcing the birth. They went to Bethlehem and found Joseph, Mary, and the newborn baby Jesus in the manger, as the angels had said. Many shepherds came to see the baby and word spread about the birth of the Messiah.
