Painting
Chinese painting is one of the oldest
continuous artistic traditions in the world.
Painting in the traditional style is known today
in Chinese as guó huà, meaning "national
painting" or "native painting", as opposed to
Western styles of art which became popular in
China in the 20th century.
Key Points
Harmony - A visual design connotes all parts of
the image relate to and complement each other.
Calligraphy - An ornamental writing usually done
with a pen in the West and with a brush in China
and Japan.
Chinese landscapes often reflect nature.
Three major components of landscape painting:
Nature, Heaven, and humankind.
The chinese concept that highlights the harmony
between man and nature is tianren heyi.
Korean
Painting
The primary influence of Korean paintings were
Chinese paintings. However the common subjects of
Korean paintings are landscapes, facial textures,
Buddhist themes, and an emphasis on celestial
observation in keeping with the rigid development of
Korean astronomy.

The history of Korean painting dates back to 108 C.E
Joseon dynasty the primary influence of Korean
paintings were Chinese paintings.
When artists want more than one copy of an
artwork, they makes prints. A print is a mark
or shape made on a flat surface by inked
block, a pierce of carved wood or linoleum,
or by a plate-a thin sheet of material like
metal.

Printmaking
Key Points
Woodblock printing is a technique for
printing text, images, or patterns being
widely used throughout East Asian countries.
This method adapted in Japan during Edo
period (1603-1897).
Printmaking is the process by which different
types of prints are made.
Ukiyo-e is produce by using different media,
including painting. Also known as the best
and popular style of Japanese art.
Woodblock printmaking shows scenes in
harmony and carefree everyday living.
East Asian
Architectural
Designs
East Asian temples and houses have rhythmically
arranged sweeping roofs because they believe that
it will protect them from the elements of water,
wind, and fire. Buddhists also believe that it helps
ward off evil spirits which are deemed to be
straight lines. The figures at the tips are called roof
guards.
Temples are usual sights in East Asia.

Three main types of
roof in Chinese
architecture
1. Straight Inclined - This is more economical
for common Chinese architecture. This is
commonly seen among the house roofs of
commoners, merchants, and farmers.
2. Multi-Inclines - These are roofs with two or
more inclined sections. These are used for
residences of wealthy Chinese.
3. Sweeping - These are roofs with curves that
rise at the corners. These are usually
reserved for temples and palaces, although
these may also be found in the homes of the
wealthy.
