CHILD MORBIDITY AND
MORTALITY RATES
MORBIDITY
 Morbidity refers to deviation from a
state of physical or mental wellbeing as
a result of disease, injury or impairment.
 In a given population, morbidity for a
given time, may be measured in terms of
incidence, in terms of prevalence.
Incidence
Rate
Number of new cases of a disease
occurring in population at a
specified period of time
Number of person exposed to
the risk of developing the disease
during that time period
1000
Prevalence
Rate
Number of cases of disease
present in population at a
specified period of time
Number of person at risk of
having the disease at that
specified time
1000
MORTALITY
 Mortality rate, or death rate, is a measure of the
number of deaths in a particular population, scaled
to the size of that population, per unit of time.
Total no. of death in population at a
specified time period
Death rate =
Total population at that specified time
1000
Maternal
Mortality
Rate
Total no. of female death due to
pregnancy, childbirth or within
42 days of delivery in an area in a
given year
Total no. of live births in the
same area and year
1000
Maternal Mortality Rate
