1. Raise the temperature of ring (34) to a maximum temperature of 135° C (275° F). Install
ring (34) onto the spindle.

2. Install bearing sleeve (31) on the spindle. Make sure that bearing sleeve (31) is seated on the
spindle. Use Tooling (B) to install seal (30).
Note: Use a driver that is nearly the same diameter as the outside diameter of the metal seal
case. Do not apply excessive force on a seal that is fully seated. Excessive force may deform
the seal case. Deforming the seal case may cause the seal to leak.

5. 5. Use a depth micrometer to measure the distance from the surface of Duo-Cone seal (33) to
the surface of hub in four places. The maximum allowable difference in the four
measurements is 1.0 mm (0.04 inch). If an adjustment must be made to the seal, use Tooling
(F) to adjust Duo-Cone seal (30).

NOTICE
The use of liquid nitrogen is not approved by Caterpillar. Use a freezer
set to −29 °C (−20 °F) to lower the temperature of the components.
Refer to Reusability of Tapered Bearings, SEBF8190.
6. If bearing cups (28) and (29) were removed. Lower the temperature of bearing cups (28)
and (29) and install bearing cups (28) and (29) in the hub. Make sure that bearing cups (28)
and (29) are fully seated to the hub.
7. Use Tooling (F) to install the Duo-Cone seal (27) in the hub.
8. Use a depth micrometer and measure the distance between the surface of Duo-Cone seal
(27) and the surface of the hub at four places. The maximum allowable difference in the
four measurements is 1.0 mm (0.04 inch). If an adjustment is necessary, use Tooling (F) to
adjust Duo-Cone seal (27).

approximately 850 kg (1875 lb). Lower hub (25) in position on hub (26).

Note: The torque for bolts (17) is not the final torque. This torque is only for bearing
installation.
12. Install retainer (18) and bolts (17). Rotate hub (25) and tighten bolts (17) to locate the
bearing in the correct position. Tighten bolts (17) to a torque of 215 ± 40 N·m
(160 ± 30 lb ft). Leave retainer (18) in place until the bearing has become cool. Remove
retainer (18) and Tooling (G).

13. Attach Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to hub (21). The weight of hub (21) is
approximately 84 kg (185 lb). Put hub (21) in position in gear (22) and install ring (23).

gear (22) is approximately 326 kg (720 lb). Put hub (21) and gear (22) in position in the
final drive.

hub (21). If pins (20) are not below the face of support hub (21). The bearing cone must be
pushed in with Tooling (G) before the retainer is installed.

16. Install bearing (19) in retainer (18). Install retainer (18) and bolts (17) to hold the hub in
position. Tighten bolts (17) to a torque of 270 ± 40 N·m (200 ± 30 lb ft).

Install shafts (13) until the small end of shafts (13) extends 0.08 ± 0.05 mm
(0.003 ± 0.002 inch) past the surface of the carrier. After installation, there should be metal
to metal contact between shafts (13).

22. Put retainers (12) in position and install bolts (11). Tighten bolts (11) to a torque of
240 ± 40 N·m (175 ± 30 lb ft).
23. After four retainers (12) have been installed, use a suitable press to push retainers (12) even
with the surface of the carrier.

above the hub. Remove Tooling (H) and fully install carrier (7).

35. Put the O-ring seals in position in retainers (3).
36. Put retainers (3) in position on the shafts and install the bolts that hold the retainers in place.
Tighten the bolts to a torque of 240 ± 40 N·m (175 ± 30 lb ft).
37. After retainers (3) have been installed, use a press and push retainers (3) even with the
surface of the carriers.

17. 5. Install bolts (7). Tighten bolts (7) to a torque of 1150 ± 150 N·m (850 ± 110 lb ft).

sprocket segments. Tighten bolts (2) to a torque of 870 ± 70 N·m (640 ± 50 lb ft). Torque

filling procedures.

5. Remove bolts (5) that hold the steering clutch and brake to the main frame. Remove the
final drive and the steering clutch and brake as an assembly. The weight of the final drive
and steering clutch and brake is approximately 2665 kg (5865 lb).

7. Remove bolts (4) that hold steering clutch and brake (7) to the final drive.
8. Attach a suitable lifting device and Tooling (B) to steering clutch and brake (7). Remove

(7) is approximately 454 kg (1001 lb).
