Always wear protective gloves when handling parts that have been
heated.

1. Raise the temperature of ring (34) to a maximum temperature of 135° C (275° F). Install
ring (34) onto the spindle.
2. Install bearing sleeve (31) on the spindle. Make sure that bearing sleeve (31) is seated on the
spindle. Use Tooling (B) to install seal (30).
Note: Use a driver that is nearly the same diameter as the outside diameter of the metal seal
case. Do not apply excessive force on a seal that is fully seated. Excessive force may deform
the seal case. Deforming the seal case may cause the seal to leak.

3. Raise the temperature of bearing (32) to a maximum temperature of 135° C (275° F) to
install bearing (32).
Note: Before installation of any Duo-Cone seals, refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Duo-
Cone Conventional Seals - Install".
4. Use Tooling (F) to install Duo-Cone seal (33).

5. Use a depth micrometer to measure the distance from the surface of Duo-Cone seal (33) to
the surface of hub in four places. The maximum allowable difference in the four
measurements is 1.0 mm (0.04 inch). If an adjustment must be made to the seal, use Tooling
(F) to adjust Duo-Cone seal (30).
NOTICE
The use of liquid nitrogen is not approved by Caterpillar. Use a freezer
set to −29 °C (−20 °F) to lower the temperature of the components.
Refer to Reusability of Tapered Bearings, SEBF8190.
6. If bearing cups (28) and (29) were removed. Lower the temperature of bearing cups (28)
and (29) and install bearing cups (28) and (29) in the hub. Make sure that bearing cups (28)
and (29) are fully seated to the hub.
7. Use Tooling (F) to install the Duo-Cone seal (27) in the hub.
8. Use a depth micrometer and measure the distance between the surface of Duo-Cone seal
(27) and the surface of the hub at four places. The maximum allowable difference in the
four measurements is 1.0 mm (0.04 inch). If an adjustment is necessary, use Tooling (F) to
adjust Duo-Cone seal (27).

9. Attach Tooling (E) and a suitable lifting device to hub (25). The weight of hub (25) is
approximately 850 kg (1875 lb). Lower hub (25) in position on hub (26).
10. Raise the temperature of bearing cone (24) to a maximum temperature of 135° C (275° F).
Put bearing cone (24) in position on hub (26).
11. Put Tooling (G) in position while bearing cone (24) is still hot.

Note: The torque for bolts (17) is not the final torque. This torque is only for bearing
installation.
12. Install retainer (18) and bolts (17). Rotate hub (25) and tighten bolts (17) to locate the
bearing in the correct position. Tighten bolts (17) to a torque of 215 ± 40 N·m
(160 ± 30 lb ft). Leave retainer (18) in place until the bearing has become cool. Remove
retainer (18) and Tooling (G).
13. Attach Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to hub (21). The weight of hub (21) is
approximately 84 kg (185 lb). Put hub (21) in position in gear (22) and install ring (23).
14. Attach Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to hub (21). The weight of hub (21) and
gear (22) is approximately 326 kg (720 lb). Put hub (21) and gear (22) in position in the
final drive.

15. Install pins (20). Use a straight edge to check that pins (20) are below the face of support
hub (21). If pins (20) are not below the face of support hub (21). The bearing cone must be
pushed in with Tooling (G) before the retainer is installed.
16. Install bearing (19) in retainer (18). Install retainer (18) and bolts (17) to hold the hub in
position. Tighten bolts (17) to a torque of 270 ± 40 N·m (200 ± 30 lb ft).

17. Use a feeler gauge to measure the distance between pins (20) and retainer (18). The
clearance must be 0.08 ± 0.05 mm (0.003 ± 0.002 inch). There must be metal to metal
contact between the support hub and the retainer.
NOTICE

18. If the bearing cups were removed from gears (14), lower the temperature of the bearing cups
and install the bearing cups in gears (14).
19. Put bearing cones (15) in position in gears (14).
20. Put bearing cones (15) and gears (14) in position in the carrier.
21. Lower the temperature of shafts (13). Use a suitable press to install shafts (13) in the carrier.
Install shafts (13) until the small end of shafts (13) extends 0.08 ± 0.05 mm
(0.003 ± 0.002 inch) past the surface of the carrier. After installation, there should be metal
to metal contact between shafts (13).
22. Put retainers (12) in position and install bolts (11). Tighten bolts (11) to a torque of
240 ± 40 N·m (175 ± 30 lb ft).
23. After four retainers (12) have been installed, use a suitable press to push retainers (12) even
with the surface of the carrier.

24. If washers (10) have been removed, install washers (10) in each end of gear (9).
25. Attach a suitable lifting device to carrier (7). Lower carrier (7) into position on gear (9).
26. Install spiral lock ring (8) to hold gear (9) in position in carrier (7).

27. Put gear (16) in position in carrier (7).
28. Install Tooling (H) to hold gear (16) in position in carrier (7).
29. Attach Tooling (C) and a suitable lifting device to carrier (7). The weight of carrier (7) is
approximately 185 kg (408 lb).
Note: Tooling (H) must be removed before carrier (7) is installed in the final drive.
30. Lower carrier (7) in the final drive until carrier (7) is approximately 25.4 mm (1.00 inch)
above the hub. Remove Tooling (H) and fully install carrier (7).
31. If the bearing cups were removed from gear (5), lower the temperature of the bearing cups
and install the bearing cups in gears (5).
32. Put bearing cones (6) in position in gears (5).

33. Put gears (5) and the bearing cones in position in the carrier.
NOTICE
34. Lower the temperature of shafts (4). Use a suitable press to install shafts (4) in carrier (1)
with gears (5). Install shafts (4) until the small end of shafts (4) extends 0.08 ± 0.05 mm
(0.003 ± 0.002 inch) past the surface of the carrier. There must be metal to metal contact
between shafts (4) and the retainers.
35. Put the O-ring seals in position in retainers (3).
36. Put retainers (3) in position on the shafts and install the bolts that hold the retainers in place.
Tighten the bolts to a torque of 240 ± 40 N·m (175 ± 30 lb ft).
37. After retainers (3) have been installed, use a press and push retainers (3) even with the
surface of the carriers.

38. Install the O-ring seal on carrier (1).
39. Attach Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to carrier (1). The weight of carrier (1) is
approximately 431 kg (950 lb). Lower carrier (1) into position in the final drive.
40. Install bolts (2) to hold carrier (1) in place. Tighten bolts (2) to a torque of 1050 ± 150 N·m
(774 ± 111 lb ft).
End By:
a. Install the final drive.

1. The O-ring seal must be positioned on the steering clutch and the brake housing.

2. Attach Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to final drive (3). The weight of final drive
(3) is approximately 2211 kg (4874 lb). Bolts (4) must be adjusted with the head of the bolts
against final drive (3).
3. Install Tooling (C) in the main frame case.
4. Put final drive (3) in position on Tooling (C) and install bolts (6).

5. Install bolts (7). Tighten bolts (7) to a torque of 1150 ± 150 N·m (850 ± 110 lb ft).
6. Remove Tooling (A). Apply Tooling (B) to the threads of bolts (2). Install bolts (2) in the
sprocket segments. Tighten bolts (2) to a torque of 870 ± 70 N·m (640 ± 50 lb ft). Torque
bolts (2) by an additional 120 degrees.
Note: Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual for all fluid capacities and proper
filling procedures.
End By:
a. Install the outer axles. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Axle-Install".
b. Connect the track. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Track-Connect".
c. Install the ladder. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Ladder- Install".

Start By:
a. Separate the track.
b. Remove the axles.
c. If necessary remove the ladder.

Make sure the short support of Tooling (A) is on the bottom and the
long support is on the top when distances (X) and (Y) are made.
1. Adjust bolts (1) on Tooling (A) until Dimension (X) is 114.3 mm (4.50 inch) and
Dimension (Y) is 25.4 mm (1.00 inch).
2. Remove five bolts from the sprocket segments. Attach a suitable lifting device and Tooling
(A) on final drive (3).
3. Adjust bolts (2) until the heads of bolts (2) are against final drive (3).

NOTICE
Do not remove three bolts (4) that hold the steering clutch and brake
together.
4. Remove bolts (6) that hold the final drive and the steering clutch and brake to the main
frame. Do not remove bolts (4).
5. Remove bolts (5) that hold the steering clutch and brake to the main frame. Remove the
final drive and the steering clutch and brake as an assembly. The weight of the final drive
and steering clutch and brake is approximately 2665 kg (5865 lb).
6. Remove the O-ring seals from the face of steering clutch and brake (7).
7. Remove bolts (4) that hold steering clutch and brake (7) to the final drive.
8. Attach a suitable lifting device and Tooling (B) to steering clutch and brake (7). Remove
steering clutch and brake (7) from the final drive. The weight of steering clutch and brake
(7) is approximately 454 kg (1001 lb).

9. Remove the O-ring seal from steering clutch and brake (7).

Start By:
A. Remove the steering clutches and brakes. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Steering
Clutch and Brake - Remove".

1. Remove bolts (1) and retainer plate (2) .
2. Remove spool (3) from sleeve (4). Use Tooling (A) to remove retaining rings (5). Remove
sleeve (4) from retainer plate (2) .
