Gear Pump (Aftercooler) - Remove

Removal Procedure
Start By:
A. Remove the fuel transfer pump. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Fuel Transfer Pump -
Remove and Install".
Personal injury can result from hydraulic oil pressure and hot oil.
Hydraulic oil pressure can remain in the hydraulic system after the
engine has been stopped. Serious injury can be caused if this pressure is
not released before any service is done on the hydraulic system.
Make sure all of the attachments have been lowered, oil is cool before
removing any components or lines. Remove the oil filler cap only when
the engine is stopped, and the filler cap is cool enough to touch with
your bare hand.
NOTICE
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during
performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair
of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers
before opening any compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop
Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain
fluids on Caterpillar products.
Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
1. Put identification marks on all lines and all hoses for installation purposes. Plug all lines and
all hoses. This will prevent fluid loss and contamination of the hydraulic system.

2. Remove coupling (1) from gear pump (2) .
3. Disconnect two hoses (3) from gear pump (2) and lay the hoses aside.

4. Remove two bolts (4) and the washers in order to remove gear pump (2) from the machine.
5. Remove O-ring seal (5) from gear pump (2) .

Start By:
A. Remove the gear pump (Aftercooler). Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Gear Pump
(Aftercooler) - Remove".
1. Remove O-ring seal (1) and two elbows (2) from gear pump (3) .

2. Place the gear pump on suitable cribbing and remove adapter (4). Remove four bolts (5) in
order to remove plate (6) from housing (7) .
3. Remove two dowels (8), seal (9) and pressure plate (10) from housing (7) .

4. Remove seal (11) and backup seal (12) from pressure plate (10) .
5. Remove gear shaft (13) and idler gear (14) from housing (7) .
6. Remove pressure plate (15) from housing (7). Refer to step 4 in order to remove the seals.

7. Remove housing (7) from flange (16) .
8. Remove seal (17) from housing (7) .

9. Use a suitable pin punch in order to remove lip seal (19) from flange (16). Use tool (A) and
remove two rings (20). Use the pin punch to remove lip seal (21) .

1. Clean all parts and inspect all parts. If any parts are worn or damaged, use new Caterpillar
parts for replacement.
2. On assembly, lubricate all internal components with the lubricant that is being sealed.

3. Use tool (B) to install lip seal (21) with the lip of the seal toward flange (16). Use tool (A)
to install two ring (20) into the ring grooves in flange (16). Use tool (B) to install lip seal
(19) with the lip of the seal away from flange (16) .
4. Install two dowels (18) into flange (16) .

5. Install seal (17) into housing (7) .
6. Align housing (7) with the dowel in flange (16) and position the housing on the flange.
7. Install pressure plate (15) into housing (7). Refer to step 9 for the installation of the seals.

8. Install idler gear (14) and gear shaft (13) into housing (7) .
9. Install seal (11) and backup seal (12) into pressure plate (10) .
10. Carefully install pressure plate (10) onto housing (7). Install seal (9) and two dowels (8) .

11. Align plate (6) with the two dowels in housing (7) and install four bolts (5). Tighten the
bolts to a torque of 44.5 ± 3.5 N·m (33 ± 2.5 lb ft). Install adapter (4) .
12. Install two elbows (2) and O-ring seal (1) to gear pump (3) .
End By: Install the gear pump (Aftercooler). Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Gear Pump
(Aftercooler) - Install".

Installation Procedure
1. Clean all parts and inspect all parts. If any parts are worn or damaged, use new Caterpillar

2. Install O-ring seal (5) onto gear pump (2). Apply a light coat of the lubricant that is being
sealed to the O-ring seal.

3. Align the splines on the shaft of gear pump (2) with the spline in the engine drive train and
install the gear pump. Install two bolts (4) and the washers.
4. Connect two hoses (3) to gear pump (2) .

5. Install coupling (1) into gear pump (2) .
End By:
a. Install the fuel transfer pump. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Fuel Transfer Pump -
Remove and Install".
b. Check the oil level in the steering system. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual,
"Steering System Oil Level - Check".

A. Tilt the Cab. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Cab - Tilt".
NOTICE

of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers
before opening any compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids.
Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop
Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain
fluids on Caterpillar products.
Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

The gear pump for the hydraulic fan on the 740 Articulated Truck is located on the back of the
piston pump for the steering under the cab on the right side of the machine.
The cab has been removed for photographic clarity.
1. Loosen the two retaining nuts and disconnect two hoses (1) from gear pump (2) .
2. Remove two bolts (3) with the washers in order to remove gear pump (2) from piston pump
(4). Remove the O-ring seal from pump (2) (not shown). The weight of the gear pump is
12.5 kg (28 lb).
