NOTICE
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during
performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair
of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers
before opening any compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids.
Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool
Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on
Cat®
products.
Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

1. Attach a suitable lifting device to tank assembly (24) and position tank assembly (24). The
weight of tank assembly (24) is approximately 194 kg (427 lb). Install bolts (23).
2. Connect hose assemblies (21). Install bolt (22).
3. Position bracket (20) and install bolts (19). Connect hose assembly (18).

4. Position bracket (15) and install bolts (14). Connect cable assemblies (16). Install bolts (17).
5. Position support assembly (12) and install bolts (11) and (13).
6. Install tube assembly (10). Connect hose assemblies (9).

7. Position plate assembly (8) and install bolts (7).
8. Position cover (5) and install bolts (6).
9. Position step (4) and install bolts (3).

10. Install bolts (1). Remove the suitable cribbing from fender (2).
11. Fill the hydraulic system with oil. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Hydraulic
System Oil - Change".
12. Turn the battery disconnect switch to the ON position. Refer to Operation and Maintenance
Manual, "Battery Disconnect Switch".
13. Lower the hood.
End By:
a. Install the crankcase guards. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Crankcase Guard -
Remove and Install".

Removal Procedure
Start By:
a. Release the hydraulic system pressure. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Hydraulic
System Pressure - Release".
NOTICE

before opening any compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids.
Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool
Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on
Cat®
products.
Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Note: Put identification marks on all hoses, on all hose assemblies, on all wires, and on all tube
assemblies for installation purposes. Plug all hose assemblies and all tube assemblies. This helps
to prevent fluid loss, and this helps to keep contaminants from entering the system.

1. Tilt the cab. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Cab - Tilt".
2. Remove bolts (1) and bracket (2).
3. Disconnect four hose assemblies (3). Disconnect tube assembly (4).
4. Remove bolts (5). Use two people in order to remove piston pump (6). The weight of piston
pump (6) is approximately 34 kg (76 lb).

5. Remove O-ring seal (7) from piston pump (6).

a. Remove the piston pump. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Piston Pump (Brake,
Ejector and Fan) - Remove".

1. Remove socket head bolts (3). Remove pressure and flow compensator valve (2) from pump
(1).
2. Remove O-ring seals (4) from pressure and flow compensator valve (2).
3. Position flow compensator valve (2) in a soft jawed vise.
4. Remove plug (13) and seal (14) from pressure and flow compensator valve (2).

Personal injury can result from being struck by parts propelled by a
released spring force.
Make sure to wear all necessary protective equipment.
Follow the recommended procedure and use all recommended tooling to
release the spring force.
5. Remove plug (17) from pressure and flow compensator valve (2).
6. Remove cap nut (12), seal (11), adjustment nut (10), seal (9) and adjustment screw (18)
from plug (17).
7. Remove O-ring seal (16) from plug (17).
8. Remove seat (15), spring (8), spring (7), spring retainer (6) and valve stem (5) from pressure
and flow compensator valve (2).
9. Remove plug (26) and seal (27) from pressure and flow compensator valve (2).

10. Remove plug (20) from pressure and flow compensator valve (2).
11. Remove cap nut (25), seal (24), adjustment nut (22), seal (21) and adjustment screw (23)
from plug (20).
12. Remove O-ring seal (19) from plug (20).
13. Remove seat (32), spring (31), spring (30), spring retainer (29) and valve stem (28) from
pressure and flow compensator valve (2).
Personal injury can result from parts and/or covers under spring
pressure.
Spring force will be released when covers are removed.
Be prepared to hold spring loaded covers as the bolts are loosened.
14. Remove socket head bolts (35). Remove break off plug (34) from pump housing (33).

15. Remove O-ring seals (37) from break off plug (34).
16. Remove piston guide (36) and plunger guide (38) from break off plug (34).
17. Remove bearing cup (39) and spacer (40) from break off plug (34).
18. Remove pin (41) from break off plug (34).

19. Remove O-ring seal (46) from pump housing (33).
20. Remove spring (44) and control piston (43) from the swashplate assembly.
21. Remove valve plate (45) from the barrel.
22. Remove roller bearing cone (42) from the pump shaft.
23. Remove spacer (48) and barrel assembly (47) from pump housing (33).
24. Remove bearing (52), retainer plate (49) and nine piston assemblies (50) from swashplate
assembly (51).

25. Remove swashplate assembly (51) from pump housing (33).
26. Remove pump shaft (53) and roller bearing cone (54) from pump housing (33). Remove
roller bearing cone (54) from pump shaft (53).
27. Remove O-ring seal (56) from pump housing (33).
28. Remove shaft seal (55) from pump housing (33).

29. Remove bearings (57) from pump housing (33).
30. Remove shaft seal (59) from pump housing (33).
31. Use Tooling (A) in order to remove ring (60) from pump housing (33).
32. Remove roller bearing cup (58) from pump housing (33).
33. Remove O-ring plug (61) and the O-ring seal.

34. Remove pin (62) from barrel (47).
35. Position barrel (47) into a suitable press, as shown. Use Tooling (B) and the press in order
to compress spring (64).
36. Use Tooling (C) to remove ring (63). Remove spring (64) and spring seat (65) from barrel
assembly (47).

Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before assembly, all parts should be thoroughly cleaned
in cleaning fluid. Allow the parts to air dry. Wiping cloths or rags should not be used to dry parts.
Lint may be deposited on the parts which may cause later trouble. Inspect all parts. If any parts are
worn or damaged, use new Caterpillar parts for replacement.
Note: Apply a light film of 10W oil to all components before assembly.
1. Check all of the O-ring seals and the components for wear or damage. Replace the
components, if necessary.
2. Lubricate all of the O-ring seals lightly with the lubricant that is being sealed.

3. Position the gap in ring (60) over the weep hole. Use Tooling (A) to install ring (60) into
pump housing (33).
4. Install roller bearing cup (58) into pump housing (33).
5. Install shaft seal (59) into pump housing (33). Install lip seal (59).
6. Invert pump housing (33).
7. Install shaft seal (55) into pump housing (33). Install lip seal (55).
8. Install O-ring seal (56) onto pump housing (33).
9. Invert pump housing (33) and support the pump housing on suitable cribbing.

10. Install bearing cone (54) onto pump shaft (53). Install roller bearing cone (54) and pump
shaft (53) into pump housing (33).
11. Use the following steps to determine the preload on the bearing of the pump assembly.
a. Install adjustment spacer (48) and roller bearing cone (42) on pump shaft (53).
