Start By:
A. Separate the transfer gears from the transmission. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly ,
"Torque Converter, Transmission and Transfer Gear - Separate".
B. Remove the transmission hydraulic control valve. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly ,
"Transmission Hydraulic Control Valve - Remove".

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during
performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair
of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers
before opening any compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids.
Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service
Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain
fluids on Caterpillar products.
Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

1. Install Tooling (F) and a suitable lifting device onto transmission assembly (1) . Position
transmission assembly (1) onto Tooling (A) . The transmission assembly weighs
approximately 703 kg (1550 lb).

2. Remove bolts (2) . Remove the transmission assembly from transmission housing (3) .
Position the transmission assembly ontosuitable blocks.
3. Remove bolts (4) from clutch housing (5) .
Personal injury can result from being struck by parts propelled by a
released spring force.
Make sure to wear all necessary protective equipment.
Follow the recommended procedure and use all recommended tooling to
release the spring force.

4. Use Tooling (B) in order to hold the piston into clutch housing (5) . Install Tooling (F) and a
suitable lifting device onto clutch housing (5) . Remove clutch housing (5) from the
transmission assembly. The weight of clutch housing (5) is approximately 27 kg (60 lb).
5. Remove piston (6) from clutch housing (5) . Remove a seal ring (7) from piston (6) and
from clutch housing (5) .
Note: Friction discs and clutch plates that are removed from each clutch housing should be
kept with the correct clutch housing. Mixing the clutch plates and friction discs may cause
improper operation of the transmission or damage to the transmission.
6. Remove springs (8) , dowels (9) , friction discs (10) and clutch plates (11) from clutch
housing (12) .

7. Remove ring gear (13) from clutch housing (12) .
8. Use Tooling (B) in order to hold the piston into clutch housing (12) . Install Tooling (F) and
a suitable lifting device onto clutch housing (12) . Remove clutch housing (12) from
housing assembly (14) . The weight of clutch housing (12) is approximately 27 kg (60 lb).

9. Remove piston (15) from clutch housing (12) . Remove seal rings (16) from piston (15) and
10. Remove springs (17) , dowels (18) , friction discs (19) and clutch plates (20) from housing
assembly (14) .

11. Remove retaining ring (21) from shaft (22) .
12. Install Tooling (G) and a suitable lifting device onto carrier assembly (23) . Remove carrier
assembly (23) from housing assembly (14) . The weight of carrier assembly (14) is

from carrier assembly (23) .

14. Use a hammer and a punch in order to push pin (27) into shaft (28) .
15. Remove shaft (28) , thrust discs (29) and planetary gears (30) from carrier assembly (23) .
Remove pin (27) from shaft (28) .

16. Remove bearings (31) from planetary gear (30) .
17. Repeat Steps 14, 15, and 16 in order to remove the remaining shaft assemblies.
19. Remove shaft (33) , thrust discs (34) and gear (35) from carrier assembly (23) . Remove
tube (36) from shaft (33) . Remove pin (32) from shaft (33) .

20. Remove bearings (37) from gear (35) .
21. Repeat Steps 18, 19, and 20 in order to remove the remaining three shaft assemblies from
the carrier assembly.
22. Remove bolts (39) and plates (40) from clutch housing (41) . Remove ring gear (42) from
clutch housing (41) .

23. Remove bolts (43) that secure clutch housing (41) to housing assembly (14) .
24. Use Tooling (B) in order to hold the piston into clutch housing (41) . Install Tooling (F) and
a suitable lifting device onto clutch housing (41) . Remove clutch housing (41) from
housing assembly (14) . The weight of clutch housing (41) is approximately 34 kg (75 lb).

25. Remove piston (44) from clutch housing (41) . Remove a seal ring (45) from piston (44) and
26. Remove springs (46) , friction discs (47) , and clutch plates (48) from housing assembly

27. Remove ring gear (49) from housing assembly (14) . Remove plate assembly (50) from
housing assembly (14) .

28. Remove retaining ring (51) from shaft (22) . Remove sun gear (52) and sun gear (53) from
shaft (22) .
29. Remove bolts (54) in order to remove carrier assembly (55) from housing assembly (14) .

30. Install Tooling (G) and a suitable lifting device onto carrier assembly (55) . Remove carrier
assembly (55) from housing assembly (14) . The weight of carrier assembly (55) is
approximately 23.5 kg (51.8 lb).

32. Remove shaft (57) , thrust discs (58) and gear (59) from carrier assembly (55) . Remove pin
(56) from shaft (57) .
33. Remove bearing (60) from gear (59) .
34. Follow Steps 31, 32, and 33 in order to remove the remaining three shaft assemblies from
the carrier assembly.
35. Remove springs (61) , spring assemblies (62) , friction discs (63) and clutch plates (64)
from housing assembly (65) . Remove reaction dowels (66) from housing assembly (65) .

41. Remove metal seal ring (75) and retaining ring (76) from shaft (22) . Remove shaft (22)
from housing assembly (14) .
42. Install Tooling (G) and a suitable lifting device onto housing assembly (65) . Remove
housing assembly (65) and balance piston (77) as one unit from housing assembly (14) .
43. Separate balance piston (77) from housing assembly (65) . Remove O-ring seal (78) from
housing assembly (65) .

44. Remove seal ring (79) from housing assembly (65) . Remove retaining ring (80) and bearing
(81) from housing assembly (65) .
45. Use a suitable lifting device in order to turn over the housing assembly. Position the housing
assembly onto suitable blocks, as shown. The weight of the housing assembly is
approximately 61 kg (135 lb). Remove seven bolts (82) and the washers that secure clutch
housing (83) to manifold (84) .
Note: Manifold (84) is a component of housing assembly (14) . Previous text refers to
manifold (84) and housing assembly (14) as identical components.

46. Use Tooling (B) to secure the clutch piston to clutch housing (83) . Install Tooling (F) and a
suitable lifting device onto clutch housing (83) . Remove clutch housing (83) from manifold
(84) . The weight of the clutch housing is approximately 14 kg (30 lb).
47. Remove clutch piston (85) from the clutch housing. Remove seal rings (86) from clutch
piston (85) .

48. Remove reaction dowels (87) , springs (88) , friction discs (89) , and clutch plates (90) from
manifold (84) . Remove the O-ring seals from the front of manifold (84) .
49. Remove bolts (91) that secure gear assembly (92) to manifold (84) . Remove gear assembly
(92) from manifold (84) .

50. Remove retaining ring (93) from bearing cage assembly (94) .
51. Install Tooling (H) into retainer plate (95) . Tighten Tooling (H) evenly until retainer plate
(95) is separated from bearing cage assembly (94) . Remove Tooling (H) . Remove retainer
plate (95) and bearing (96) from bearing cage assembly (94) .
52. Remove bolts (97) that secure bearing cage assembly (94) and the plates to manifold (84) .

53. Install Tooling (H) into bearing cage assembly (94) . Tighten Tooling (H) evenly until
bearing cage assembly (94) is separated from manifold (84) . Remove Tooling (H) .
Remove bearing cage assembly (94) from manifold (84) .
54. Remove metal seal rings (98) from bearing cage assembly (94) .

55. Remove sleeve bearing (99) from bearing cage assembly (94) .
56. Remove bolts (100) that secure the transmission assembly and the torque converter
assembly to the transmission case.
57. Install Tooling (F) and a suitable lifting device onto the transmission assembly. Remove the
transmission assembly and the torque converter assembly from the transmission case as one
unit. The weight of the unit is approximately 227 kg (500 lb).

58. Place Tooling (D) onto suitable blocks. Place the transmission assembly and torque
converter assembly on Tooling (D) and the suitable blocks, as shown.
59. Remove bolts (101) that secure carrier assembly (102) to clutch housing (103) .

60. Install Tooling (F) and a suitable lifting device onto carrier assembly (102) . Remove carrier
assembly (102) from the clutch housing. The weight of carrier assembly (102) is

a punch in order to push pin (106) into shaft (107) .

62. Remove shaft (107) , thrust discs (108) , and planetary gear (109) from carrier assembly
(102) . Remove bearing (110) from planetary gear (109) . Remove pin (106) from shaft
(107) .
63. Repeat Steps 61 and 62 for the two remaining shaft assemblies.
64. Remove spring assemblies (111) , reaction dowels (112) , friction discs (113) , and clutch
plates (114) from clutch housing (103) .
65. Remove the springs under clutch plate (114) .

66. Remove plate assembly (115) and plates (116) from clutch housing (103) . Remove ring
gear (117) from clutch housing (103) .
67. If necessary, remove the five rivets and the two thrust washers from the ring gear assembly.
68. Remove clutch piston (118) from clutch housing (103) . Remove seal ring (119) from clutch
piston (118) .

69. Remove retaining ring (120) from sun gear (121) . Remove sun gear (121) from shaft (122) .
70. Remove retaining ring (123) from housing assembly (124) . Refer to Illustration 66 in order
to view the housing assembly.
71. Install Tooling (F) ,and a suitable lifting device onto clutch housing (103) . Remove clutch
housing (103) and the carrier assembly from housing assembly (124) as a unit. The weight
of the unit is approximately 41 kg (90 lb).

72. Remove balance piston (125) from carrier assembly (126) . Remove two O-ring seals (127)
from carrier assembly (126) . Remove seal ring (128) from carrier assembly (126) .
73. Turn over the carrier assembly. For assembly purposes, mark a line across the separation
between bearing cage (129) and carrier assembly (126) . Remove bolts (130) and the locks
that secure bearing cage (129) to carrier assembly (126) .

74. Install Tooling (H) into bearing cage (129) . Tighten Tooling (H) evenly until bearing cage
(129) separates from carrier assembly (126) . Remove Tooling (H) . Remove bearing cage
(129) from carrier assembly (126) .
75. Remove O-ring seals (131) from bearing cage (129) .
