Valve Mechanism Cover Base - Remove and Install
SMCS - 1120-010
Removal Procedure
Start By:
A. Remove the valve mechanism cover. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Valve
Mechanism Cover - Remove and Install".
Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before the removal procedure, the exterior of the
component should be thoroughly cleaned. This will help to prevent dirt from entering the internal
mechanism.
NOTICE
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.
Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.

1. Disconnect harness assembly (4). Disconnect harness assemblies (2). Remove bolts (1).
Remove valve mechanism cover base (3) .
Installation Procedure
Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before the installation procedure, the exterior of the
component should be thoroughly cleaned. This will help to prevent dirt from entering the internal
mechanism.

1. Position valve mechanism cover base (3). Install bolts (1). Tighten bolts (1) in a numerical
sequence.
2. Connect harness assembly (4). Connect harness assemblies (2) .
End By: Install the valve mechanism cover. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Valve
Mechanism Cover - Remove and Install".

Start By:
A. Remove the valve mechanism cover base. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Valve
Mechanism Cover Base - Remove and Install".
B. Remove the muffler. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Muffler - Remove and Install".
C. Remove the unit injectors. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Unit Injector - Remove".
D. Remove the rocker shaft and pushrods. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Rocker Shaft
and Pushrod".

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during
performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair
of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers
before opening any compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids.
Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service
Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain
fluids on Caterpillar products.
Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
1. Drain the engine coolant from the cooling system. Refer to Operation and Maintenance
Manual, "Cooling System Coolant - Change".
2. Remove support (1) .

3. Disconnect tube assemblies (2) and (4). Remove clamp (3). Loosen clamps (6). Remove
boot (5) .
4. Remove clamp (7). Remove bolt (8) .
5. Loosen clamp (10). Disconnect hose (9). Remove bolts (11) .
6. Remove the belt from the fan drive. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Belt -
Inspect/Adjust/Replace".

7. Remove bolts (15). Slide pulley (14) toward the fan. Remove bolts (13). Remove bracket
(12) .
8. Disconnect harness assembly (16). Loosen clamp (17) and disconnect hose (19). Disconnect
tube assembly (18) .

9. Disconnect harness assemblies (20), (21), (22), and (24). Disconnect tube assembly (23) .
10. Disconnect tube assembly (26). Attach Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to cylinder
head (28). The weight of cylinder head (28) is approximately 175 kg (385 lb). Remove bolts
(25) and (27). Remove cylinder head (28) .

NOTICE
1. Install a new cylinder head gasket.

2. Attach Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to cylinder head (28). The weight of
cylinder head (28) is approximately 175 kg (385 lb). Position cylinder head (28) onto the
cylinder block.
3. Apply Tooling (B) to bolts (25). Apply Tooling (C) to new bolts (27). Install bolts (25) and
(27) according to the following procedure:
a. Tighten Bolt (1) through Bolt (14) in a numerical sequence to a torque of 300 ± 15
N·m (221 ± 11 lb ft).
b. Loosen Bolt (1) through Bolt (14) until the washers are loose under the bolt heads.
c. Tighten Bolt (1) through Bolt (14) in a numerical sequence to a torque of 130 ± 15
N·m (95 ± 11 lb ft).
d. Tighten Bolt (1) through Bolt (14) again in a numerical sequence to a torque of 130 ±
15 N·m (95 ± 11 lb ft).

e. Turn Bolt (1) through Bolt (14) in a numerical sequence for an additional 90° (1/4
turn).
f. Tighten Bolt (15) through Bolt (20) in a numerical sequence to a torque of 55 ± 7
N·m (41 ± 5 lb ft).
4. Connect tube assembly (26) .
5. Connect tube assembly (23). Connect harness assemblies (20), (21), (22), and (24) .
6. Connect tube assembly (18). Connect hose (19) and tighten clamp (17) to 11 ± 1 N·m (97 ±
0.9 lb in). Connect harness assembly (16) .

7. Position bracket (12). Install bolts (13). Position pulley (14) on the fan drive. Install bolts
(15) .
8. Install the fan drive belt. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Belt -
Inspect/Adjust/Replace".
9. Connect hose (9). Tighten clamp (10) to 11 ± 1 N·m (97 ± 0.9 lb in). Install bolts (11) .

10. Install clamp (7). Install bolt (8) .
11. Install boot (5). Tighten clamps (6) to 11 ± 1 N·m (97 ± 0.9 lb in). Connect tube assemblies
(2) and (4). Install clamp (3). Tighten clamp (3) to 7.5 ± 1 N·m (66 ± 0.9 lb in).
12. Install support (1) .
13. Fill the cooling system. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Cooling System
Coolant - Change".
End By:
a. Install the rocker shaft and pushrods. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Rocker Shaft
and Pushrod".
b. Install the unit injectors. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Unit Injector - Remove".
c. Install the muffler. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Muffler - Remove and Install".

d. Install the valve mechanism cover base. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Valve
Mechanism Cover Base - Remove and Install".

Water Temperature Regulator - Remove and Install - Engine

Removal Procedure

At operating temperature, the engine coolant is hot and under pressure.
Steam can cause personal injury.
Check the coolant level only after the engine has been stopped and the
fill cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.
Remove the fill cap slowly to relieve pressure.
Cooling system conditioner contains alkali. Avoid contact with the skin
and eyes to prevent personal injury.
1. Drain the engine coolant into a suitable container for storage or for disposal. Drain the
coolant to a level that is below the water temperature regulator. Refer to Operation and
Maintenance Manual, "Cooling System Coolant - Change" for the correct procedure.
2. Loosen clamp (2) and disconnect hose (1) from cover (3) .

3. Remove bolts (4) .
4. Remove cover (3) .
5. Remove water temperature regulator (5) and gasket (6) .

1. Install a new gasket (6). Install water temperature regulator (5) .
2. Position cover (3) .
3. Install bolt (4) .

4. Connect hose (1) to cover (3) .
5. Tighten clamp (2) .
6. Fill the cooling system to the correct level. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual,
"Cooling System Coolant - Change"and Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Capacities
(Refill)".

Start By:
A. Remove the hood. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Hood - Remove and Install".
Note: Put identification marks on all hoses, on all hose assemblies, on all wires, and on all tube
assemblies for installation purposes. Plug all hose assemblies and all tube assemblies. This helps
to prevent fluid loss, and this helps to keep contaminants from entering the system.
