The Alcaicería of Granada (Spain) From a silk trade center to a post-touristi...kauharquitectos
Slide presentation used for the communication 'The Alcaicería of Granada (Spain) From a silk trade center to a post-touristic shopping-scape', presented in Lisbon (May 2013) during the International Conference ShoppingScapes´13, Universidade Lusófona de Humanidades e Tecnologias. This communication shows some preliminary notes about the evolution of the Alcaicería of Granada, Spain, a case study of one of the precursors of themed modern shopping centers and malls.
Abstract: The Alcaicería of Granada is a contemporary post-touristic shopping-scape with deeps roots in history. In the Medieval Arab world, the term al-qaysāriyya described a commercial institution for the silk trade as well as an architectonic typology. In Al-Andalus, the typology was a cluster of shops located in the center of the main cities. After the Reconquest, these structures were maintained and alcaicerías were even built, as commercial spaces, in America and the Philippines. The decline of the silk trade provoked their disappearance, with the exception of Granada's. The chronicle of the Alcaicería of Granada begins with a "transaction document" (1460), continues with its reconstruction in Alhambresque style (1843) and its conversion into a theme market for handcrafts (1940), to its recent restoration (2002). Today, the mimetic atmosphere full of souvenirs, among just a few local crafts, is a commercial urban scenario that mixes reality and fiction for tourists.

Basques people are good eaters and demanding ones, and the
Basque version of tapas - pinchos or pintxos - tend to be more
elaborated than ordinary tapas.
In the early 20th Century small taverns appeared in the Basque
Country, places to share the country’s best ciders and wines
together with traditional foods in an informal and popular
atmosphere. Following the example of the cider-makers, bite-sized
toothpick foods known as pintxos were served to counter the
excesses caused by drinking.
65. In the first part of the visit, our chef will give an explication of the workshop,
a short introduction into this particular cuisine and you will go on to create
an elaborate pincho with its own tasting notes.
Afterwards we will divide the group into small working groups and each will
receive the materials and basic ingredients with which to create the
pinchos; 5 or 6 ingredients.
From this point on, each group will begin to create different pinchos using
the ingredients that have been given to them as well as the specific tasting
notes for each one.
To round off the workshop, there will be a blind tasting, that is to say that
one member of each group will try a portion of each pincho, make an
appreciation and give their verdict. For his part, the chef will go over each
one of the tasting notes written by the groups, in order to name the winning
team.
66. Do you dare to compete with
your collegues in a cocktail workshop-
competition for amateurs?

ingredients but, above all, shake the
cocktail, the best mixture will be the
winner.
Shake it, shake it and shake!
67. During the activity of two hours long, you will make two classic
cocktails under the supervision of a professional barman expert
in cocktails recipes.
First of all, an expert master will do a demonstration at the same
time as the members of the group will make their own cocktail.
Everything counts in this part: the time of elaboration of the
cocktail and the delicious refreshing taste of the Caipi-fruits and
the jackass mojito.
In the second part, members will be split in groups of

communication in every civilization and every continent
across the globe.
The one we use is the “Jembe” drum from

from an arts and craft company from Bamako,
Mali, which carries out environmental
reforestation as well as socio-cultural
programmes.
