Problem

Many of us have experienced the feeling of being in a lonely crowd: Walking through a
crowded city or being in between sessions at a conference and *knowing* that dozens of
the people you pass by might be likeminded and fun to hang out with, but there's no easy
way to meet just them (without cutting through dozens of awkward icebreakers, small talk
and then personal discovery to see if you align).

What if you could pass someone on the street and get an automated alert if they shared
your interests (and were looking for a meeting as well)?

Existing social software primarily facilitates communication and socialization between
*existing* friends. Aside from dating sites, which often have clunky and arduous steps
before the first meeting of strangers, there is no simple method of finding new like-minded
people in your immediate geographic surroundings.

Solution

Using smartphones' GPS data and Facebook bio data, we're going to extend everyone's
potential social graph to include strangers nearby that you *would* want to meet (if only
there was a way for that to happen).

Imagine if everyone you walked by with similar interests to you had a virtual bubble over
their head saying what you had in common. That's what catalike aims to do.
Adoption

Publicity

To get the first rollout of people using this, we'd launch it a crowded conference. We'd also
target some specific cities (San Francisco and NYC) at first before expanding beyond it.
Press would be intrigued by the extension of "talking to strangers" that they are already
fluttering over on Chat Roulette. This extension takes it into the realm of real life and would
get some solid coverage.

Traction

Alternative Users
We'd probably see a lot of users figuring out how to use it for alternative means (i.e.
anonymous hookups / affairs) right out of the gate. We'd need to figure out how to crack
down on this once the service gains more steam and it becomes a problem. During initial
traction push, this might help boost use of the service for positive ways (similar to
youtube's use of copyrighted videos or craigslist for prostitution).

Early Tech Adopters
We'd introduce some game theory elements to this, to encourage repetitive usage and good
natured meetings. We'd make it a game to meet as many people (qualitatively) as possible.
People would get points (and badges) towards this game only if both parties agreed the
meeting went well. We'd also have a method for people to report negative experiences to
others [I am not looking forward to the first time something seriously bad happens].

User profiles would be completely private until they were discovered through GPS / interest
proximity during the initial rollouts to help force people to actually use the app when looking
to discover people.

Second Tier Adopters
Word of mouth from the earliest adopters should help this scale beautifully. The gaming
component especially.

Mainstream
This has a good opportunity to go mainstream earlier than most services due to press
coverage demonstrating how the app works.
ROADMAP

--------------------
Attainable milestones
Synopsis: Catalike is a social discovery tool to help meet your future, undiscovered friends
in your neighborhood.

Catalike Life # 1
"roving islands" or "Ships in the Night"

Real Life 1-1 interactions

This is a super low cost proof of concept prototype that focuses on 1-1 engagement.
Essentially this would be an app that broadcasts your GPS data to a server and matches you
up with people in your immediate area that are also broadcasting their location AND have
matching interests. People would then decide to meet and check in with each other.

We'd build the first platform using Facebook Connect (as this would also let us prefill out
people's interests AND get a better handle on people not faking their identities). We'd create
one generic web app and native apps for the iphone, android and blackberry to start.

Seed round of funding ($10k) used to test traction.

Month 1

=============================

Life # 2
"Naval Fleets"
Real Life Multi-user interactions

We would extend functionality to facilitate group meetups. Imagine a group of Lost fans in
an apartment building each looking to watch Lost with other Lost fans. One of them could
broadcast "Calling all Lost fans, come to Apartment 10b" and any of them tuned into this
interest would get the group meetup request (instead of just a 1-1 invitation). We would
facilitate this kind of group meeting, creating temporary meet locations and using game
theory to reward large groups that show up at these temporary events. The larger the
group, the higher the reward.
User profiles would be available to people living in a location even when they were not
broadcasting, as there would be more browsable data.
Instead of being tied to GPS coordinates during broadcasts, you could also meet people
through offline connections.

Apps get an upgrade that would allow a person to use bluetooth "radar" to better find a
meat-up in a crowd.

Angel round of funding used to scale product and increase growth (200-300k)

Month 6

========================

Life # 3
"Island Destinations"
Geolocation-based Interactions

This introduces layers beyond just people and real life. You can now receive deals (of
interest to you) just by broadcasting. Interactions are tied to specific locations (or objects)
instead of relationships. We add permanent check in spots that are tied to interests. For
example, if you are a Chinese Food enthusiast, and walk by a place with great Chinese Food
reviews, you should get an alert.

Series A round of funding is used to hit Revenues stage ($3m)

Revenue model is added for self serve businesses, sitting on top of google local.
CEO is added to bring it to the next level and compete in real world.

Month 18

--------------------
Ambitious milestones
Synopsis: Catalike is a social discovery tool to help meet your future, undiscovered friends
in your neighborhood.

Life # 4
"Telescopes"
Online 1-1 interactions

Online layer is added so people can find like minds not in their immediate geographic
region. Heavy Search component. Profiles will only be visible to those with the same
Interests (differentiated from people in the same Network). Revenue model around
monetizing the search for similar people and faciliating those online communications (similar
to dating sites).

Month 24

Life # 5
"Ghost ships"
Online multi-user interactions

Online multi-user groups are now in place, aiding in multi-user topics of all kinds. Revenue
model around Ads.

Month 30

Life # 6
"Treasure Maps"
Online Topic-based interactions (public)

Online layer is added so people can discuss with many at once around centralized meta
topics. The topics are now the attractors and there's no limit to who can participate in the
conversation. Revenue model around chat.

Month 36

Profitable
Series B round ($9m)

----------------------
Shoot for the Moon scenarios
Synopsis: Catalike is a social discovery tool to help meet [and manage] your future,
undiscovered friends in your neighborhood.

Life # 7
"End Game"
Social Network

Catalike is now a full expansive social network destination with a unique focus on facilitating
new relationships, instead of curating existing ones. Features would include photos, video
and more.
Month 42

Series C Round ($30m)

Life # 8
"Have your milk and eat it too"

At this stage, Catalike would be a behemoth in size and encroach on other social networks
like Facebook + Myspace. We'd need to now expand the social graph to support past
friendships as well. Catalike now becomes a part of people's daily life. Our index of user
interests, travel and interactions is second to none. Let other sites build on top of our
platform, expanding the usefulness of our site.

Go Public
Month 54

Life # 9
"Social Sweater"

Allow users to interact with our social tools everywhere throughout the web, expanding the
usefulness of their sites (and our distribution).

Month 60
Branding
Name
Catalike.com - Portmanteau for "Catalyst and Alike". The idea is to be a way to make it
easier and quicker (catalyst) to find people like you. It also plays off another word for cat
that will probably be used in reference to how the service is sometimes used.

Logo
Logo is a riff on a venn diagram, showing two upside down chat bubbles overlapping and
forming a cat's face in the overlap. Cute and memorable. Colors are purple (#6600ff), blue
(#0099ff) and pink (#ff0099). Font face is :
