The village of Bhagna in Haryana, India is divided along caste lines. 70 Dalit families have been staging an indefinite protest demanding prosecution of upper caste members for discrimination. Recently, a Dalit family extended their home on community land, which the village panchayat claimed was encroachment. This reinforced divisions between Dalits and the dominant Jat caste. Dalits allege past discrimination as well, such as unequal land distribution. The deputy commissioner has called on both sides to resolve the issue acceptably, but tensions remain high.
