Hershey began a $112 million project called Enterprise 21 in 1996 to modernize its IT systems and implement an ERP system by 2000. It switched over to the new SAP system in July 1999 using a "big bang" approach. This caused major problems filling Halloween orders, resulting in $100 million in lost sales. Issues included inadequate testing, training, and the complexity of integrating the new systems. Hershey's stock price dropped 35% as a result of the failed implementation.
