The Story Begins…
• Wells Fargo service call to install 2 ATMs
at McMurdo Station, Antarctica
– A science & research complex founded in 1956
– Supports 1,200 people in summer & 200 in winter
– NCR provides the ATMs
• To pull it off took a global planning team:
– Phoenix, Denver, Point Mugu, Washington DC & Antarctica
– Even with a year of planning, we could get bumped
• What was unique about this service call?
– A typical call is 2 hours & cost $300
– This one took a year & cost $25,000
– Couldn’t call for “back-up”

…more Challenges!
• It is cold and windy there!
– Summer 140
& Winter -90
,can go to -700
– Wind blows 14 mph, can reach 198 mph
• Two NCR engineers had to be ready and:
– In excellent health & take many immunization shots
– Pass background & security checks
– Assume they could be stuck on “the ice” for months
• Landing a plane can be problematic
– Daylight is limited to a few weeks in October
– Aircraft skis can freeze to the ice in an hour
– Weight is limited due to wind and cold dry air
