1. Web Design Technical Requirements Case Study
Abstract:
The goal of this project was to design a
Reservation Template for Pacific Delights
Tour Products.
The PDT staff needed to create an interface
that would be similar to their native
reservation system and could be managed
with a third party content management
system. Working with the PDT staff we
developed wire frames in Visio to represent
the sites work flow as well as the desired
design of the sites architecture. This
rendering would then be used as a blueprint
to shop for a Content Managment System
that could help facilitate PDT's online and
backend needs.

Travel Industry
Project Goal Process:
The projects goal was to create a template The Research Process consisted of 3
that would enable PDT to shop at their phases:
leisure for a Contact management System
that would enable them to efficiently sell The first phase identified and prioritized
travel packages on the company web site the needs that the PDT Web Site would
and integrate and manage the backend sales need to sell travel online.
processes on their native reservation
system. This project was created to help The second phase involved mapping out
generate more online sales for PDT. It was a new navigation experience for PDT web
also an attempt to streamline the content site users. This was accomplished by
management, which took place in Singapore creating a wire frame of the sites
with the main office in New York City navigation and business rules.
The third phase involved defining the
needs and data definitions that the web
site would need to share data with PDT's
native reservation system. Phase 3 also
involved creating form prototypes as
examples of what information the client
3. Phase One: PDT Native Reservation System
The goal of phase one was to work with the PDT staff in
determining what functions of the Native Reservation
system would need to be applied to the new web site
redesign. This included Reservation and Client
information and how it could be obtained and ported from
the online to the backend management system. Also
determined was what type of packaging could be
managed online and how that inventory would be
distributed online without disrupting back end processes.
When working with PDT we were able to determine what
daily functions would be needed for the back end users to
effectivly manage the daily data flow.
PDT Web Site
Also discussed was document management and the
distribution of documents to clients through various
electronic distribution channels.
Once these issues were addressed the programers began
to note the data files that would need to be addressed by
the API.
4. Phase Two: PDT Wire Frame
The goal of Phase Two was to work with PDT in
creating a new navigation experience for the PDT web
site users. With the wire frames the goal was to create
an easy to navigate booking solution that was
wrapped around the company and product information
that the current site offrered.
User research showed that the average visitor did less
shopping for product and more pricing of specific
product. Also determined was the need for a space
where PDT could advertise overstocked product or
specials.
The Wire Frames represent data blueprints and
business rules that the PDT web site wuld need to
adhere to to connect to their back end reservation
system. It also proved to be an effective description of
the way that most Tour Operators dealt product in the
travel business. This would prove to be an important
feature when trying to find a Content Management
System to build the site according to the wire frames
specifications. The travel business is a unique busines
that relies on constant customer satisfaction, one that
involves a long sales process that involves more than
few cash and documents exchanges between client
and provider. Because of these issues the wire frame
was able to help facilitate the CMS company's idea of
the expectations the client had in building a proper
online companion to their native reservation sytem.
5. Phase Three: A PDT Database Specifications
The goal of Phase Two was to work with the
programmers of the Native Reservation
System in determining the codes that would
be used to extract and share the data
definitions between the two applications.
The specifications were compiled and a
document was created to accompany the wire
frames of the site to companies when PDT
issued a RFP.
Phase Three: B
Also included in Phase Three was the creation
of mock-ups for online forms that would be
used to take reservations and build personal
account files. These Mock-ups were done to
give both the client and the Content
Management System providers an idea of
what type of information the site would be
obtaining from their customers.
Conclusion: PDT was able to take the wire
frames and data definitions to shop for a
Content Management System, this enabled
them to narrow down an already crowded field
of potential vendors.
