The House of People in Bucharest, Romania is the largest building in the country and second largest in the world after the Pentagon. It was commissioned by dictator Nicolae Ceausescu in his later years of rule but was never completed before his death in the 1989 revolution. The building was constructed on the site of an entire historic neighborhood that was leveled, including churches and streets, to make way for its massive underground infrastructure and artificial hill. Now home to the Romanian parliament, the building remains a controversial symbol of Ceausescu's oppressive regime but is also considered a significant example of postmodern architecture.
