The Rolling Stones recorded their seminal album Exile on Main Street in the basement studio of Villa Nellcôte on the French Riviera in 1971. They chose to record there to escape high taxes in the UK. The villa provided inspiration for the band but the environment was chaotic with wild parties and drug use. Other famous musicians like Duran Duran also found the luxurious villas on the Riviera conducive to creative work, recording some of their best tracks at the grand Domaine du Val Martin estate. The natural beauty and cultural history of the French Riviera have long attracted wealthy elites and creative artists looking for inspiration or an escape.
