The DOLL Data Landscape ”Problem”
= Key Smart City Challenges (at a smaller scale)
• We need to perform 40+ integrations
• Every data source is somehow different
• An ”object” is rarely described by a single
sensor
• OR it can be better represented across sensor
by combining and correlating data
• Will camera-based sensors be able to produce
Smart Data compliant models this year?
• Will GDPR-compliant Re-identification be
realistic in the next 5 years?
• Will hardware vendors align with standards of
their own free will?
• Will we have dependable, agnostic, automated
device-to-standard-data-model transformers
tomorrow?
• Probably not!
• We have to work with what we have!

The Digital City Model – Integration Process
Integration Process
• Identify partner
• Data-sharing agreement
• Knowledge gathering
• Technical Integration
• Identify 3rd party data
• Model Mapping
• Expose in Application
Kunack AirPro2 – high-end environmental station
• Rich data – also composite dimensions (AQI, dew
point etc.)
• 87 total datapoints
• Mature, well documented API
• Rich operational data layer
• Cooperative partner - willingness
• Technical and strategic input

The Digital City Model – Integration Challenges
Key Challenges in Integrations
• Understanding Device Parameters – Environmental Domain Knowledge
• Seperating Device Operational and Measurement parameters
• Manual Data Mapping by Developers
• Availibility of Partner Tech Resources
• Quality of API/Device documentation
• Event-driven data generation
• Time and money

The Application Layer - Today
Building demonstrators and PoCs
• Where/Who is producing emissions?
• Environment = f(Production activity, Traffic)
• E.g. Vehicles, OSM map, Buildings, AirQualityObserved
• + Wind speed & Direction (Open Data)
• + Power consumption of local factories (private data)
• How should be use our road maintenence budget?
• Log road damage from CV scanning(type, severity,
location etc.)
• Build model from logs and correlate with 3rd party
data
• Modulation around freezing point, rain, traffic activity
(of type), road construction and age, time of last
intervention
• Build predictive model for next year’s budget based on
predicted road condition
• Validate with additional scanning
Vienna, 12-13 June, 2023 | #FIWARESummit www.fiware.or
g
The Application Layer – Municipalities of Tommorrow
Our experience today
• Cities don’t have a budget for data exploration
• Municipal systems are numerous (350+ in DK) and
often not interoperable
• Employees lack domain knowledge – domain experts
do not have ”boots on the ground” experience with the
city’s challenges
• Scaling from one region to another is very difficult due
to varying infrastructure, expertise, ”target
applications”and tech stacks
• Difficult to explain new concepts verbally/statically
• Hard to predict cost/efforts for smart city tech
deployment
Our hope for the future
• Standardised models negate the data cleaning and
preprocessing stages thereby reducing costs
significantly
• Automated middleware components that can
translate between formats, models, systems.
• Domain-specific knowledge not required to integrate.
• Ease-of-use in toolset allows employees to generate
insights based on their own practical knowledge.
• Well-documented compiance strategies freely
availible, good examples can be examined before
spending
• We can quickly assemble a PoC to demonstrate a
concept for decision-makers
• Metadata layer can be used to calculate ROI and
CapEx/OpEx in simulated environment
Vienna, 12-13 June, 2023 | #FIWARESummit www.fiware.or
g
FIWARE x DOLL – Future Perspective
• Expose FIWARE-compliant device owners as good
examples for fast, robust integrations
• Encourage hardware-providing partners to consider
FIWARE certification
• Work with data-transformer-developing partner to
partially automate integration
• Work with AI partner to use e.g. Knowledge Graphs to
contextualise new data from ”generic vision sensors”
• Use AI modules and components to leverage modern
computational methods without owning specific tech
resources e.g. regression, realtime analytics etc.
• Lowering the barrier to entry for Smart City AI
• Ensuring Quality, Robustness and Reuseability
• Empowering decision-makers
• Strengthening business offerings
• One step at a time
