Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

Ông ta chắp hai tay ra sau lưng, hiên ngang đi qua những tên đệ tử của mình. Ánh mắt sắc bén như
diều hâu lướt ngang qua mặt bọn họ.
- Đạo gia ta nói cho các ngươi biết, giúp người thành tiên chính là đạicông đức. Nếu đạo gia ta thành
tiên, thì đương nhiên sẽ không quên chỗ tốt của các ngươi. Nhưng, nếu ai dám phá hỏng chuyện tốt
của Đạo gia! Hừ hừ!!
Vừa dứt lời, ông ta đột nhiên dừng lại trước mặt Lý Hỏa Vượng. Đánh giá thần thái của tiểu tử trước
mắt này khác hẳn với những tên đồ đệ khác.
“Ngươi là một cáiảo ảnh mà thôi, ta sao phải sợ ngươi chứ? Ngươi chỉ là do ta tưởng tượng ra mà
thôi!”
Lý Hỏa Vượng nghĩ như vậy. Hai mắt hắn bình tĩnh nhìn vị sư phụ đầu rụng từng mảng tóc đang
đứng trước mắt.
Đan Dương Tử nâng lên cánh tay phải dính đầy bùn trong khe móng tay. Bầu không khí trong hang
động lập tức trở nên căng thẳng. Ánh mắt những người khác đều nhìn về phía vị sư huynh dám mạo
phạm sư phụ này, họ đang chờ xem sư phụ sẽ xử trí tên này như thế nào.
Nhưng không ai nghĩ đến vẻ mặt của Đan Dương Tử lại đột nhiên trở nên dịu dàng, nâng tay phải lên
vỗ nhẹ đầu Lý Hỏa Vượng. Ngay tức thì, bầu không khí căng thẳng đột nhiên biến mất chẳng còn gì.
- Tối hôm qua, những kẻ phản đồ kia rủ ngươi cùng nhau chạy trốn. Tại sao ngươi lại từ chối?
Nghe qua, những lời này tựa như đang hỏi Lý Hỏa Vượng. Nhưng trên thực tế lại đang khen ngợi hắn.
Lý Hỏa Vượng vừa định mở miệng, liền thấy Đan Dương Tử giơ tay phải lên ngăn lại.
- Đừng nói những lời nhảm nhí. Tuy rằng ngươi không kịp thời thông báo cho bổn đạo gia, nhưng so
với những nghiệt đồ có lòng dạ bất chính kia thì ngươi đã rất tốt rồi.
Ông buông tay xuống, rồi tiếp tục nói:
- Ta cảm thấy thiên phú của ngươi không tệ, ngươi không cần phải làm việc trong phòng vật liệu nữa.
Sau này, ngươi chính là đệ tử ký danh của bổn đạo gia.
Lý Hỏa Vượng giật mình, địa vị của mình tăng lên rồi? Bất quá hắn lập tức phản ứng lại, trong hang
động này thoáng cái chết nhiều người như vậy. Chắc chắn là bên cạnh gã này sẽ thiếu người trợ giúp.
- Đúng rồi, nếu ngươi đã trở thành đệ tử của bổn đạo gia. Vào bổn giáo, không có đạo hiệu thì không
được. Sau này, đạo hiệu của ngươi là Huyền Dương.
Lý Hỏa Vượng liếc mắt nhìn qua cái hố tròn ở góc, thảm trạng của vị Huyền Dương trước đó chợt lóe

Tuy rằng Lý Hỏa Vượng không để ý đãingộ này lắm. Nhưng trong phòng lúc này, ánh mắt những
người khác đều tỏa sáng, hâm mộ vô cùng. Nếu trở thành đệ tử ký danh của Đan Dương Tử thì không
cần phải chết.
Nhưng trong mắt Đan Dương Tử như vậy là chưa đủ, phải cho thêm một số ích lợi mới có thể câu
được những người khác.
- Huyền Dương, nếu như ngươi mới gia nhập vào bổn giáo, vậy thì bổn đạo gia cũng phải có ý tứ một
chút.
Nghe thấy ông ta đang gọi mình, Lý Hỏa Vượng vội vàng đi tới bên cạnh, nghe cách nói này, hình
như là muốn tặng đồ.
Đan Dương Tử cầm lấy hồ lô bên hông lên, đổ ra năm viên đan dược ngăm đen, và đặt chúng vào
trong lòng bàn tay Lý Hỏa Vượng.
- Cầm lấy, năm viên thần tiên đan dược này là do bổn đạo gia tự tay luyện chế. Ăn vào chẳng những
có thể giúp ngươi tăng thêm mười năm tuổi thọ, mà còn có thể làm cho ngươi tạm thời có được đại
lực thần thông bảo mệnh.
Lý Hỏa Vượng nhíu mày, cầm mấy viên đan dược này đưa tới trước mặt mình:
“Thứ này, không phải là dùng con người để luyện chế đấy chứ?”
Ngay lúc Lý Hỏa Vượng nghĩ như vậy, bỗng nhiên hắn nhìn thấy một viên thuốc trong tay nhút nhích.
Từ hình tròn biến thành hình bầu dục, dường như bên trong có thứ gì đó muốn chui ra ngoài.
Đến khi hắn nhìn lại lần nữa thì phát hiện viên đan dược kia không có bất kỳ biến hóa gì nữa.
“Mẹ nó chứ, ta có bị thần kinh không? Ta quan tâm đến những thứ này trong ảo giác để làm gì chứ.
Tất cả đều là giả, ta tuyệt đối không thể bị cuốn vào trong này lần nữa.”
Lý Hỏa Vượng lấy tay vỗ đầu ngao ngán.
