The revised EU Bathing Water Directive (rBWD) has tightened the bathing water standards within
the UK. One of the Wessex Water regions bathing areas, Burnham Jetty is predicted to be classed
as ‘poor’ water quality. Investigations have shown improvements to Wessex Water’s assets along
the River Parrott are required, along with increased catchment management.
The outputs of investigations is to implement a £39million programme of improvements to reduce
the impact that Combined Storm Overflows (CSO) and Sewage Treatment Works (STW) have on
the River Parrott by either reducing sewage discharges or providing enhanced treatment.
The multi-million pound project will take four years to complete and is divided into more than 10
individual schemes.
Work, which will include new ultra violet (UV) disinfection plant, new storage tanks and new or
refurbished existing pumping stations, will take place in Sedgemoor with construction started in
2016 and continuing through to 2020.
Upon the completion of the programme, bathing water quality at Burnham Jetty will be significantly
improved to meet the increase in standards.
About the Speaker: Paul Godfrey, Chartered Civil Engineer, Chartered Environmentalist, FICE,
Programme manager of Wessex Water, with extensive experience in programme managing multi-
disciplinary design and construction teams for Clean/Waste water networks projects.
Lucy George, Chartered Member of CIWEM, assistant project manager and implementation
engineer, supporting project managers through detailed design and construction of the six
Burnham CSO Improvement schemes.
