invades surrounding tissue and spreads to
other parts of the body. In the history of
Traditional Chines Medicine (TCM), tumors
were discussed more than 2,000 years ago.
A tumor has resistant and hardy
characteristics:
• In 瘤 (liu), the 留 inside means to stay put/
abide/dwell
• In 癌 (ai), the 嵒 inside means 岩, which is
rock

COMPREHENSIVE TREATMENT OF CANCER WITH A COMBINATION OF TCM AND WESTERN MEDICINE
• Surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy have been western medicine's primary and standard
treatment methods for cancer
• “Adopt the strengths of Traditional Chinese Medicine, to compensate for the shortcomings of
Western Medicine.” - TCM as a complementary treatment
TCM'S PERSPECTIVE ON CANCER DEVELOPMENT
TCM believes that cancer development is due to a weakened body that makes individuals
susceptible to different carcinogens, invasion of evil, and induced organ dysfunction. These
result in internal disharmony and an accumulation of pathological products which then
induce abnormal growth in certain places, eventually leading to cancer.
Phlegm, Stasis and Poison are the main pathological conditions for cancer
The pathological products:
• Phlegm: a pathological waste product caused by disturbance in the metabolism of body
fluid.
✴ The mass/lump can be soft or hard, but movable under the skin
• Stasis: a pathological product of blood stagnation; blood moves sluggishly in circulation
or congested in viscus, causing coagulation.
✴ The mass/lump is hard and not movable
✴ Cancer pain (caused by the tumor pressing on bones, nerves or other organs in the
body)
✴ Cancer fever
✴ Tendency to hemorrhage
✴ Poison" -- development of Phlegm and Stasis, accumulated into Poison. Toxemia or
Cachexia (wasting syndrome)

Surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy mainly target cancer cells which do a lot of harm
and damage to a body’s qi and blood. TCM mainly focuses on strengthening the
weakened immune system. This is done by using the tonifying qi and nourishing blood
treatment methods and medication, incorporating approaches to counter the after-effects
caused by chemotherapy and radiotherapy, for symptoms such as:
• Nausea and vomiting, and the loss of appetite: by strengthening of the spleen and
stomach (digestive system) and regulating qi
• General physical weakness due to bone marrow suppression: by tonifying qi and
nourishing blood and strengthening of spleen and nourishing the kidneys
• Susceptibility to infections due to low immune function: Tonifying qi and nourishing yin and
moistening
• Blood stagnation in the later stage: by activating blood and resolving stasis
THE TREATMENT OF CANCER WITH TCM
A combination of:
• Supporting the normal qi (body’s resistance) and strengthening the root (Fuzheng
Guben): Patients with yin, yang, and blood deficiencies, correspondingly Replishing yin,
Warming yang, Tonifying qi and Nourishing blood, and
• Dispelling the evil and anti-cancer (Quxie Kangai): Clearing heat and removing toxins,
Resolving hard lumps, Activating blood and resolving stasis, Dispelling phlegm and
resolving dampness. Supporting the normal qi (body’s resistance) and strengthening the
root (Fuzheng Guben) the whole time. TCM believes that the fundamental cause of the
occurrence of a tumor is the deficiency in the normal qi (body’s resistance), a tumor is
the localized manifestation of a systemic disorder. Therefore, at each stage of the
treatment process, there is a need to tonify to improve immunity and body resistance to
overcome the pathogens.
HOW TCM IS INVOLVED IN THE PREVENTION AND TREATMENT OF CANCER
• Prevention is better than cure. TCM strongly believes in prevention of disease and the
early treatment for prevention of complications. To nip the tumor in the bud before the
cancer develops further.
• After cancer treatment or treatments, in the recovering stage - TCM treatment. Tonify
accordingly to symptoms differentiation, improving the quality of life, consolidating the
curative effect, and preventing tumor recurrence.
