In Bulgaria, Christmas is celebrated on December 25. Traditions include decorating Christmas trees with stars at the top, children leaving letters for Santa Claus and waiting for presents, and caroling from house to house where people give fruits and nuts. Special Christmas foods include meatless dishes, beans, rice, peppers, cabbage, corn, pumpkin, breads, pastries and plenty of boiled wheat, beans, cabbage, rice and dried fruits. Children enjoy playing in the snow by coasting, ice skating, building snowmen, and believing Santa Claus will bring their wished for gifts using his reindeer to pull his sleigh.

The 14-meter tall statue of the Virgin Mary located on Youth Hill is considered the patroness of Haskovo city. The Alexander tomb discovered near Aleksandrovo dating back to the 4th century BC belonged to a Thracian king and contained unique wall murals. The Uzundjovska church amazingly combines elements of Christianity and Islam, originally built as a church then converted to a mosque before being reconstructed as a church.
