The Master Gardener Program

The Master Gardener Program was
started in 1972 in Washington State.
The Monroe County chapter is run
through Cornell University Department
of Horticulture.
Today the program is completely
volunteer based.
Each Master Gardener strives to
enable residence to improve their
communities through experience and
hard work.
The Master Gardener program puts
on many events throughout the year
to cultivate, landscape and preserve

The Master Gardeners have the
advantage of extensive horticultural
training and possibilities for future
learning.
Volunteers have the opportunity
to serve their community with their
knowledge and hard work.

The Application Process
Applications will be sent out
September 2013
Interviews will be scheduled on a one
on one basis through out October
and November
Training will begin January 2013
Who are
The Master Gardeners?
Volunteering men and woman of
the upstate New York community
Monroe County that take an interest
in gardening, landscaping and the
environment at large.
Master Gardeners are willing to learn
and share their knowledge and
experience with others.
What do they do?
Some volunteers staff the garden
helpline, answering questions and
solving problems.
Maintain gardens at the Extension
headquarters.
Participate in annual programs such
as the plant sale at the Lilac Festival
and the Gathering of Gardeners
Symposium.
Community improvement projects.
Speak to local groups and schools.
Commitment
70 hours of classroom training over 3
months.
Commitment to 50 hours of service in
the first year at a variety of outreach
projects.
30 hours of activities each of the
following years.
