Introduction to Elite Image Products

Solving common laser printing problems
Sometimes, simple machine maintenance tips can help
correct a print problem that may be interpreted as cartridge
error. To save you time, here are a few of the most common
printer problems and their solutions.

How to:
…extend your cartridge print life
When “LOW TONER” message is displayed, remove the cartridge from the printer and gently rock it from side
to side several times to redistribute the toner. Reinstall the cartridge to continue printing.
Note: Never turn the cartridge upside down.

…make print density adjustments
You can select the lightness or darkness of a print by using the print density adjustment. Light print density
setting will yield a greater number of printed pages. High print density settings will yield a lower number of
printed pages. To select the print density, see the printer’s manual.

…ensure quality prints
Each time you install a new toner cartridge, you should use the printer-generated cleaning paper to clean the
internal parts of the printer. Follow the steps below to generate and use a page of cleaning paper.

1. Press the Menu key until ”PRINT QUALITY MENU” appears.
2. Press the Item key until “CREATE CLEANING PAGE” appears.
3. Press the Select key to create the cleaning page.
4. Follow the instructions on the cleaning page to complete the cleaning process.

Note: In order for the cleaning page to work properly, print on copier grade paper (not bond or rough paper.)
*All printers will vary. Please see your manual for further instructions.

Solving common ink jet printing problems
Some ink jet users may experience minor problems when inserting
a new cartridge. These issues can often be solved with ease.

How to:
…get cartridge recognition
1. Always refer to your printer’s User Guide to perform the cartridge cleaning procedure (usually located in
the printer driver.) Cartridges have the tendency for ink to dry on the nozzles and the cleaning procedure is
recommended by printer manufacturers.
2. Remove all cartridges and confirm that the correct cartridge has been inserted. Never force a cartridge into
your printer if it does not fit. Reinsert cartridges in the correct locations and reset printer (above.)
3. Remove and inspect all cartridges for damage to the electrical contacts. If necessary, gently clean the
electrical contacts with a clean coffee filter or dry cloth to enhance communication with the printer. Reinsert
the cartridges and reset the printer (above.)
4. Unplug printer and wait 30 seconds before plugging it back in to reset printer. Printers sometimes need to
be reset once a new cartridge is inserted.

…increase Print Quality
Remove the cartridges and gently clean the nozzles by holding the cartridge (nozzle down) on a lint-free
cloth moistened with bottled or distilled water. As a last resort, use a moistened paper towel. Remove any
dried ink on the surface of the print head or nozzles. Reinsert the cartridges and reset the printer (above.)

Elite Image - Glossary

Compatible – As a machine or piece of electronic equipment, that is designed to perform the same tasks
as another.

GSA – Government Services Administration – Refers to the governing body overseeing the
procurement of all products and services sourced by the federal government.

Intellectual Property – Property that results from original creative thought, as patents, copyright
material, and trademarks.

Lignin – A chemical found in wood. When lignin breaks down, it releases acid that turns paper brown.
Lignin-free means the paper will not turn brown over time.

M.I.C.R (Magnetic Image Character Recognition) – Character Recognition Technology ensures
that characters can be reliably read into a system.

Remanufactured – Remanufacturing is often the most sustainable option. It is the process of returning
a used product back into the marketplace as the same “new” product of equal or greater value than the
original. Rather than breaking down the used materials, they are cleaned, inspected and remanufactured
to create refurbished products. Often remanufacturing consumes substantially less energy than creating
the same new product from scratch.

Smart chips – Small silicon-based circuit boards, found in a wide variety of products.

TAA Compliant – The Trade Agreement Act provides that the government may acquire only U.S. made
end products, or those from designated countries.

Toner – A dry ink powder that is attracted by a specific magnetic charge. Printed images produced from a
laser cartridge are made up of microscopic dots of toner.
