DULLES CORRIDOR METRORAIL PHASE II SIGNAGE
Washington, D.C.
Mimar Ponte Mellor was selected to provide signage services for the Capital Rail
Constructors. MPM will be developing all directional, identity, informational and
regulatory signs for six stations. Five stations are at grade stations along the Dulles
Parkway and one aerial station will connect with Dulles Airport.
The new line-Silver Line will take passengers from Virginia to DC and all the way to
Largo Town Center in Maryland, where they can connect to Amtrak at Union Station
and at New Carrollton Station. MPM performed wayfinding and sign design for
rehabilitation of the Orange/Blue line signage to include the third line-Silver.

Mimar Ponte Mellor has provided wayfinding and signage services to WMATA for
rehabilitation of signs on the Orange/Blue Line. WMATA has found that passengers
find the directional messages on the iconic pylon signs to be confusing. New
vault wall signs are being installed that include end destination names and
station ahead lists to aid in wayfinding. Other signs are being revised using current
Sign Design Guidelines. MPM has been involved in developing new methods for
implementing the addition of the Silver Line to the Orange/Blue lines.This contract
involves rehabilitating signage for 16 stations along the Orange/Blue DC’s Metro.

MTA MARYLAND BUS STOP SIGN DESIGN

The Baltimore MTA signs had remained unchanged for 40 years and were oriented more
for vehicular trafﬁc rather than for passengers. Mimar Ponte Mellor has developed high
image signs to be used downtown to catch attention.A versatile family of signs has
been developed for multiple situations. The new sign system is also utilizing a Bus Tracker
system which will enable passengers to call MTA and determine when the next bus will
arrive.

This 275,000 SF laboratory facilities is part of the CDC and USDA Laboratory
Response Networks that provide emergency response to national infectious
disease outbreaks, terrorist threats and agricultural safety efforts. Scope of
services included a wayﬁnding analysis of the site, developing entry and
directional signs for the site, coordinating with the architect the integration
of logo within the glass panel entry. Several custom color schemes were
developed. Because of the special needs of the laboratories, additional panels
were developed for information needed regarding climate control and entry
procedures for several of the laboratories.

College Park, MD
The 134,000 SF building was built with 35 labs for faculty-led research groups.Working
directly with Portnoy Levine Design Associates, a coordinated interior sign system was
developed to integrate with the interior finishes.The design criteria guidelines required
that an engravable material be utilized, so that the system can be maintained by the
university sign shop. Scope of services included a wayfinding analysis of the 4 story
building, developing directional signs to coordinate with adjacent campus buildings
and room identification signs.

WILKES BARRE/SCRANTON INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
Avoca, PA
Futura typeface gives Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport a clean yet
dynamic character that is befitting a terminal located on top of a mountain. We
developed complimentary sign types for the roadway, parking garage and terminal
using distinctive bands of warm gray. The colors we selected perfectly contrasted
with the overall airport design without detracting from the beauty of the space.
Passengers leaving this airport are treated to an airport they can be proud of; one
that is home to them and reflects their values for taste, simplicity, class and function.

The Continental Airlines Terminal at Newark’s Liberty Airport is extremely crowded
and facing and increasingly Spanish speaking clientele that must be served to
ensure the efficiency of their staff and reduce confusion. Ms. Dougherty not only
produced signs with extremely high contrast so they could be easily identified both
day and night but also used a color coding scheme based on an international
system to comfort the passengers. Yellow is for departing passengers, green for
arriving passengers, and black for services. All terminal maps were developed with
the same guidelines and instructions. The result a smooth international passengers
experience for all and a relieved staff that could simply point to the signs or maps
for questions.

Due to a space that is as International and important to the region as they come
our collaboration with the Architects had to be very specific and detail oriented.
We were all working outside our culture and had to re-orient ourselves accordingly.
For example in Arabic one reads from right to left rather than in English where the
language is left to right. A parallelogram design was developed whose shape used
floor and ceiling patterns, stacked methods were used to respect all the symbols of
Arabic and English. A second symbol was used to indicate if a prayer room was for
men or women with primary messages in yellow and secondary in white.
Our services included concept design, research of Arabic, messages schedule
preparation, and design of decorative glass panels in the mosque.

The Triangle Transit Authority had been working for 10 years to build a light rail
system to connect the three cities that encompass the Research Triangle. We
developed a sign system that could be produced using simple materials, however
the vibrant graphic shapes and colors would connect the 12 stops and 5 different
platform configurations.
The group of overhead directional signs show some of the preliminary concepts.

Design intent for the Durham Bus Terminal was to develop signage that would be similar
to those at the TTA Light Rail, which was planned to have a station across the street from
the Bus Terminal.Additionally, the client wanted to make use of the history of the Lucky
Stripe cigarettes that had been manufactured in Durham.We developed the large
circular band around a circular symbol to pay homage to the historic graphic.
The station served local city buses, regional buses and Greyhound buses. Directional
signs help lead drivers to parking and drop off locations, as well as to direct pedestrians
to their destination.
