Everyday Church: transforming the ordinary (Stainbeck)Lawrence Moore
Stainbeck United Reformed Church, Leeds, was built in 1931 and is set in the middle of estates which are diverse both culturally and socially. These estates include socially deprived areas which are ‘hard to reach’ and the churches had little impact on them. During the late 1990”s the church had lost its mission edge and numbers were declining. Confidence was low and the building had become a target for local youth to vandalise. The elders recognised that the church had to change if it was to regain its relevance to the local community.

2. WE WASTE.
THEY SUFFER
Many villagers in India use kerosene lamps and candles as a light source after sunset. It is not
because they love candle light dinners, it is because of the sever power crisis. According to a
census, 77 million households in India still use kerosene for lighting. The problem is even
acute in rural India where up to 44 percent of households lack access to electricity.
While the government has undertaken various programs and initiatives to address power
crisis, they have been faced with many challenges. While growing demand is part of the prob-
lem, wastage is also a major issue to address with. Around 27,000 mw of electricity is being
wasted every day in India, most of the wastage happens in urban areas.
People should realize that electricity is a national asset and should be conserved and used
with care. At Pragnya Bridge County, we have taken an initiative of creating awareness on
wastage of electricity. We have done an extensive social media campaign and a short film to
create awareness among the urban people to save power.
In our daily life, we waste huge quantity of electricity. Wastage caused by appliances switched
on and plugged in. This means leaving the lights on or leaving the TVs and computers on or
plugged into the mains when we’re not in the house. Any outlet, plugged into the main socket
will consumes electricity. So it is the best interest of the household to switch off those extra
lights and electrical appliances when not in use.
The little we save will give a big hope to the farmers who work in sun and rain. It gives a light
to their children to complete their homework comfortably. Our savings, will give the villager’s
their basic need. Let’s all pledge to save power and light up the smiles.
