Touch Foundation mission: training health care workers
Breathing for Life trifold
1. In conjunction with:
East African Medical Relief Foundation
and
Nejo Hospital, Nedjo, Ethiopia
serving 6 hospitals & ≈2.5 million people
in the W Oromia region
Nejo and the surrounding region have
a population of 500,000 The majority
are subsistence farmers with high
infant mortality rate and very poor
maternal health. The primary hospital
has only 6 doctors including 1
surgeon and 1 OB-GYN.
Nejo’s part of W Oromia region -
≈2.5 million people - serviced by 5
smaller ‘hospitals’ with fewer
resources. Most travel 6 to 8 hours by
foot for any kind of treatment. TB,
Malaria, water borne disease, upper
respiratory tract infection, Asthma,
Pneumonia, Goiter are common and
deadly.
The only source of O2 for all of them
is in Addis Ababa 10 to 12 hours
away. An O2 generator based in Nejo
will supply all 6 hospitals, and will
save many lives.

2. A reliable source of O2 is needed to
handle patients with respiratory ailments,
cardiovascular diseases, gynecology &
obstetrics issues and pediatric problems.
Over 8600 patients are regularly in need of
oxygen in those areas.
Lack of Oxygen supply in Nejo hospital
has been impacting children and pregnant
women. It is the most basic and pressing
maternal child health needs in the Rural
Oromia Region of Nejo, Ethiopia.
8 to10 pediatric & pregnant women
die each month due to lack of O2
The nearest source of supply is in Addis
Abab - a 12 hour ride and 320-400 miles
away from the hospitals in W. Orima. The
cost of the tanks and transportation make
an adequate supply difficult.
A local, reliable source oxygen can
dramatically increase the rate of survival
and recovery.
The Need
The goals of this project are to:
Purchase an Oxygen Generator to
provide a reliable source of O2 at an
affordable cost to the W Oromia region
Provide training for the local operation
and maintenance of the equipment;
Establish an appropriate business model
to ensure sustainability of the program.
Raise $161,000 USD over 2 years
toward purchasing the necessary
equipment and implement the training
and program.
The Goals
When purchased and installed, the
oxygen generator will serve 25-40
children and pregnant women at Nejo
hospital per day. It will also meet the
needs of other patients with acute
ailments and diseases throughout the
W Oromia region.
The hospital will be able to provide the
oxygen to five hospitals in W. Oromia
region at a reasonable cost.
This economic model will enable Nejo
Hospital to maintain and replace
equipment as needed to provide a
sustainable program that is locally
owned and controlled.
