4. WHEN TO DO BSE ?
Just after menstruation :- when the
breast is not tender or swollen this makes
examination easy
If you miss menstruation consicutively :- fix
a day in a month and do BSE on the same day every
month
Every girl after the age of 20
Once in every month in pregnancy
5. Cont....
Every women after menopause:- There
is a decrease in oestrogens and along with this if
there is any small lump is present then they may
turn into tumour . So fix a day in every month for
BSE
Family history :- If there is a family history of BRCA
then they should perform BSE every month in a
fixed day
9. STEP - 1
Looking in mirror :-
a. See for symmetry , size , shape
b. See for retracted / pulled nipples or any part of
breast
c. See for thickened / dimpled skin
d. See for any obvious lump

11. STEP - 2
Raising both arms :-
a. Keep one hand on back of shoulder .
b. See for symmetry
c. See for palpable lumps
d. This can be done while you are taking a shower ,
the soap and water helps in smooth gliding over
breast

13. STEP - 3
Hands on waist :-
a. Using one hand press firm on opposite breast
b. Helps to find retraction and dimpling
c. Squeeze nipples and see for discharge

15. STEP - 4
Lying down in lateral position :-
a. Lie down in flat bed in side lateral position
b. Lying in left lateral , stretch left hands and palpate
left breast with right palm to see for palpable
lumps
c. And vice versa
d. A firm ridge may be seen at the lower curve of
breast while lying down , that is normal
16. STEP - 5
Lying down in supine position :-
a. Lie down in supine position and keep a folded
towel below shoulder
b. Palpate around the breast and see for lumps

18. ABNORMALITIES FOUND
Hard lump or knot underarm
Thickening or fullness seen different from
surrounding breast
Skin :- Dimples , pucker , bulges
Recent change in nipple to become inverted
Redness , warmth , swelling and pain that is
localised
Pure orange colour in breast
Change in size and shape of breast
Pulled in nipples or any part of breast
19. ABNORMALITIES FOUND
Itching , scales , sore and rashes
Bloody nipple discharge
Painful lumby breast : - due to hormonal changes
leading to fibrocystic breast disease
Lump or tumor in milk ducts :- intraductal
papilloma
Obvious lump turned from dead necrotised
injured fat tissues
