RECOMMENDATION FOR CARLA KLEPPER
I have known Carla Klepper since I came to Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School on
March 1, 2011. I soon learned that she was a teacher who had a long record of
accomplishments during her tenure here. She served as head of the Integrity
Council for three years after which she became head advisor to the Student Council.
She was responsible for restructuring and revitalizing the work of these groups to
become meaningful organizations in the life of the Upper School. Carla also initiated
efforts to coordinate the event calendar for student clubs and organizations.
Her abiding interest in teaching English and journalism found a number of outlets.
She served as a founding member of the Poetry Contest Committee. She helped
judge the poems and then read them at the chapel where winners were announced.
A significant contribution to the Upper School program was the development of the
WHIS broadcast journalism class. She was tireless in writing proposals for all
aspects of the program; searched for external funding for equipment; worked
contacts with media to expose students to professional journalists; and brought in
experienced journalist to guest lecture. Carla was equally energetic in revitalizing
the student newspaper, eventually creating an online version that was updated daily
to augment the print version of the paper.
Students have particularly appreciated the high quality of the college
recommendations she wrote for them. Her recommendations became highly sought
after by seniors each year.
In many ways Carla has “done it all.” She has taught classes at every level of
difficultly. She has organized and chaperoned student trips. She has been a
presenter at professional conferences. Forseveral years she coordinated the
Governor’s Honors Program. Currently, she is director of the Government, Politics
and Media Institute for the school. The Institute will bring together educators and
professionals in the three fields to explore the connections that exist among them.
As director, she has been responsible for all aspects of the Institute, from planning
and securing speakers to producing informational materials and marketing the
program.
Many of the students who have graduated from Holy Innocents’ and have had Carla
for a teacher return to spend time sharing their latest accomplishments with her.
She has a ready smile that makes it easy to talk with her. Carla Klepper is an
experienced school person with many talents. She would be an asset for any school.
