Book Talk: Birth Rights and Wrongs: How Medicine and Technology are Remaking Reproduction and the Law
Millions of Americans rely on the likes of birth control, IVF, and genetic testing to make plans as intimate and far-reaching as any over a lifetime. This is no less than the medicine of miracles. It fills empty cradles, frees families from terrible disease, and empowers them to fashion their lives on their own terms. But accidents happen.
Pharmacists mix up pills. Lab techs misread tests. Obstetricians tell women their healthy fetuses would be stillborn. Political and economic forces conspire against regulation. And judges throw up their hands when professionals foist parenthood on people who didn't want it, or childlessness on those who did. Failed abortions, switched donors, and lost embryos may be first-world problems. But these aren't innocent lapses or harmless errors. They're wrongs in need of rights.
At this event, author Dov Fox and an expert panel discussed his book Birth Rights and Wrongs: How Medicine and Technology are Remaking Reproduction and the Law (Oxford University Press, 2019). Panelists explored the ways in which the book seeks to lift the curtain on reproductive negligence, give voice to the lives it upends, and vindicate the interests that advances in medicine and technology bring to full expression. They also examined the book's effort to force citizens and courts to rethink the reproductive controversies of our time, and to equip us to meet the new challenges -- from womb transplants to gene editing -- that lie just over the horizon.

Over the past decade, we have worked with many organizations public and private to change something fundamental about themselves. And we have learned a great deal about the difference between “change as an initiative that’s here today and gone tomorrow” and “change as an enduring force that transforms not only organizations, but the people within them.” From these learnings, we have developed a four-step Path to Sustainable Change that we use every day to help people who are serious about moving from a current state to a desired state. The four steps are (1) Declare Your Intentions, (2) Define What Good Looks Like, (3) Connect through Kinship, (4) Ignite Small Beginnings.
THE KINSHIP PROJECT INTENTIONS
Connecting through Kinship: We look to conduct primary research that aims to assess and quantify the influence of kinship and kinship groups on the achievement of sustainable change. Our corporate agenda aims to define the conditions and practices that can accelerate and sustain institutional change intentions. Our social agenda examines the correlation between kinship presence and the demonstrated advancement of social change as defined by indicators in selected areas of focus.
Igniting Social Movement: Kinship research is to be broadly shared to accelerate and sustain any intention for change. We believe that the conditions and practices that contribute to kinship can be leveraged far beyond the walls of any institution or defined group. We believe that kinship is a stimulant for social movement. When we learn to openly create meaningful and authentic relationships, we have the potential to significantly improve living conditions throughout the world pyramid.
Inspiring Global Kinship: We have a picture of success where kinship helps us move from segmented, regional interests to shared, global connections. Through an awareness of kinship as an accelerant to meaningful, sustainable change, we aspire to transform the way people live and work. And, as a result, inspire a million small unforeseen efforts and partnerships for social cures.

2. A 12-year-old boy has been killed by a brain-
eating parasite. Zachary Reyna, of Labelle, Fla.,
died at Miami Children's Hospital Saturday
afternoon. According to CNN on Aug. 25, 2013,
a ventilator was used so that his organs may be
donated.
3. “Doctors had given Zachary an experimental
drug to treat the rare amoeba, called Naegleria
fowleri, that he had.“
4. The brain-eating parasite infected the boy when
he was playing in a water filled ditch with his
friends. The Florida Department of Health sent
out a warning about swimming in ditches and
ponds during periods of high temperatures. This
story was originally covered on Aug. 16, "Brain-
eating warning: Deadly amoeba sickens young
boy in Florida.”
5. This is the second instance this summer of a
child being infected by a brain-eating parasite
under similar circumstances. Another 12-year-
old, Kali Harding, contracted the parasite in
Arkansas as reported here, "Parasitic meningitis:
New confirmed case in Arkansas." She is
recovering and is only the third person in the
United States to do so.
6. This brain-eating parasite is usually fatal. The
last confirmed case in the United States was
reported in 2010. Between 2001 and 2010, 32
people contracted it in the United States. This
disease cannot be spread from one person to
another.
