Brahmacharya refers to dedicated devotion and behavior focused on acquiring knowledge. It has different meanings according to the four phases of human life. In Brahmacharyashram, when one is a student, brahmacharya means abstaining from all distractions to focus on education. In Gruhasthashram, when one is married with a family, brahmacharya allows a physical relationship with one's spouse but abstaining from other relationships. Ayurveda defines brahmacharya as maintaining self-control appropriate to each life phase in order to prioritize knowledge, family, and health.
