Product Design Trends in 2024 | Teenage EngineeringsPixeldarts
The realm of product design is a constantly changing environment where technology and style intersect. Every year introduces fresh challenges and exciting trends that mold the future of this captivating art form. In this piece, we delve into the significant trends set to influence the look and functionality of product design in the year 2024.
How Race, Age and Gender Shape Attitudes Towards Mental HealthThinkNow
Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

5 Public speaking tips from TED - Visualized summarySpeakerHub
From their humble beginnings in 1984, TED has grown into the world’s most powerful amplifier for speakers and thought-leaders to share their ideas. They have over 2,400 filmed talks (not including the 30,000+ TEDx videos) freely available online, and have hosted over 17,500 events around the world.
With over one billion views in a year, it’s no wonder that so many speakers are looking to TED for ideas on how to share their message more effectively.
The article “5 Public-Speaking Tips TED Gives Its Speakers”, by Carmine Gallo for Forbes, gives speakers five practical ways to connect with their audience, and effectively share their ideas on stage.
Whether you are gearing up to get on a TED stage yourself, or just want to master the skills that so many of their speakers possess, these tips and quotes from Chris Anderson, the TED Talks Curator, will encourage you to make the most impactful impression on your audience.

l’ammissione.
The group "Ragni di Lecco" has been founded in 1946. A
brief glance to our history is contained within the dedicated
section of this book, or on the website www.ragnilecco.com
under the section history and expeditions. To join the group it's
necessary to overcome three steps: presentation made by three
members of the group, evaluation by a technical committee,
approval by the members' assembly. Within our group there are
climbers which practice different disciplines: classic alpinism,
modern alpinism, sport climbing and bouldering. Opening new
routes in the mountains, in Europe and worldwide, has always
been the distinctive mark of the group.

4. This book is a collection of pictures, which is the
result of our group activities since July 2011.
As you can immagine, not all the ascents can be
documented in an easy way, and sometimes it's
even quite hard to take out a camera and bring
back a single picture.
However, we try as much as we can to do a
professional shooting whenever it's possible,
which often implies coming back to the places
where we have already climbed with our
photographers and friends. In the last months,
we were lucky and motivated to end some
long projects, like the route Infinite Jest in
Wendenstocke, Switzerland
(Matteo Della Bordella and Fabio Palma started to
open it in 2009),
with Matteo redopointed it in an unforgettable day
(20 scary and hard pitches).
Then we filled our Book list with some new ideas
like the route “Via del Det” on Sasso Cavallo (an
old aid route, free climbed by Luca Passini and
Matteo Piccardi) and the new route “Velocità
limitata” opened ground up and redpointed by
Paolo Spreafico in Ratikon, Switzerland.
The usual “multipitch machine” Matteo Della
Bordella found also the time to repeat and
free climb several routes, like Cleopatra in
Wendenstocke (times ago freed by Beat
Kammerlander, but waiting for a new
free ascent because of a broken hold) Ritorni
notturni” and “SuperCyrill “in Tessin Matteo
Piccardi also did a great performance by free
climbing the “Camillotto Pellissier”
in Tre cime di Lavaredo. Noteworthy are the ”fast
and furious” trips of Della Bordella in the Peak
District (with the repetition of the
legendary route Gaia) his countless ascents of
hard trad routes, the sport climbing performances
of Simone Pedeferri (eight 8c and one 8c+ in
the last 12 months) and Luca Passini, which
inMarch 2012 has climbed his third 8c+. Dealing
with alpinism, of course we have put in this book
several pics of the second attempt of Matteo
Bernasconi and Matteo Della Bordella on the
West face of Torre Egger, Patagonia, along with
the full story written by Della Bordella (English),
and some impressions by Matteo Bernasconi
(Italian), a real thriller.
Enjoy! Furthermore in Patagonia, the ascents of
Daniele Bernasconi
(route Franco Argentina on Fitz Roy and Chiaro di
Luna on Aguja St. Exupery)
and the ones by Simone Pedeferri
(Red pillar on Mermoz and Chiaro di Luna),
that still attest the strong link between Patagonia
and Ragni di Lecco. As in the first edition, we
have included in this book some witness a sort of
lifestyle in climbing.
Climbing lifestyle photos, which have the aim of
describing the atmosphere surrounding us during
a year of climbing.

buon autocontrollo visto il run-out necessario.
Negli stessi giorni Matteo Piccardi sale in libera in
Lavaredo, con difficoltà fino all’8a+, dopo averla
salita una prima volta due giorni prima.
A Settembre ritroviamo Matteo Della Bordella
multipitch dell’arco alpino.
Sempre sullo splendido calcare Svizzero ci
Spreafico apre e libera insieme a Domenico
7b+/c.
L’inizio dell’Autunno regala alcune belle giornate e
Ragni Luca Passini e Matteo Piccardi.
in “preparazione” dell’imminente spedizione in
“Ritorni Notturni”, fino all 8a+,aperta e liberata
Mermoz e “Chiaro di luna” sull’Aguja Guillamet;
zona particolarmente liscia e strapiombante.
A inizio Marzo Fabio Palma, Luca Passini
Giovanna Pozzoli e Daniele Tavola trascorrono
“Sintomi strani” oltre a ripetere in libera in giornata
“De Rerum Natura”, impegnativa via di Larcher
ed Oviglia a Bavella. Simone Pedeferri, come
8. Dal diario di
Ratikon: Velocità limitata
Mercoledì 7 Settembre
Lunedì 12 Settembre
Paolo Spreafico
E’ passato un mese circa…una de-
cina di giorni fa un nuovo tentativo
di apertura è stato bloccato sul na-
scere dalla neve agostana che ha
imbiancato, rendendo inagibile tutta
la parete…
Così siamo tornati lo scorso week
end, sempre in tre: Dodo, Lorenz
ed Io. Il friend lasciato per la cala-
ta è ancora in loco! Finisco il foro
e scruto le pieghe della parete…la
roccia qui è superba, abrasiva per
le dita, lavorata al punto giusto …
nonostante ciò la mia progressione
è macchinosa, il pensiero di non tro-
vare niente su cui fermarsi per poter
chiodare ti inibisce e rende l’arram-
picata molto lenta…metro dopo me-
so verso destra, cerco per qualche
decina di secondi un possibile punto
per poter chiodare ma non ne trovo,
finché noto una tacchettina minu-
scola sulla quale con molta cautela
appoggio quel gancio pauroso che
il Dodo chiama Pika! Uuuhhhh….
destra riesco a raggiungere comple-
tamente disteso una banca su cui
appoggio il cliff e trattenendo ancora
una volta il respiro chiodo.
Eccoci ora sulla parte che dal bas-
so appariva come la più ostica: un
diedrino all’apparenza privo di appi-
gli e abbastanza scaglioso…4 metri
sopra di me sembra esserci un ban-
chettone che dovrebbe permettermi
di chiodare, alla sua sinistra una esi-
le fessurina lametta…in mezzo inve-
ce sembra tutto negativo…
Salgo con i piedi sopra la banca, i
primi appigli sono piccoli, ma aven-
do i piedi molto buoni riesco a tenerli
abbastanza bene…i dolori comin-
ciano quando devo alzarli, i piedi…e
cado… Poi trovo una lametta che
allungandomi molto mi permette di
arrivare ad una tacca gialla svasa…
cado ancora ...una, due, tre volte…
e ancora…sinché riesco a trovare
Mega jump!!!
Provo ancora qualche volta, ma non
riesco ad arrivare più alla svasa…
Decido per una pausa….ho perso
la cognizione del tempo…penso di
essere appeso da circa 4 ore, forse
più… In sosta ci sto mezz’oretta…
mangio, bevo e mi chiedo se mai
riuscirò a mettere quel maledetto
spit…non so… Ma risalgo…e dopo
altri 3 o 4 fallimenti riesco a tenere il
banchettone…il problema è che non
so come chiodare…si prospetta una
bella planata…
l’ho vicino smette, poi ricomincia e
si attorciglia con la punta attorno ai
pantaloni…non so cosa pensare…
si direbbe una scena tipicamente
fantozziana …proprio ora…alla fine
risolvo il problema, chiodo e caccio
un urlo liberatorio…fiuuuu!!!
Ora sono però stanco, sia fisica-
mente che psicologicamente…
sento di avere dato tutto quello che
potevo per oggi, così do cambio a
voglio godermi questi attimi senza
lamente…
Ed eccoci ancora qui…davanti al
pc, nel giorno del mio complean-
no, sabato ho terminato la chioda-
tura della mia prima via nuova, in
Raetikon! Chi l’avrebbe mai detto
qualche anno fa che anche io avrei
messo la mia firma in questo tempio
delle vie lunghe! Sabato, neanche
debole, stando quindi leggermente
sulla sinistra…io tendenzialmente
opterei per la linea diretta...
Via con i jumar…risaliamo i primi tre
tiri e quasi tutto il quarto, cambio as-
Dodo mi raggiunge e parte a chio-
dare sulla sinistra…io sono un po’
dubbioso, la roccia da sotto sembra
rotta e non buona, invece si rivela
ottima e quello che sembra un tiro
facile di collegamento si rivelerà te-
mibile, con poche prese e chiodato
anche lunghetto, assolutamente da
non sottovalutare. Questi 20 metri
lizzabili (almeno da me). Stando però
sul filo dello spigolo strapiombante si
intuisce una linea molto estetica che
attraversa alcuni tettini e dovrebbe
arrivare direttamente in vetta…
Parto con le solite poche certez-
ze…pochi metri e metto subito uno
spit…poi mi alzo, coi piedi sopra…
lancio..una volta, poi ancora e arrivo
ad una costola verticale che cerco
di attrezzare con un friend che non
ne vuole assolutamente sapere…
la fessurina è svasata …nessuna
speranza … casco una volta, due,
tre…poi decido per mettere lo spit
più basso…mi scoccia un po’…era
un bell’obbligato…ma da chiodare
veramente difficile…
bra facile quest’ultimo pezzo…urlo
E’ finita …sopra di me i classici
sentirsi sollevati…pensare a Qualco-
mi fa stare teso…riuscirò a scalare
questa via dall’inizio alla fine senza
mai appendermi…sarà facile o sarà
una strada ancora lunga?
Dopo
una spazzolata alle prese della parte
bassa ero ansioso di riprovare il pas-
so duro e la parte finale in strapiombo
con movimenti ampi su buone prese
e abbastanza fisici per poi arrivare
ad un riposo praticamente totale per
congiungersi dopo un traverso un po’
sprotetto ma non molto difficile alla
sosta di Miss Partnun.
Tolgo la corda e parto
per un tentativo…passo la sezione
chiave, faccio due movimenti e mi
trovo in difficoltà nella rinviata suc-
cessiva, la ghisa mi invade e cado…
proprio all’ultimo movimento.
i primi tre sulle Jumar e riesco a salirlo
al primo colpo…fatto…finalmente…
Mi sento appagato…contento, voglio
passare ancora qualche ora in questo
bellissimo posto in assoluta tranquilli-
tà così, anche se sono appena le 12
decidiamo di scendere e di andare a
camminare fino a Carschina hutte…
nella zona verso il Raetikon classico…
giornata stupenda…
Ancora qui il giorno dopo con le
gambe stanche, la pelle delle dita
dolorante ma l’umore bello alto! Ieri
giornata piena…Innanzitutto: la libera
è completa, anche gli ultimi due tiri
sono stati scalati dal basso con diffi-
coltà attorno al 7a, e 7b+. Contento!
Ma la giornata è stata lunga…molto
lunga!
E a che ora aprirà??)….80 km/h…po-
che parole e VELOCITA’ LIMITATA…
morale basso…molto basso… Co-
lazione a Landquart…sono le 7.30,
è già abbastanza tardi, avremmo già
dovuto essere in cammino…e invece
sono qui ad aspettare che venga ripa-
rata la ruota. Alle 8 finalmente ripar-
tiamo, ma dopo 10 minuti siamo co-
stretti ad un altro dietrofront! Abbiamo
dimenticato dal gommista la borsa
con le scarpeeeee!!! Silenzio. Pausa e
avanzamento veloce. Ore 9 finalmen-
all’attacco. Il resto fortunatamente va
liscio…risalita in Jumar…quinto tiro
bello palo che entra subito e ultimo
che dopo un’ispezione ed un’opera-
zione di pulizia si lascia salire abba-
stanza bene…7b+ sul filo del pilastro
aereo con una fessura atletica sotto,
un tettino da superare ed una parte
finale su roccia mega…TOP!!!
Il tutto a VELOCITA’ LIMITATA…
This summer Paolo Spreafico, together with his friends Domenico “Dodo” Sol-
darini and Lorenzo Martinelli, established and freed Velocità limitata (230m, 8a,
7b+ oblig) up the Sulzfluh (2817m) in Switzerland’s Rätikon.
The thought sprung to mind while repeating Miss Partnun (9-, Dominik Dürr,
Mario Luginbühl 12/01/2001) on the Gamstobelwand on Sulzfluh in the Rätikon
massif: the rock on that pillar on the upper section looked great and still virgin,
so why not add something new?
No sooner said than done for the Italians Paolo Spreafico, Domenico Soldarini
and Lorenzo Martinelli who in August forged the first three pitches of their Velo-
cità Limitata which “follow a series of slabs via balancy climbing and few holds,
typical for this area.” In September Spreafico and Soldarini returned to establish
the upper section which changed in climbing style: “the holds became more
generous but the face steeper, even overhanging at times, and the climbing
therefore became more pumpy and athletic.”
Grade: 8a (7b+ obligatory)
Length: 230m
The pitches: 6a, 6c, 7a+, 8a, 7a, 7b+

e motivazioni a scanso d’equivoci.
Ci accordiamo per provarla insieme, sai quante
volte dici “dai facciamo qualcosa insieme” e poi
per mille ragioni tutto rimane in sospeso? Questa
volta no, questa volta è diverso…
passaggio va prima trovata e poi rimessa a nuovo.
Sistemiamo le soste senza aggiungere spit, solo
chiodi e protezioni veloci, e così anche sui tiri.
L'emozione è immensa nello scoprire i movimenti,
scendiamo e aspettiamo condizioni migliori.
abbiamo mandato all’aria i piani lavorativi, ancora

imbracatura, casco, saccone, materiale, vestiti,
sull’acceleratore.
cazzutissimo diedro strapiombante quasi sempre
I tiri
sempre così buona come credevamo.
Siamo
Rispondiamo ridendo: “Bene, l’abbiamo fatta
oggi!”
bere! Matteo Piccardi - Luca Passini

VIA DEL DET
With Luca we
i m m e d i a t e l y
had a good feel-
ing, a good guy, I
always beware of
people ”not hold-
ing bubbles” (of the
drinks Ndr), and without
knowing, he brialliantly
passed my test. We talk
about our project and we
clearly discuss goals and mo-
tivations, in order to avoid any
misunderstanding. We agree to
try the route together, you know how
many times you say ”come on let’s do
something together” and then for a thou-
sands reasons all remains in stand by? Not
this time, this time is different... The following week
the ”Bubbles Team” is already at work, within a couple
of journeys, and the primary help of Alessandra (Mat-
teo’s wife) and Mariolone, ropes, cams, pegs and all
the necessary gear is stashed in the bivy at the base
of the wall. Actually it’s a though job, the heart goes
all the way down each time we scramble up, for two
full hours, Val Meria’s path until the base of our dream.
In this way we begin this hot autumn, looking for ”the
red line” of the holds among all the features of the Det
Route, on Sasso Cavallo, the dream of both of us is
to free climb this mythic line; a challenge, an adven-
ture, a tribute to the talent and to the abilities of a pure
alpinist. We adjust the belays without adding any bolt,
only pegs, cams and stoppers, we do the same also
on the pitches. Discovering the moves, guessing the
passages and creating a unique theory of holds and
moves from the beginning to the end is a huge emo-
tion. The biggest part of the work remains the search
and cleaning of the holds and the removal of some
loose rocks on a few pitches... Luca and I are really
psyched, we can’t think of anything else, each time
we improve our experience and we share our tasks,
this is an adventure in the adventure, is what gives the
spicy taste to our climb. Half of the route is ready, thus
we decide to make an attempt, which however turns
out to be unsuccessfull, due to the strong wind and
to the low temperatures, not really suitable for free
climbing, we abseil down, waiting for better condi-
tions. Wednesday 12nd October 2011 It’s 5 o’clock
in the morning, the moon is our natural headlamp,
we’re fully loaded, this time not with weights on our
backs but with ambitions... Around 8 a.m., Luca be-
gins the first pitch, long, diagonally to the left, with a
rock every time astonishing, today he’s really quick,
and resolute, we know that for this year this might be
our last chance and we push deep on the gas. We
link the second and the third pitch to save some time,
the fourth one is a desperate overhanging corner, al-
most always wet...today it is particularly dry!!! Come
on! I get over the first overhang and the pitch is in
the bag, Luca gets down the next one: crack, fastidi-
ous overhang, slippery slab, good effort by the ”Mata-
dor de Mandell”, we’re in the game... Pitches flow
smoothly until the first ledge, where we arrive at noon,
and as the good ”workers of the useless” we take our
lunch break. From now on, there are 5/6 pitches to
get out of the wall, but on unknown terrain, and with
still one which could hide some nice suprises. We re-
start with a nice transfer-pitch, on excellent rock and
excellent grass, IV+, and it all worths the +... Eventu-
ally here we are under the third and last overhang, the
rock looks super and the pegs are there...apparently
no problems... Our feeling are however rather differ-
ent from the reality, we realize that it won’t be easy
at all to solve this pitch, some pegs barely hold their
own weight and the rock is not always so good as
we thought. After some suspence and the fear of fail-
ing, we discover a small pocket full of grass, that once
cleaned allow us to reach a providential pitch-saving
crimp! Incredible, we’ve got all the holds for the hands
and for the feet and we can link all the moves!!! We
go back to the starting belay, linking this pitch in free
climbing won’t be that easy, we’re aware of that, it’s
15.30, we still have a couple of hours of light ahead
and we’re ready to commit all our energies for the
success. We get on aggressive and at the second
try we both succeed in free climbing the pitch! We’re
super psyched, it’s almost done... We climb the re-
maining four pitches with wings under feet, euphoric,
but always deeply focused, because where difficulties
decrease, mistakes increase, hence we need to raise
the alert level. It’s 7 p.m. when we summit on the top
grass field, exhausted but happy and conscious of
what this day will ”leave” to ourselves; we’re at the
top of Sasso Cavallo, 11 hours after our we lifted our
butts from the ground, an eternity! Now the wind is
sweeping on the summit, not even the time for a quick
rest, we sort our gear and start the descent with the
headlamps. The only thought is water! We’re parched
with thirst, it has been a long and really hot journey,
and we just brought 1,5 lt of water for the two of us...
lightness!!! We cross the entrance of the Dina (the bar
in Rongio) at 10.30 p.m., in the room people are talk-
ing loud, playing cards, drinking and discussing. We
sit down and order two beers, a guy comes here and
asks: ”How’s the route on Sasso Cavallo?” We give
each other a glance (was anybody supposed to know
about it?) Matteo Piccardi - Luca Passini (English

It’s two months I’m climbing little, too little, that’s due to a naughty elbow...my desire is higher than ever, I’m looking for

Infinite
Jest sarà forse l’ultima apertura in Wenden
per me.
na” hanno dei passaggi obbligati più difficili;
dare specialmente sui gradi 6 e 7 è quello
so 15 tiri? A volte sei al massimo delle tue
potenzialità, ma quali sono le tue potenzia-
lità in quel momento?
un termine, HLF, Hard Long Free.

arrivare in cima significa massima concentrazione
nulla. Ecco, per Wild, intendo questo. Un gradino
sopra HLF. Grazie a J. Sustr, R. Mathis, P. Abeg-
E grazie a David Foster
solo uno, l'altro rimane sempre giù, adduttore ri-
belle, o forse coscienzioso.
Rifiata. Riprova dopo cinque
2010. Inizio io, traverso a sx, poi torno a destra.
in sosta.
Poi
si alza, traversa, vedo i polpacci tremare, sempre
più in alto. E' altissimo, quasi ad una presa buona,
quando perde l'equilibrio. Mi arriva praticamente in
Ne
avrà per un mese. Quando torniamo, tocca a me.
Provo a sx, riesco a
traversare, Matteo mi incita molto, sto sui piedi per
un bel pò, azzardo almeno 5 volte, poi mi alzo, mi
alzo, e riesco a fermarmi.
bilimento tranquillo, poi avanzo ancora e ancora...e
Quante volte abbiamo dor-
Ieri,
nella libera, quel quinto spit ammiccava mooolto
lontano... Poi un quinto facile e splendido, un 6c
bruttino e obbligato, e l'altro tiro chiave. Lo iniziai
io, tipo oggi le comiche. Mi alzai dalla pancia della
sosta, piedi in alto, faccio per proseguire e mi resta
in mano una presa. Piombo a terra, seduto, da 4
metri. Non mi faccio niente!! L'esperto di Cadarese,
cioè lui, il conclamato miglior trad climber italiano (
conclamato? Non da tutti...) intravede una possi-
bilità di micronut. Beh, sarà lì per sempre, da quel
giorno. Ripetitori, sappiate che l'abbiamo lasciato!
Proseguii l'apertura, prima tentando a sx, poi a dx,
roccia orrenda, altro che Wenden. Poi, finalmente,
avevo 27 anni, Matteo doveva ancora nascere, e
Hai voglia a
certe situazioni.

It's called Infinite Jest. And tackles the
great Mahren rock face, right in the heart
of the "holy" Wendenstöcke. Established
by Matteo Della Bordella and Fabio Palma,
it is certainly a great climbing journey. By
no means easy, seeing that Matteo Della
Bordella concluded the first free ascent
in a day by stating "this time it proved
tough"... The idea for this new route
came to Palma and Della Bordella while
in the field. Or rather, something clicked,
perhaps subconsciously, during their first
ascent of Coelophysis, the route (650m
8a max, 7b obl.) which the two Ragni di
Lecco members traced just to the left of
Infinite Jest. It is unsurprising therefore that
"works" on Infinite Jest began in 2008, the
very same year that Matteo Della Bordella
redpointed the 4th pitch and freed all of
Coelophysis. In total "Infinite" required
14 days (6 spent freeing the line), spread
out over three years. Add to this a month
enforced rest as Della Bordella injured an
ankle during a fall, as well as 10 useless
trips due to either rain or "unclimbable"
conditions on the mountain. It has to
be said that Wenden has a reputation
for unstable weather. And that both
Coelophysis and Infinite Jest are some of
the longest, if not the longest even, routes
in Wenden - Coelophysis is 5 pitches
longer than "Infinite Jest".
Della Bordella sheds some light onto the
difficulties: "overall the route is slightly
more demanding that Coelophysis.
The obligatory grade is not particularly
high and routes like Non è un paese per
vecchi (430m, 7c+ max, 7b+/7c obl. Della
Bordella, Auguadri, Linescio) or www.
planetmountain.com/english/News/
shownews1.lasso?l=2&keyid=38332"Il
mito della caverna (Val Bavona, See Book
2011) have obligatory sections which
are harder. But Infinite Jest has many
7a/7b pitches which really mustn't be
underestimated, because of the technical
climbing and the run-out gear you can't
climb quickly and even if the route is only
17 pitches long, doing it in a day proved
tough. Some sections, it has to be said,
are also rather dangerous."
So the run-out style of the pro used on the
first ascent (and "also rather dangerous" in
the words of Della Bordella) seems to be
the focus of this new route. Fabio Palma
underlines this clearly: "Infinite Jest is far
and away the queen of the WHLF I've
climbed." Where WHLF is a variant of the
acronym HLF, Hard Long and Free, with
Wild thrown in at the start. In short, Infinite
Jest is a long and difficult route, which
might demand more than a single day
(note that there are good bivy options) and
which above all forces you climb free all
the way to the summit. A pretty impressive
"parcel" therefore which awaits repeats
and confirmation.
One thing is certain: a glance at the photos
confirms that the route and the rock are
very beautiful indeed. A final word of
warning: the line is named after the book
written by David Foster Wallace. Watch
out for those Infinite Jests along the way...

It's well known some trad climbing (see below for definition) ascents by Matteo Della Bordella, Simone Pedeferri and Matteo
Piccardi. Cadarese, a place in Ossola with an incredible amounts of cracks pitches, is now famous all over the world thanks to the
intense activity of Della Bordella, and in the Masino valley Pedeferri has climbed some cool lines since years ago. There are some
very extreme projects in their mind, for 2012, but they need time and mental control. Waiting for their (eventually...) pics, let's have
a look at some last year' shoot
Traditional climbing, or trad climbing, is a style of rock climbing in which a climber or group of climbers places all gear ( friends, nuts)
required to protect against falls, and removes it when a passage is complete. Characterising climbing as "traditional" distinguishes
it from sport climbing in which all protection and anchor points are permanently installed. In trad climbing, a leader ascends a
section of rock placing his or her own protective devices while climbing. Important features of trad climbing are a strong focus on
exploration, and a strict dedication to leaving nature unblemished by older means of protection such as damage to the rock caused
by use of pitons or bolts. Of course, due to the presence of cracks, granite is the more usabe rock for this style, but some limestone
pitches can be also climbed in this style, usually with the consequence of long roun-outs.
52. LLifestyleLifestyle...climbing is life, and living in climbing. Travelling, trying to find time to climb even in the worst
conditions or in a very bad period. Searching for any kind of compromise to climb even if work and private
obligations make time always less than necessary.
Climbing lifestyle means to adapt yourself to drive, walk and run for any possible, and available, piece of rock
and ice. It means, also, to climb together with your friends, in an amazing scenario or in a very poor place,
just to raise your hands to the next and closer hold.
It means to divide a narrow ledge for an unconfortable bivouac, or share own uses with the one's of our
climbing partner. Sometimes it also means to do a shooting to show other people what we have done,
explored, found, repeated, to let the climbing community to partecipate to pour adventures.
Always keeping sincerity in our messages, to avoid any false message or to create a unvalid vision of the
contents of our ascents

Die another dayby Matteo della Bordella
I t’s 8 o’clock in the evening and the sun is still
shining quite high on the Hielo Continental, the
temperature is unusually warm for the place
and the position where we are, no clouds, no
wind and blue sky, everything seems now to be
perfect, everything is going in the way we hoped
for months , I see Col Lux 20 meters above me
on the left, in front of me a semi-blind corner; I’m
totally psyched to climb this last pitch and quite
confident of reaching the summit of Torre Egger
the following day.
While belaying my mate “Berna” which is having
quite a hard time in cleaning the 5 meters
Horizontal roof I’ve just climbed, I can hear he’s
yelling against me cause he’s not able to pull out
his yellow C3, but who cares in the end, we’re
about to finish our route, we can also leave
there a cam; and in the meanwhile my mind is
already thinking to a perfect bivy at Col Lux, with
thousands of stars so bright above our heads,
and then I think to the next day, I think on how I
will feel at the summit of Torre Egger and finally I
think to the never ending descent that is waiting
for us. I’m still totally absorbed by these thoughts
when Berna suddenly joins me at the belay.
Probably the worst belay station of the whole
route: a blind corner quite narrow, with no room
for two people at the same time, just above a
big roof, with almost 1000 meters of empty
space under our feet. Berna tries to find the best
accommodation he can on the belay…
It’s not easy at all! We’ve also two big haul bags
in the way with all the ice gear, the belay is really
messy. It’s already late in the day, but the arête is
there, just about thirty meters and we’re out from
these hideous overhangs, we see the salvation
up there, at col Lux. Thus we take the decision to
go on and finish it up today.
I took quite a few time to build this belay, all the
rock is so hard and stiff here and since our hand-
drill is out of work, I did my best to place some
safe gear: in the end I put a medium knifeblade
high up, which singed well when I hammered it
in and looked solid, I also put a 0.75 cam, a gray
alien, a nut and finally lower down a 0.3 cam.
Berna gives me back all the gear I placed in the
previous pitch, everything is ready. The belay
looks rich and solid, therefore I take out the gray
alien, since I see a good spot for it just above
the peg.
I move on. I pull myself up to the highest point
of the belay, the knifeblade, and look for the gray
alien. I take the gray alien and try to come closer
to the peg to have a longer reach. I don’t even
have the time to realize what is going on, just
hear “ting” and realize I’m falling down, after a
fraction of second another “ting” and I suddenly
pass over Berna’s head and start screaming
loud. Then, just close to the border of the roof,
I stop. All the empty space is under me, all my
body starts shaking. I immediately fell a strong
sensation of cold. But apart the huge scare I’m
unharmed. I ask Berna how is he feeling and he
says that he is ok. After some time, I realize I have
to pull myself up again.
I’m hanging in the void and ask Berna for a jumar.
Berna looks for the jumar and in the meanwhile
he checks the condition of the belay. “We’re all on
just one cam” he says. All the belay had popped
out but the last 0.3 cam. Our two bodies and the
two haul bags are all hanging on a 2cm piece of
metal somehow hanged on the wall.
My world stops for some moments. If after falling
I was scared now I’m totally terrified and unable
to do anything. I say to Berna “ok, keep calm and
try to put something else in there”. I don’t think
he was very lucid in that situation, but still he
managed to put another #3 cam, working reverse
and put the nut back in, at least to try to distribute
the weight on some other points. I’m just unable
to help him, so I have complete trust on what he
is doing (in the end Berna since the beginning of
our route showed a great ability in making safe
belays). I can’t think of anything, but of putting my
feet on some piece of horizontal rock and stop to
hang in the void. Luckily we left a trail line going
from the border to the roof to the previous belay
and Berna lowers me down.
When he also comes down I’m starting to feel a
little better, but still I feel a deep cold and my body
is sometimes shaking.
65.
66. The night is cold and long, I wrap myself into
the bivy bag, and try to find some rest, sat on a
narrow and awkward ledge. Berna takes place 10
meters under me on another thin, leaning ledge.
For the whole night I can’t close my eyes, the
cold and the great quantity of adrenaline which
still flows in my body keep me awake. I spend the
time thinking on how to fix our hand-drill, but no
good solutions come to my mind. I struggle within
myself whether I should try to go up again, without
hand drill or not. After deep thoughts I come to the
final decision: I’m too frightened to try to go up
there again without a bolt. It’s so hard to accept
it for my ego, but I realize that what happened it’s
just too much for me, I don’t want to put myself
anymore in this game, I’m too afraid to lose!
Little by little when I convince my mind that I
wouldn’t go up there again tomorrow, also my
body starts to take some rest and I start thinking
back to the path that led us up here to this
situation. I remember all the emotion of magnitude
and steepness which I felt the first time I saw the
West face of Torre Egger, about one year ago.
It was the first experience for me in Patagonia and
I had been immediately stroke by this mountain
and by all the environment. Last year, after an
initial attempt on the wall, the infamous patagonic
weather came, and we spent 14 consecutive days
waiting in a cave in the snow, down the wall on the
Hielo Continental.
No internet and no music, not even the space
for standing up: just the two of us lying in a tent
for two weeks waiting for the good weather for
67. trying to tackle our challenge, open a new route
on the unclimbed West face of Torre Egger. In the
end, last year the window of good weather never
came, but nevertheless all the time waiting in the
snow cave didn’t switch off our motivation.
After all, many people say that Patagonia is a place
which either you love or hate and if Berna already
knew he was loving this place from previous
expeditions, this for me was a pleasant discovery.
Therefore, this year, we’re once again, there,
standing after two days of walk and ski on the
Hielo Continental, staring at what in our minds is
“our wall”.
Differently from last year, this year I know better
what I could expect and I’m definitely mentally
and physically more prepared to face this kind
of ascent, nevertheless, Berna is also psyched:
climbing an unclimbed wall like this is just all what
he dreamt for years.
On Christmas is our real first attempt. We climb
up to the point previously reached last year, but
damn, here we have the first nasty surprise: the
section of wall we’re supposed to climb next is
very exposed to ice falling from the summit ridge.
It’s 3 o’clock in the afternoon and the sun just
hit the face about a hour ago. Also during the
morning we noticed some ice blocks falling down
in other sections of the wall, but now this rain of
ice has intensified and it’s just above our heads.
Not all the ice blocks are big: their dimension
spans from ping pong ball, to a soccer ball, to a
fridge and in some rare cases they’re even bigger.
Since we consider the situation too dangerous we
decide to wait till the next day.
We bivy on an uncomfortable but quite sheltered
68.
69.
70. ledge, and early in the morning we start to go
on with our ascent. However the ice fall hasn’t
completely stopped, it has decreased since
the previous afternoon but still, I’m far from
considering this place safe.
We consensually take this risk and move on,
with some aid and free climbing following a wide
corner till it gets much and much steeper. At this
point, is my turn in leading, and I see 20 meters
left some terrain which looks much easier and I
system of cracks that could lead us very high up.
The problem is just to climb those 20 meters
of blank wall to get to the cracks… After some
inspections I climb 3 meters left and place my first
hand drill bolt of the route (Berna had previously
placed just another one). Still traversing left looks
hard. I try to swing again and again, but the angle
of the wall is just too bad to reach the easy terrain
with a swing. Meanwhile the sun is hitting the face
and the ice is falling more and more intensively.
Luckily the most dangerous part of the route
where all the ice is crashing is just behind us,
we’re on the line of the final overhang, nor totally
repaired, neither totally exposed.
Finally I find the solution for this traverse: the is
rope always tight, feet in friction on the small edges
and Berna giving me slack slowly and according
to my commands. An “assisted pendulum”, where
a good ability of the leader must be supported by
an accurate belayer.
When I equip the belay station time is running
out, we know the following day the weather will
probably turn bad, thus we decide to go down.
We’ve previously placed fixed ropes on the whole
route except the initial and annoying snow field.
After 9 boring days of waiting in the snow cave it
71. looked like the good weather was coming again,
with a short window of one or two days.
Enough to keep us psyched to go back on the
wall. We start from our tent at 11pm, not really a
usual time to wake up, but the plan is to climb up
the fixed ropes in the night and then exploit all the
daylight for going on with the route. But, before
the new day comes, we have to experience our
second nasty surprise: after 9 days of bad weather
and high temperatures, with plenty of rain on the
glacier, our approach is just unrecognizable, the
conditions of the glacier have completely changed
and the crevasses which were just half meter wide
have incredibly opened up and in some cases
have become around 5 meters wide and I don’t
know how deep…After a few minutes trying to
find our way through the crevasses we realize the
gravity of the situation: there’s no way to pass and
suddenly I fall with my full body in the snow…
My legs are moving into the void, luckily the 140lt
haul bag goes horizontal and keeps me from falling
down and Berna, which is keeping the rope tight
is now pulling to allow myself to come out. We go
in a safe spot and we sit down for a while, I’m just
discouraged and Berna is even more desperate
than me: we can’t see a way to overcome those
crevasses. And even though we would be able to
overcome them now, how could we come back?
The decision we take is though and bitter, now
the plan is: try to find a way to go up on the wall,
take all the gear and come back down. Among all
the equipment we’ve a double rack of cams and
a portaledge up there after the snow field and we
can’t come back in Italy without them. Little by
little and equipping fixed belays on our way we
manage in more than five hours to overcome this
72. labyrinth of ice and get to the base of the wall.
Last time we took one hour and a half from the
tent. Meanwhile the weather is getting worse,
windy and colder, the forecasted window of good
weather is already disappearing; but this, in the
end, isn’t too bad for us: at least we don’t burn
any good chance and the cold keeps the snow
stiff for all the way down.
It’s the day after, while chatting in the tent, that
I have a genial intuition: a stair. We could have
taken an aluminum stair on the glacier in order to
overcome the crevasses. Himalayan style, but a
sort of “preview” in Patagonia. Back in Chalten,
we purchase an aluminum stair, refresh our minds
and bodies for a few days and get ready to go
back and crush! The forecast is just incredibly
promising, with a long window of good weather
just coming, everybody is psyched for climbing
and we know that this is going to be our great
chance. Sunday, 15th of January, the first day of
good weather which is also Berna 30th birthday,
we tackle the 13 hours walk and ski approach.
The West Face of Torre Egger usually gets quite
dirty and covered with ice and snow after bad
weather, thus we’re glad the temperature is high
enough to clean the wall. The day after, we’re off
for going on with our ascent. The stair works well
on the glacier, however it is somehow scary to
cross with a tiny stair as a bridge the bottomless
crevasses. Unfortunately the face is still quite dirty
with ice and snow, especially at the top and we
get to the most exposed section of the wall at
midday, the temperature is very warm.
Ice blocks of various dimension keep on falling
on where we are supposed to go up, it’s like a
“Russian roulette”, we don’t want to take this
73. risk and decide to stop and wait for the night.
We set up a bivy spot with just the portaledge
tent and wait sit in there watching the beautiful
sunset. It’s just ridiculously warm for Patagonia,
too warm! And we notice big ice blocks collapsing
everywhere all around us. We realize we’ve been
wise in deciding to wait. The night comes fast and
at 3 a.m. we get ready to move on, sky is clear and
full of stars, but….half an hour later, just the time
to have breakfast and start packing the gear, big
clouds come in an instant and after a few minutes
it starts blowing a freezing wind and snowing.
Something totally unexpected. The forecast was
supposed to be good for at least 4 days. Ok, it’s
probably something temporary, we think, we put
our Gore-Tex on and start waiting. After a couple
of hours, at dawn, the light starts coming and the
weather seems to get worse. But we don’t want
to give up, we set up our “portalege camp, without
a portaledge” again, sit in there and wait. Towards
midday, it starts snowing quite heavily, but still,
we’re ok for the moment, the portaledge tent is
keeping us repaired from the snow and despite
the uncomfortable position we’re not cold.
The situation gets worse and worse in the evening
when the snow starts coming down heavily and
our sleeping bags and clothes start to get wet.
The next day we wake up and the wall is totally
covered with a blank white sheet, we’re totally
wet and we realized that in any case it would be
impossible or too dangerous for us to go on. In the
snow storm, we somehow pack all the gear and
start a rough retreat.
For the first hundred meters the ropes are totally
frozen and we’re having a hard time to clip our
ATCs in and go down, but then the situation gets
74. better since the snow becomes rain. At noon
we’re back to our tent, completely soaked, but
glad to be safe and in a dry place.
The day after I wake up quite early, thinking the
weather is still bad, but incredibly, it is just perfect:
clear sky and no wind. We’re happy anyway to
be here and not in the wall, everything up there
is white and I don’t want to imagine what kind of
blocks are going to fall down in a few hours.
Quickly we stash all our gear to dry on the rocks
and phone “Deza” our meteo-man. With our great
surprise,
Deza says “from now on, at least 4 days of good
weather!”. We honestly don’t trust his words very
much, since already a few times he forecasted
good weather and then we got a storm ;-) But,
well, anyway, we’re psyched to have the chance
for another go, despite we’re already a bit tired.
This time, we opt for the tactic “fast and light”: no
sleeping bag, no portaledge tent, no mattresses…
basically no bivy gear, just food to survive for 5
days. Some kind of feeling is telling us that this is
our chance, something is telling us that this time
we’re all in.
We start the approach, with our faithful stair, early
in the night, and thanks to the fact the we’re now
fit and know exactly how to move, we’re fast as
never before. Before midday, we’re at the higher
point already reached and Berna starts exploring
the new terrain. After a 8 meters traverse left he
gets to a black stripe of poor rock, full of loose
blocks.
Despite his moderate complaints he has no other
option than climbing up there, in the black rock,
with delicate and accurate moves, little by little he
gains terrain, being all the time very careful to pull
75. each loose block in the right direction. But only
after a few moments I would realized Berna’s
ability on that section; in fact, when the worst part
of the pitched seems to be behind him, suddenly
a pile of blocks as big as a motorbike falls down,
exactly in the place where Berna had just climbed
(luckily he’s now 10 meters higher up).
The belay where I’m standing is 8 meters right,
therefore I can just enjoy the show, while Berna,
all absorbed in his climbing, can’t properly realize
what’s going on.
But after a few seconds I realize that one rope has
been completely cut, and trying not to frighten
Berna, I shout him “You’d better just clip the
yellow rope from now on”. After a few meters
Berna makes a belay; by fortune we had another
half rope left from last year and we can keep on
climbing with two ropes…But it’s the first time in
my life that I see a rope cut while I’m climbing. I
thought these things just happen in the movies or
in the old heroic alpinism tales…
Looks like I’m more lucky than Berna with the rock,
since after the rope cut, I get to open probably the
two best pitches of the whole route; moreover the
wall starts to be a little overhanging now and we’re
repaired from the ice falling behind us.
I feel good and, open quite fast two straight and
long pitches of crack climbing: hand, thin hand,
fingers and a couple of short chimneys, there’s
basically everything, from vertical to overhang
terrain. Unfortunately I’m too heavy and tired to
open them onsight and I do a few restings per
pitch.
It’s already evening when I make an awkward but
sheltered belay station under a little roof.
76. Berna starts for the next pitch, he traverses left of the
roof, when suddenly a block of ice of the dimension of
a soccer ball, hits him on the shoulder. Ok, he didn’t
get hurt seriously, but we take this as a warning: the
next section is once again exposed and it is better to
climb it in the morning.
The bivy is cold this time with just light equipment, but
the morale is high: we’ve reached a high point on our
route and Col Lux, doesn’t look so far. However the
big question mark is still above us: a great overhang
or roof stands in our way, just 40 meters under Col
Lux.
The following day, we move out of the last belay I
did and traverse 20 meters left. In this position we
can clearly see what’s in front of us. After a careful
analysis, the situation doesn’t look good at all: the
weakest part of the overhang, the only line which
doesn’t look blank, looks very dangerous indeed,
since a huge snow patch, attached on the steep
wall, is pending just above the logical exit line, like a
Damocle’s word, pending now also above our heads.
Just to give and idea, the snow patch is maybe as
big as a bus.
The rest of the overhang seems blank. After a careful
analysis I foresee a tiny line just under the steepest
part of the overhang, where it is basically a horizontal
roof. Berna is not really convinced of that line, from
our position it looks so subtle and hard to see. But,
since we considered the logical exit, with the snow
patch above, too dangerous and consensually agree
we don’t want to stand down there any longer, our
other possibilities become either to go down or to try
that crazy roof.
We fight our way back on the traverse and after we
settle in the belay I slowly start to explore new terrain
on the right. I have a hard time on this pitch, with a
mix of cracks, slabs and blocks. Also making a good
belay is not easy, thus I climb the last 15 meters with
a few gear and some runouts to reach a good ledge
where Berna can come up as well.
Now we can see well the big roof standing 25 meters
above our heads, and I was right: there’s a little seam,
crossing it all the way!! I can’t wait for climbing up
there.
I get to the roof very quickly and start hanging on the
etriers. I place a good C3 at the beginning of the roof
and I manage to go forward quickly, the roof is easier
than expected to aid climb, I put some micro-nuts
and finally a bomber-proof red C3 and a medium size
nut just at the border. However, after the roof, the
seam, which allowed me to an impressive but safe
progression up to now, is dying into a blind corner.
Damn! I’m too psyched to stop my progression and I
start struggling my way up on very short knifeblades
and a couple of hammered micro-nuts. After maybe
7-8 meters on what for me is bad or doubtful gear I
reach a better position where I can put a 0.3 cam.
I can now see Col lux up there, 20 meters higher on
the left and since I’m running out of gear I make an
uncomfy hanging belay. With my mind I’m already
up there, up at col Lux for a superb bivy under the
77.
78. stars…in front of me a corner, partly with a crack
and partly blind, but the greatest difficulties seem
to be overcome, I’m totally sure I’ll climb it without
big problems. Berna comes up to the belay
and then…you can read how it ended up at the
beginning of my story!
Being here with this perfect weather has been all
what I dreamt for two years, it was just the kind of
experience I was looking for. So why Torre Egger
bounced us when we were so close?
From a point of view all this story is like a joke. It’s
like if in a marathon you are first, you see the finish
line and suddenly you fall and twist your ankle, but
all this adventure made me learn a lot.
I realized more than ever that somehow our lives
are just hanged to a line and in our case it has just
been the reality and not only a dictum.
I learned that climbing the mountains means also
to be able to renounce, and this specific renounce
it has surely been one of the hardest of my whole
life,
I discovered what my limits are, because after
the fall I didn’t want to go again up there again
without a bolt and this is just a personal limit.
Finally I shared all this adventure with Berna and
learned not to think just for myself but for both of
us, in all the climb we were just one single entity,
I couldn’t go anywhere without him and I couldn’t
do anything without me. And the thing which
makes me happier than everything else is that I’m
back alive and safe and I’m telling you our story,
because as many other alpinists claim, beyond
the mountains there are just men…

82. Ho vissuto una Patagonia molto
impegnativa quest’anno a causa
delle condizioni ambientali. Una
Patagonia caratterizzata, oltre
che da finestre di bel tempo nei
mesi di Dicembre e Gennaio, an-
che da tantissima pioggia e da
temperature molto alte che han-
no completamente sconvolto
ghiacciai, avvicinamenti, pareti.
Una Patagonia dove il bel tempo
non è mancato, anche se duran-
te la prima metà di febbraio ho
potuto rivivere la Patagonia che
conoscevo… insomma il brutto
tempo patagonico.
La definirei una Patagonia ati-
pica. Le temperature molto alte
abbinate alla pioggia che scen-
deva fino in alta quota hanno
procurato tanti problemi: avvici-
namenti in alcuni casi impratica-
bili, frane e ghiacciai pericolosi,
che hanno causato tanti inci-
denti, alcuni purtroppo mortali. Il
ghiacciaio di avvicinamento alla
parete, data la sua impraticabi-
lita’, ci ha obbligato a ritornare
a El-Chalten per recuperare una
scala di alluminio allungabile fino
a 8 metri. A causa delle pessi-
me condizioni del ghiacciaio solo
due volte siamo riusciti ad utiliz-
zare la scala; il ghiacciaio non
era più percorribile neanche con
questo mezzo.
Per tornare alla truna “alla base
del Filo Rosso”, l’ultima volta
abbiamo dovuto scalare uno
sperone roccioso di circa 200m
(una piccola via nuova per torna-
re indietro!), per raggiungere la
Via dei Ragni al Torre e tornare
cosi’ alla truna, un percorso mol-
to più lungo e laborioso ma più
sicuro. Spesso mi sono chiesto
come mai pochi alpinisti sono
stati interessati a provare a salire
la parete Ovest della Torre Egger.
Le voci che giravano sono di una
parete pericolosa, difficile da tro-
vare in condizioni, isolamento,
Cerro Torre-Fitz Roy.
La Ovest della Egger è la parete
più “impegnativa” che ho mai do-
vuto affrontare. Frane di ghiaccio
e sassi rendevano situazioni ap-
parentemente sicure momenti
pericolosi e difficilmente con-
trollabili. La parete Ovest cen-
trale ha una forma a “pera”, una
parete apparentemente liscia
dove si intravedono delle linee
d’arrampicata di duro artificiale
che obbliga ad una progressio-
ne molto lenta e laboriosa. Noi
colosa. (voglio ricordare che ab-
biamo ripreso un tentativo fatto
nel 1997 da Ermanno Salvaterra
con Cavallaro)
Da qui avremmo dovuto segui-
re la via degli italiani De-Donà –
Giongo o Huber-Schnarf.
La Ovest della Egger è una pare-
te a mio avviso molto difficile da
fare in stile alpino; è una parete
molto pericolosa per le continue
scariche di neve e ghiaccio che
cadono dal colle e dalla parte
centrale della via.
Dalla lunghezza 13 a L 19 la via
e’ quasi sempre soggetta a sca-
riche. La parete inoltre con il
brutto tempo si sporca sempre
di neve. Stare in parete in quelle
condizioni è estremamente pe-
ricoloso, se non mortale; per
poter salire in parete a seguito
di un periodo di malo tiempo ci
vuole sempre un giorno di bello
perché si pulisca dal grosso del-
la neve e perché si riducano così
i pericoli oggettivi. Noi abbiamo
imparato a conoscerla.
Purtroppo a un solo tiro di cor-
da dal Colle De donà-Giongo o
Colle Lux si interrompe il nostro
tentativo di aprire una via nuova
sull’inviolata parete ovest della
Torre Egger. 23 lunghezze di
corda, per un dislivello di 950m,
per una difficoltà max di 7a/A2.
Durante l’avvicinamento alla pa-
rete siamo finiti due volte in un
crepaccio. La caduta entrambe
le volte si è arrestata grazie al
saccone da big-wall che ci por-
tavamo sulle spalle. God thanks
haul bags!
Il 25 dicembre siamo stati co-
stretti a stare tutto il pomeriggio/
sera sotto un tetto di roccia per
ripararci dalle enormi scariche
che cadevano dalla parete, quel
giorno era molto sporca.
In parete puoi “muoverti” solo in
certi orari; ogni sezione di parete
veniva quindi affrontata in base
a questi criteri diciamo “tempo-
rali”.
Il 26 Dicembre, al mattino molto
presto, ancora un po’ assonna-
to, scalando ho ricevuto la sve-
glia da una caduta di 8 metri che
viene fermata da un buon friend
qualche metro sotto di me. E’
stato il battesimo del secondo
anno...
Quando arrampichi devi “convi-
vere” con il ghiaccio che cade
dalla parete e sulla via (ghiaccio
continuo grande al massimo
come palline da ping-pong).
Da L13 a L17 si può scalare
solo di notte o al mattino molto
presto (la via sale all’interno di
un grande toboga di roccia che
si intasa di neve e ghiaccio); al
pomeriggio la via e’ sotto le sca-
riche che cadono dal colle.
Da L19 a L21 la via e’ sicura.
83. L22 e L23 dipende dalle con-
dizioni che si possono trovare,
dalle macchie di neve che po-
trebbero cadere. E’ una parete
complessa e sicuramente molto
difficile da trovare in condizioni
ambientali e di meteo per essere
salita in stile alpino. Aprirla forse
L18.
L 19 è una lunghezza con roc-
cia di cattiva qualità, insomma
“marcia”, è un tiro pericoloso, in
apertura una parte del tiro che
avevo appena scalato è crollato
tranciandomi una corda.
L14 e L15 sono due tiri molto
difficili da trovare “asciutti” per
l‘arrampicata libera, ghiaccio e
neve intasano sempre le fessure.
L20 e L21 sono superbe cracks
in yosemite style.
Purtroppo solo 23 tiri di corda,
il nostro tentativo viene interrotto
non dal brutto tempo come è fa-
cile immaginare, ma dal manca-
to funzionamento del pianta spit.
quelli dell’anno 2010-2011.
dare avanti.
Il fantomatico “incidente” ci ha
messo a dura prova. Teo (Matteo
Della Bordella) parte per il tiro, il
chiodo a lama corto che aveva
precedentemente caricato al
nuovo carico esce, il friend 0,5
per il forte strappo esce, Teo si
trova 3m sotto di me, io spu-
to sangue dalla bocca,cadendo
colle.
Rimaniamo appesi in due nel
vuoto su un unico friend. Lo 0.3 è
diven-
tato il nostro idolo da allora!ma
Teo preferisce ancora il C3 ros-
so J Volevamo fare una sosta
sicura come tutte le altre che
avevamo fatto fino ad allora. Il
pianta spit si è inchiodato, non
riusciamo ad utilizzarlo, il busso-
lotto e’ completamente rovinato
e ossidato al dado, non riuscia-
mo a piantare spit; cerchiamo
diverse soluzioni ma non ci resta
altro che bivaccare e prendere la
decisione di scendere.
Posso dire di avere vissuto pro-
prio quello che cercavo, anche
se in alcuni momenti sapevamo
che stavamo spingendo sull’ac-
celeratore.
Esperienze che sono solo mie,
che mi hanno dato tanto come
alpinista e come persona. Non
è mia intenzione dipingermi né
come un eroe né come un’inco-
sciente.
Semplicemente ho raccontato
i fatti; per me solo tantissimi ri-
cordi ed esperienze che mi porto
nel cuore. Sono orgoglioso e
felicissimo di quello che abbia-
mo fatto io e Teo (Matteo Della
Bordella); poi ognuno potrà pen-
sarla come vuole, trarre le pro-
prie conclusioni, io so solo che
posso ringraziare la Torre Egger
per avermi regalato cosi tante
emozioni e sa benissimo che è
soltanto un arrivederci al prossi-
mo anno.
compagno d’avventura.
L’isolamento della Ovest della
Egger, i giorni interi vissuti al Cir-
colo de los Altares, sotto al Filo
Rosso, o in parete, nel bello e nel
brutto tempo, le ritirate dalla pa-
rete sotto la bufera o la pioggia,
i tramonti, l’alba sullo Hielo Con-
tinental, le stelle, la luna piena
che illumina a giorno le pareti, i
momenti di felicità nel salire sulla
Egger, e perché no anche le varie
discussioni che ci sono state fra
di noi, i bivacchi in parete, sono
troppi i momenti indimenticabili
che ho potuto vivere grazie alla
mia passione e con il mio amico.
L’alpinismo fortunatamente non
è fatto solo di numeri ma soprat-
tutto di esperienze e persone.
La Ovest della Egger la voglio, la
vogliamo salire, ma credo anche
che “la vita sia qualcosa di molto
prezioso, che non va trattata stu-
pidamente”.
La Patagonia ci ha regalato an-
che la cumbre della Aguja Inno-
minata per la Via Anglo-Ameri-
cana, salita il 18-12-2011, prima
del tentativo alla Egger.

84. SHSHtoria istoryStory fo Ragni di Lecco ( Ragni means Spiders) starts in 1946, when
four young boys found the inspiration to draw a logo that would
have become a legend. Their names were brothers Giulio and Nino
Bartesaghi, Emilio Ratti and Gigino Amati, who were convinced by
the name Ragni from an esclamation of the famous Italian climber
Tita Piaz, who said “this man climb as a spider” while looking at Gigi
Vitali, one of the first member of the group
In a few years the group become famous all over the world, because
the technical skill of some of the members increased rapidly also
because influenced by meeting some foreign legends like Herman
Buhl. In december 1956 Carlo Mauri left Italy for Mount Sarmiento, in
Tierra del Fuego, Argentina, and climbed the summit in march. This
is an historical step, soon followed by other international ascents,
whose more astonished was the one of Mount Mc Kinley, in 1961,
by a team led by Riccardo Cassin and composed by Gigi Alippi,
Annibale Zucchi, Luigino Airoldi, Jack Canali and Romano Perego.
This till then unclimbed summit of Alaska, 6194 mt, got even the
personal congratulations by J.F. Kennedy.
Another historical ascent happened in 1974, along Cerro Torre,
climbed by Casimiro Ferrari, Mario Conti, Pino Negri and Daniele
Chiappa. For the majority of the climbing community, this ascent is
the real first ascent of that magic tower.
Two years later Casimiro Ferrari read in the East of Fitz Roy another
step on in the history. In 1984 two young “crazy” guys, Carlo Aldè
and Paolo Vitali, finally reached the summit, after three years of
attempts, of the North East pillar of the giant wall of Cerro Murallon.
Ans Christmas 1986 saw Spiders opened a new route on Central
tower of Paine, again in Patagonia, the more challenging alpinist area
of the world.
In 90’s years a young team opened a new route on Ogre Thumb,
with difficulties up to 8a, and this is the first time we meet the name
fo Simone Pedeferri, destined to become a protagonist of the
following years. Free climb skill helped the group to stay in line with
the alpinism evolution, as attested by “Joy division”, the hardest
granite route of Europe, climbed by Pedeferri in 2004.
avvenne
