The Shadow Fold is a dark area filled with monsters that is destroying Ravka. Alina, an orphan, discovers she has unique powers and is brought to the magical elite Grisha. As Alina learns to use her abilities, she must face the Darkling, the powerful and seductive leader of the Grisha. Alina also struggles with her feelings for her childhood friend Mal as she is thrust into the world of the Ravkan royalty and magic.

The Shadow Fold, is an impenetrable darkness crawling with monsters that feast on
human flesh,this is slowly destroying the once-great nation of Ravka. Alina, a pale, lonely
orphan, discovers a unique power that thrusts her into the lavish world of the kingdom’s
magical elite—the Grisha. Could she be the key to unravelling the dark fabric of the
Shadow Fold and setting Ravka free?
The Darkling, a creature of seductive charm and terrifying power, is the leader of
the Grisha. If Alina is to fulfill her destiny, she must discover how to unlock her gift
and face up to her danger.
But what of Mal, Alina’s childhood best friend? As Alina contemplates her
dazzling new future, why can't she ever quite forget him?

seven behaviours/feelings that inspire further sin. They are as follows,
pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath, and sloth. Due to these
blasphemous impulsisses their faith weakens

Using fear to rule and keep in power, the darkling follows the
ideologies of capturing enemies in war and keeping them as slaves.

In Shadow and Bone, Leigh Bardugo conveys the theme of the immense struggles caused
by a toxic hierarchy with a thirst for power as its main foundation, and how such greed
reflects the fold by utilizing light versus dark motifs.
