Iulian Bold
Iulian Bold, a former pupil of Dollar Academy, is an outstanding young man. One of only six
Romanian students to be awarded a full scholarship by Headmasters’ and Headmistresses’
Conference to attend a UK boarding school, he joined us in August 2013 and distinguished
himself, both academically and socially. Charming, committed and very highly motivated, he
is described by more than one teacher as ‘a pleasure to teach’. In the 2013-2014 academic
session, he achieved outstanding results, seven ‘A’ passes at Higher, having studied five
subjects in the normal way within the timetable and added the other two, English and French,
in his own time. Last year he continued to be dedicated and ambitious, taking three
Advanced Highers, and still found time to be involved in voluntary work, the school Charities
Committee, and to take on the role of managing Director of a Young Enterprise team.
A linguist of an exceptionally high calibre, he exceled in Advanced Higher languages,
completing all written work to a very high standard and meeting every deadline. Both essays
and oral presentations demonstrated a clear and logical development of ideas and a wide
range of sophisticated lexis and structures. He responds quickly to feedback given and takes
responsibility for his own learning, seizing all opportunities to extend his knowledge of the
subject and readily exploring beyond the confines of the syllabus. He made good use of a
work experience placement at the European Parliament where he utilised all his language skills
with effortless charm. Similarly while undertaking voluntary work in Ecuador last session, he
developed his linguistic skills in a very different and more challenging environment, coping with
customary ease.
Properly ambitious and highly motivated, he was inspired by business subjects from almost the
moment he arrived at the school. He was an outstanding student of Business Management
and Business Administration, and in Form VI he took up Economics for the first time and proved
to be equally adept and talented. His teacher commented that he produced essays of a very
high standard and that he has quickly grasped and understood complex economic theories.
Mature and confident in discussion, he is both a flexible and an incisive thinker who will add a
great deal to any tutorial situation.
Outside the classroom he was equally impressive. Of his involvement on Young Enterprise the
Head of Business Studies said, ‘Iulian is a very dedicated young man who has assumed a
leadership role this year as the Managing Director of the company; I have every confidence
that he will manage others in ways that bring out the best in everyone and that all goals will
be easily achieved.’ On the school’s Charities Committee, he was always first to volunteer, no
matter what the task might be, and was unfailingly proactive, enthusiastic and inventive in his
thinking.
