World Water Day
OK Baby Boomers, bet many of you once felt you had the monopoly on peace, love and
understanding, bringing harmony to the world, dating all the way back to Earth Day and
Woodstock. Well much has changed in 40 plus years, and we are rapidly coming up on a
different kind of annual celebration that may still sound very familiar.
Slated each year for March 22nd
for more than two decades, World Water Day is an
initiative that grew out of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and
Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro from the next generation. The UN General
Assembly has since marked this day as an opportunity to bring global water issues to
worldwide attention. It documents, diagnoses and details how water links us all to the
future we want.
Never heard of World Water Day?
A quick Google search reveals numerous articles and videos championing the cause. The
WWW we commonly know as websites and addresses is cleverly repositioned as the
World Wide Well, where we understand that water flows through rivers and streams, just
as it flows through each and every one of us. A bit of Mother Earth hyperbole to be sure,
but observers of World Water Day are correct to point out that unsafe water kills more
people than war, and more than 95% of available fresh water on the planet is polluted.
If you are new to the March 22nd
observance, each year the United Nations brings
renewed focus to the issues of the day from a different vantage point, raising and
exploring different themes. Previous themes have included:
The World is Thirsty Because We Are Hungry (2012)
International Year of Water Cooperation (2013)
Water and Energy (2014)
For 2015, it is Water and Sustainable Development
It is meant to bring to light the many uses of water in all its aspects:
As stated on the current www.unwater.org site, “Water is Health; Water is Nature; Water
is Urbanization; Industry; Energy; Food; Equality, and so on. Humanity Needs Water, A
drop of water is flexible. A drop of water is powerful. A drop of water is in demand.
Water is at the core of sustainable development.”
Baby Boomers know these mantras have been with us for a long time. In a sense, they are
ideals worthy of discussion, but perhaps more to the point, water is also very real global
problems like flood and drought. To the UN’s credit, these crises are not ignored. There
are publications readily available from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO)
and the Global Water Partnership (GWP) highlighted on the unwater.org website.

students will not want to stop practicing these pieces!
Focus on…
W.T. Skye Garcia (Interview with FJH Composer - one featured every issue, pgs. 4-5)
FJH What musical influences did you have early in life?
WTSG My parents were not musicians but were avid listeners. I remember all the excitement the day we
got a beautiful, new “hi-fi” system. As a family, we listened to everything—classics, big band, calypso,
Spanish love songs, etc. Given a choice of watching TV or listening to music for an hour, I would choose
the music!
FJH What kind of musical training did you receive growing up?
WTSG Band was offered starting in 4th
grade, and I played the trumpet. I got to be pretty good at it but
was never really satisfied with the instrument. My high school’s music program has been consistently
ranked in the top 100 nationwide. We had a huge marching band, a terrific concert band, a full orchestra
and a jazz band. Everyone was required to be in the choir too.
FJH So how did you find your way to the piano?
WTSG I was a physics major at Colorado State University when I used some of my elective hours to take
music theory and piano class. I really enjoyed both classes and was surprised at how well I did alongside
the music majors. I thought my music courses were a lot easier than my physics courses! I went ahead and
finished my physics degree but began making plans for further music study.
Bob Snow - Writing Samples 2015
FJH Did you ever work as a physicist?
WTSG Yes. For one year I worked at the Hanford Reservation in Washington devising and testing ways
of measuring radiation doses. I bought a used piano with my first paycheck, found a good teacher, and
spent most of my free time practicing. After a year, I decided to go back to school to major in music.
Ultimately, I achieved two masters of music degrees.
FJH At any point did you ever consider returning to your previous career?
WTSG For quite some time, my mom was fond of reminding me that I could “always go back to being a
physicist.” But the more I learned about myself, the more certain I became about pursuing a career in
music. I love the interaction of working and teaching both one on one and in group settings. It is also very
special to me to be a part of my students’ lives from elementary school through high school. I take great
satisfaction in sharing all that music has to offer with my students. Music is as much about people as it is
about notes.
FJH You sometimes hear that science, math and music have a lot in common. Has
this been your experience?
WTSG My physics degree taught me how to think in the abstract. My math studies taught me to think
rationally. Both were excellent preparation for music study. The creative processes of science have a lot in
common with creativity in music. Problem solving in mathematics is very akin to problem solving in
composition.
FJH What led you to become a composer?
WTSG I had been teaching privately for about 15 years—35 students a week. 48 weeks a year—that’s
more than 25,000 lessons! As I came to better understand my students’ needs and capabilities, I began
writing pieces for specific individuals. I still like to compose in this manner.
FJH What advice do you have for young composers?
WTSG Several things come to mind. First, play and listen to lots of music; all kinds. Build a foundation
upon the works of those who have gone before you. Second, write down your ideas—no matter how
unworthy they may seem. Once you’ve written something down, it can be improved, corrected and
developed in much the same way as one works with the various drafts of an English term paper. Finally, as
with any discipline, the more you work at it the more proficient you become. This means, the more pieces
you write the better composer you will become. The act of composing is in itself a great teacher. Piece by
piece the composer discovers and develops his own style.
FJH What can we expect from you in the future?
WTSG For me, composing is very much like writing my autobiography. I continually find inspiration in
the day to day occurrences of my life. Watching my 10 year old son, Zachary, grow up has given me the
chance to rediscover the world through the eyes of a child, so many of my compositions are written from
this perspective. My new elementary book (Editor—coming soon), “I Love My Piano,” is all about a
child’s fascination upon entering the world of piano study. Parachuting and boogie boarding at the ocean
are also experiences that have found their way into upcoming solo releases. A recent trip to Scott Joplin’s
home in St. Louis pretty much assures I’ll be writing some more ragtime in the near future!

FJH Clinicians Star in Las Vegas
Randall Faber, Helen Marlais, Melody Bober, Kevin Olson and Timothy Brown featured at the World
Piano Pedagogy Conference.
Bob Snow - Writing Samples 2015
In 2004, after a brief absence, the World Piano Pedagogy Conference (WPPC) returned to Las Vegas,
Nevada, October 27-30, to once again invite piano professionals everywhere to experience the exciting
surroundings.
At this convention, FJH Music had the distinct pleasure of hosting two fabulous showcases. The first, “New
Tools for Older Beginners,” was given by perennial favorite Randall Faber, whose presentations regularly
incorporate video which bring his Piano Adventures®
to life. All those in attendance received a
complimentary packet of these newest, featured publications: Accelerated Piano Adventures®
for the Older
Beginner, which are available in familiar Lesson, Theory, Performance, Popular Repertoire, and Technique
& Artistry books.
The second, “Succeeding with Literature,” was given by Helen Marlais, with Melody Bober, Timothy
Brown and Kevin Olson all featured. Together, they explored successful repertoire, from the timeless
Succeeding with the Masters™ to the most engaging FJH composers and arrangers found within In Recital
Throughout the Year™ (with Performance Strategies). Those in attendance were treated to Helen Marlais’
pedagogical insights as she guided them through characteristics of the eras, practice strategies, recital
preparation tips, performing-for-an-audience suggestions, and more they followed along in their
complimentary packets.
In keeping with the spirit of the In Recital books, all four presenters joined in a humorous sketch to present
Melody Bober’s ensemble arrangement of themes from Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2. The men
(Olson and Brown) played the first half, then the ladies (Bober and Marlais) impatiently “cut in.” Everyone
took part in the triumphant finale before an appreciative audience.

Group and Individual Health Insurance - XXXXXXXX Agencies
Overview
Being employed in today’s Florida and nationwide no longer means being insured. For those of
us lucky enough to have coverage with our employers, we know most policies fall short of the
mark at some point. To avoid surprises, it is prudent to review the basics: What’s the maximum
benefit of the policy? What specific services are covered? What’s the yearly deductible? What are
the costs of the premiums? Keep current on your situation. Make sure you have coverage where
the need is greatest and make changes promptly should your status change.
Recurring Services
Even if you are looking to find insurance for yourself alone, list your annual expenses. Checkups,
eye exams / glasses, physical therapy, chiropractic treatments, etc. all add up. Discover which
plans, including co-pays, are the best matches for your specific case.

Example 7b: Highlights from the Index
To Go or Not To Go: Developing an Approach
Priorities and Pitfalls
From - Getting the Most out of Your Conference:
Don't ever try to connect with a session speaker after they've just spoken, because you'll
be in a group with all the other people from that session. Rather, do your homework ahead of
time and figure out who makes the most sense to meet with, and reach out to them. - Inc.com
If you write anything down during a conference, make it the one key take-away from
each presentation that is worth additional consideration upon your return to real life. -
99u.com
Stroll the convention floor. Most conventions have dozens of exhibitors and vendors
displaying the latest industry information and products. Make sure you carve out a block of
time to peruse the convention floor. Stay away from those time-wasters who ask you to fill
out surveys and watch their presentations.
- Allbusiness.com
You won’t be able to spend the whole year traveling from con to con if you ever hope to
have time to build your business. It’s better to start with two: one big, national convention
and one local/regional. This way you get your name out nationally and build your reputation
locally at the same time. Never underestimate the loyalty of a local client base and audience. -
freshpeel.com
From - Should You Go (Yes!), What to Take
Position yourself as an expert. When you are active in your industry, you can develop a
reputation as an expert to your peers and your clients. Those who are engaged over the long
term are often asked to speak at the events and to write articles for their industry publications.
Like it or not, others like to associate with the experts in any industry. - mastercardbiz.com
When you propose a conference for approvals, don’t focus on how much you want to go;
focus on what you will specifically bring back to the organization as payback for the
investment. - writing assist.com
Bob Snow - Writing Samples 2015
If you and your team are traveling for a conference, there will be some expenses
involved. Treat the expenses as an investment, and the benefits you gain from the conference
as a return on that investment. You will be able to apply the knowledge gained from the
conference successfully in your professional life.
- Blog.conventionbusinesstravel.com
From: Heightening Awareness, Efficiently and Effectively
Your custom trade show exhibit should be designed and arranged in much the same way
as a highway billboard. Billboards are designed such that vehicle passengers can quickly read
and understand the message as they zoom past at 80 kilometres (50 miles) per hour. -
Smarttradeshows.com
Ask meaningful questions of the people you meet. Everyone else is asking, "Where are
you from?" and "Where do you work?" and other small talk at conferences. Larry Benet
taught me to ask better questions, such as "What are you most passionate about?" and "What
charity do you care most about?" and "Who at this conference would you most like to be
connected with?" That way, you get people talking about something they really care about,
and you can form a more meaningful relationship faster. - LinkedIn.com
From: Common Errors to Sidestep
People respond to your booth layout a lot like they respond to body language. Is your
booth language saying I am not open to any interaction? It can easily say “yes come talk with
us”, we are open for business! If you’re just putting up a table and chairs at the front of your
booth, STOP and lets rethink this. I see this booth layout all the time and it is a shame; your
booth language is saying, “STAY BACK” or “DON’T BOTHER ME!” - elevatepromo.com
While it's best to attend the show yourself, if you absolutely can't attend, send a top-level,
knowledgeable employee who has the power to make decisions on your behalf—including
negotiations. Nothing annoys attendees more than a presenter who can't answer their
questions - tsnn.com

Bob Snow - writing sample collection 2015

  • 1. Bob Snow - Writing Samples 2015 Example #1 World Water Day OK Baby Boomers, bet many of you once felt you had the monopoly on peace, love and understanding, bringing harmony to the world, dating all the way back to Earth Day and Woodstock. Well much has changed in 40 plus years, and we are rapidly coming up on a different kind of annual celebration that may still sound very familiar. Slated each year for March 22nd for more than two decades, World Water Day is an initiative that grew out of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro from the next generation. The UN General Assembly has since marked this day as an opportunity to bring global water issues to worldwide attention. It documents, diagnoses and details how water links us all to the future we want. Never heard of World Water Day? A quick Google search reveals numerous articles and videos championing the cause. The WWW we commonly know as websites and addresses is cleverly repositioned as the World Wide Well, where we understand that water flows through rivers and streams, just as it flows through each and every one of us. A bit of Mother Earth hyperbole to be sure, but observers of World Water Day are correct to point out that unsafe water kills more people than war, and more than 95% of available fresh water on the planet is polluted. If you are new to the March 22nd observance, each year the United Nations brings renewed focus to the issues of the day from a different vantage point, raising and exploring different themes. Previous themes have included: The World is Thirsty Because We Are Hungry (2012) International Year of Water Cooperation (2013) Water and Energy (2014) For 2015, it is Water and Sustainable Development It is meant to bring to light the many uses of water in all its aspects: As stated on the current www.unwater.org site, “Water is Health; Water is Nature; Water is Urbanization; Industry; Energy; Food; Equality, and so on. Humanity Needs Water, A drop of water is flexible. A drop of water is powerful. A drop of water is in demand. Water is at the core of sustainable development.” Baby Boomers know these mantras have been with us for a long time. In a sense, they are ideals worthy of discussion, but perhaps more to the point, water is also very real global problems like flood and drought. To the UN’s credit, these crises are not ignored. There are publications readily available from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the Global Water Partnership (GWP) highlighted on the unwater.org website.

MOTIVATING TODAY’S STUDENTS: In Recital Throughout the Year™ (with Performance Strategies) Then, explore another new series with us, through In Recital Throughout the Year™, edited by Helen Marlais. These books, which each include a companion CD, are chock-full of musically engaging pieces by leading FJH composers and arrangers: Melody Bober, Timothy Brown, Kevin Costley, Martin Cuéllar, Christopher Goldston, Elizabeth W. Greenleaf, David Karp, Mary Leaf, Edwin McLean, Kevin Olson, Valerie Roth Roubos and Judith R. Strickland all contributing. These six carefully leveled books contain original solos and duets, arrangements of famous classical themes and pieces for holiday recitals. Your students will not want to stop practicing these pieces! Focus on… W.T. Skye Garcia (Interview with FJH Composer - one featured every issue, pgs. 4-5) FJH What musical influences did you have early in life? WTSG My parents were not musicians but were avid listeners. I remember all the excitement the day we got a beautiful, new “hi-fi” system. As a family, we listened to everything—classics, big band, calypso, Spanish love songs, etc. Given a choice of watching TV or listening to music for an hour, I would choose the music! FJH What kind of musical training did you receive growing up? WTSG Band was offered starting in 4th grade, and I played the trumpet. I got to be pretty good at it but was never really satisfied with the instrument. My high school’s music program has been consistently ranked in the top 100 nationwide. We had a huge marching band, a terrific concert band, a full orchestra and a jazz band. Everyone was required to be in the choir too. FJH So how did you find your way to the piano? WTSG I was a physics major at Colorado State University when I used some of my elective hours to take music theory and piano class. I really enjoyed both classes and was surprised at how well I did alongside the music majors. I thought my music courses were a lot easier than my physics courses! I went ahead and finished my physics degree but began making plans for further music study.
  • 3. Bob Snow - Writing Samples 2015 FJH Did you ever work as a physicist? WTSG Yes. For one year I worked at the Hanford Reservation in Washington devising and testing ways of measuring radiation doses. I bought a used piano with my first paycheck, found a good teacher, and spent most of my free time practicing. After a year, I decided to go back to school to major in music. Ultimately, I achieved two masters of music degrees. FJH At any point did you ever consider returning to your previous career? WTSG For quite some time, my mom was fond of reminding me that I could “always go back to being a physicist.” But the more I learned about myself, the more certain I became about pursuing a career in music. I love the interaction of working and teaching both one on one and in group settings. It is also very special to me to be a part of my students’ lives from elementary school through high school. I take great satisfaction in sharing all that music has to offer with my students. Music is as much about people as it is about notes. FJH You sometimes hear that science, math and music have a lot in common. Has this been your experience? WTSG My physics degree taught me how to think in the abstract. My math studies taught me to think rationally. Both were excellent preparation for music study. The creative processes of science have a lot in common with creativity in music. Problem solving in mathematics is very akin to problem solving in composition. FJH What led you to become a composer? WTSG I had been teaching privately for about 15 years—35 students a week. 48 weeks a year—that’s more than 25,000 lessons! As I came to better understand my students’ needs and capabilities, I began writing pieces for specific individuals. I still like to compose in this manner. FJH What advice do you have for young composers? WTSG Several things come to mind. First, play and listen to lots of music; all kinds. Build a foundation upon the works of those who have gone before you. Second, write down your ideas—no matter how unworthy they may seem. Once you’ve written something down, it can be improved, corrected and developed in much the same way as one works with the various drafts of an English term paper. Finally, as with any discipline, the more you work at it the more proficient you become. This means, the more pieces you write the better composer you will become. The act of composing is in itself a great teacher. Piece by piece the composer discovers and develops his own style. FJH What can we expect from you in the future? WTSG For me, composing is very much like writing my autobiography. I continually find inspiration in the day to day occurrences of my life. Watching my 10 year old son, Zachary, grow up has given me the chance to rediscover the world through the eyes of a child, so many of my compositions are written from this perspective. My new elementary book (Editor—coming soon), “I Love My Piano,” is all about a child’s fascination upon entering the world of piano study. Parachuting and boogie boarding at the ocean are also experiences that have found their way into upcoming solo releases. A recent trip to Scott Joplin’s home in St. Louis pretty much assures I’ll be writing some more ragtime in the near future! Issue 172, Cover Page: FJH Clinicians Star in Las Vegas Randall Faber, Helen Marlais, Melody Bober, Kevin Olson and Timothy Brown featured at the World Piano Pedagogy Conference.
  • 4. Bob Snow - Writing Samples 2015 In 2004, after a brief absence, the World Piano Pedagogy Conference (WPPC) returned to Las Vegas, Nevada, October 27-30, to once again invite piano professionals everywhere to experience the exciting surroundings. At this convention, FJH Music had the distinct pleasure of hosting two fabulous showcases. The first, “New Tools for Older Beginners,” was given by perennial favorite Randall Faber, whose presentations regularly incorporate video which bring his Piano Adventures® to life. All those in attendance received a complimentary packet of these newest, featured publications: Accelerated Piano Adventures® for the Older Beginner, which are available in familiar Lesson, Theory, Performance, Popular Repertoire, and Technique & Artistry books. The second, “Succeeding with Literature,” was given by Helen Marlais, with Melody Bober, Timothy Brown and Kevin Olson all featured. Together, they explored successful repertoire, from the timeless Succeeding with the Masters™ to the most engaging FJH composers and arrangers found within In Recital Throughout the Year™ (with Performance Strategies). Those in attendance were treated to Helen Marlais’ pedagogical insights as she guided them through characteristics of the eras, practice strategies, recital preparation tips, performing-for-an-audience suggestions, and more they followed along in their complimentary packets. In keeping with the spirit of the In Recital books, all four presenters joined in a humorous sketch to present Melody Bober’s ensemble arrangement of themes from Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2. The men (Olson and Brown) played the first half, then the ladies (Bober and Marlais) impatiently “cut in.” Everyone took part in the triumphant finale before an appreciative audience.
