The Ag Ambassadors Club served 350 people at the 10th Annual Central Coast Young Farmers and Ranchers Crab Feed, with 5 courses served to 50 tables within 40 minutes. In return, the Young Farmers and Ranchers donated to the Ambassadors Club for scholarships. The Hartnell Planetarium and the Cesar Chavez Branch of the Salinas Public Library partnered on a "Look to the Stars" program for 20 local students over four weekends to learn about astronomy and build telescopes. The final event was a star party attended by nearly 50 people using student and large telescopes. Hartnell alumna Jessica Mattos was named the Red Lion Women's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week for

The Ag Ambassadors Club shared their culinary talents and wait-
staff skills at the 10th Annual Central Coast Young Farmers and
Ranchers Crab Feed.
The students served 350 people at 50 tables with 5 courses - and all
accomplished within a 40 minute time period.
In return, the Young Farmers and Ranchers made a donation to the
Ag Ambassadors Club for scholarships. The club is advised by
Agriculture Industrial Technology faculty member Albert Graham.
Saturday, April 5 saw the conclusion of "Look to the Stars," a
special series of classes for area students in grades 5 – 8. This
collaborative project was organized by the Hartnell
Planetarium and the Cesar Chavez Branch of the Salinas
Public Library. Twenty students from eleven area schools took
part over four weekends to learn about the body in space,
astronomy, optics, and to build their own telescope from a
kit. Cesar Chavez Library served as home base for the class, but the students also
enjoyed field trips to Hartnell’s Planetarium and Chabot
Space & Science Center in Oakland. The final meeting of
“Look to the Stars” included friends and family, as nearly
50 people gathered for a star party at the library to look at
the moon, Jupiter and other celestial sights through both
the students’ telescopes and a larger one provided by the
planetarium.
This community partnership was developed by Don Gardner of the Cesar Chavez
Library and Andy Kreyche, Planetarium Educator at Hartnell. Various staff and
volunteers from both Hartnell and the library helped facilitate the project. Higher level
students were hired as mentors to serve as role models to the students, and helpers for
the facilitators. Hartnell student Melody Sanchez of the
Hartnell MESA (Math Engineering and Science Achievement)
program served as a college mentor along with a member of
the Salinas High Astronomy Club. Both mentors took part in a
special training workshop and provided valuable help
throughout the sessions. The class was provided free of
charge thanks to the financial support of the library, the
planetarium, Hartnell’s Science and Math Institute and other
donors. The mood at Saturday’s event was upbeat, with
many compliments from the participants and their parents. When asked what would

improve the class, the most common suggestion given by the students was to have
more class meetings, although one of them said, “I can ask for nothing more than this
cool class.”
Alumna Jessica Mattos Red Lion Women’s Outdoor Field athlete of
the Week
Jessica Mattos was named the Red Lion Women's Outdoor Field
Athlete of the Week for the second week since March. Mattos, a
junior from Corralitos, CA, won a pair of events at the
Concordia/Willamette Dual, taking the discus crown by 20 feet
with a 146-1 (44.53m) and the hammer title by five feet with a 149-
3 (45.49m). Mattos is currently No. 2 in the NAIA in the discus with a
155-4 (47.34m) season best.
Alumna Amy Johnston making headlines at Metro State
Now at Metro State, Hartnell Alumna Amy Johnston was named
Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference track athlete of the week
on Wednesday. It is her first career athlete of the week award.
Johnston, a junior, became Metro State's first national qualifier
on Saturday at the Front Range Open in Golden, Colorado.

The Softball team went to Ohlone Thursday, March
27. The team took an early lead (3-0); they got 2 in
the 4th inning; we got 1 in the top of the 6th; they
got 2 in the bottom of the 6th to tie it at 4-4. We
were unable to catch a fly ball in right field with the
bases loaded in the 7th inning. We took the loss 4-5.
Tuesday, April 1, we played Chabot at home. In a
9-1 (8-run rule) game in 6 innings, Alma Gallegos got
us started in the 1st with a double. We went on to
score 3 runs in the 1st and 2 in the 2nd. Pitcher Dani Blaylock was unstoppable.
Friday, we traveled to San Francisco. They were up 1-0, but in the top of the 3rd inning
we got 5 runs and never looked back, winning 14-5 in 6 innings. Again, Dani Blaylock
