This document describes CloudOne's BlueMix+Jazz VPC offering which provides IBM's Jazz platform software in a secure virtual private cloud. It allows clients to develop applications in BlueMix's public cloud environment while keeping sensitive data and systems of record private. The CloudOne managed service provides upgrades and support for the Jazz platform on demand, unlike BlueMix's automatic upgrades, reducing potential downtime. The document outlines how BlueMix and CloudOne complement each other by allowing development in BlueMix and integration with private systems.

What
is
BlueMix?
BlueMix
is
a
multi-­‐tenant
Platform
as
a
Service
(PaaS)
in
the
Public
Cloud.
The
BlueMix
environment
is
based
on
Cloud
Foundry
technology,
which
is
an
open
source
PaaS.
BlueMix
provides
services
that
are
above
and
beyond
what
is
provided
by
Cloud
Foundry.
It
includes
services
like
Node.js,
Cloudant,
WebSphere
eXtreme
Scale
and
Elastic
MQ
(WebSphere
MQ)
just
to
name
a
few.

As
BlueMix
is
based
on
Cloud
Foundry,
in
Cloud
Foundry,
in
Cloud
Foundry
parlance
it
provides
“Managed
Services.”
That
means
these
are
actual
Cloud
Foundry
services
that
will
scale
an
application
as
it
leverages
these
services
to
build
cloud-­‐based
applications.
Imagine
a
client
wants
to
build
an
application
and
readily
deploy
the
new
“Tumblr”
services.
The
client
can
choose
various
services
on
BlueMix,
catalog,
bind
them
together,
develop
code,
and
deploy
and
scale
the
application
accordingly
in
a
multi-­‐
tenant
environment.
BlueMix
also
comes
with
DevOps
as
a
service,
which
is
lightweight
version
control,
defect
tracking
and
planning
solution
for
developing
applications
in
the
Public
Cloud.
Typical
client
for
BlueMix
environment
The
typical
user
for
BlueMix
would
be
a
small
company,
“garage
entrepreneneurs,”
or
Enterprise
clients
wanting
to
develop
“skunk
works”
projects
for
the
Cloud
environment.
Some
of
the
clients
can
also
use
BlueMix
to
build
“Systems
of
Engagement”
type
applications
for
their
in-­‐house
“System
of
Record”
type
applications.
For
example,
imagine
an
insurance
company
wanted
to
build
an
EZClaim
system
through
an
iPhone
application.
The
iPhone
application
development
environment
could
be
on
BlueMix.
When
the
application
captures
personal
information
which
cannot
reside
on
BlueMix,
that
application
may
transmit
the
information
back
into
the
company’s
database
behind
a
firewall.

Managed
Services
for
Jazz
CloudOne
provides
the
entire
Jazz
Platform
in
an
unshared,
secure
Virtual
Private
Cloud
(VPC).
Consider
the
CloudOne
offering
as
a
soft
appliance
delivered
via
the
Cloud.
It
is
further
augmented
by
CloudOne’s
World
Class
Managed
Services
capability.

Unlike
the
Managed
Services
as
described
by
CloudFoundry,
the
CloudOne
managed
service
is
like
an
on-­‐demand
IT
organization
supporting
your
integrated
Rational
Platform
Software
Appliance
in
the
Cloud.
In
the
case
for
BlueMix,
services
can
be
upgraded
based
on
the
vendor
providing
the
services.
For
instance,
a
new
version
of
CloudFoundry
is
released
and
the
BlueMix
support
team
will
upgrade
everyone
who
is
on
the
BlueMix
environment.
In
the
case
of
CloudOne’s
VPC
and
Managed
Services,
it
can
be
upgraded
at
your
time
of
choosing.
If
there
are
any
integration
issues
that
need
to
be
addressed,
they
are
attended
to
early
on
in
mock
upgrades,
etc.
This
allows
the
development
environment
not
to
go
offline
for
several
days.
