Blade Runner (1982)
Director: Ridley Scott
I love to see interpretations of the future. Some interpretations are of utopia while
others are dystopian, both I think can serve as cautionary tales in a way. I chose
this scene from one of my many favorite sci-fi movies. A seemingly innocent visit to
a noodle stand turns out to be the start of the movie. I like this scene in particular
because it establishes many things in the scene like, Dekkard is retired, the
environment is wet, cold and atmospheric, there is evidence of overpopulation,
police help maintain order, different languages are being spoken, people are
multilingual, technology is still paramount, evidence for living off-world (so we have
conquered space travel and have made it such that it is affordable), there are flying
cars!, buildings are more congested and bigger in scale, ads, commercialism still
drives our need for consumption, socio-economic is still defined by capitalism.
Outside, night, raining. People walking by noodle stand.
Neon signs behind main character, Dekkard. Waiting for seat at noodle stand.
Overhead, a floating blimp passes by with ads for living off-world.
Noodle stand employee motions over that there is an open seat.
Dekkard sits down and greets.
Dekkard motions to employee. I want 4 items and noodles.
Dekkard prepares to eat by getting chopsticks.
While Dekkard starts to eat another person, walks up from behind. He refers to Dekkard as a
BLADE RUNNER.
Dekkard responds. “You got the wrong guy pal, I’m eating”
He mentions the chief of police’s name. Bryant. Dekkard agrees to go along.
They both get inside a car.
Flying car starts to launch off from the ground.
With noodles still in hand, they both travel to the Police Station to meet Bryant.
