ICING TECHNOLOGY AND REAL LIFE BLADE PERFORMANCE IN COLD CLIMATES
Did you know that at least 52 GW of wind energy projects have been deployed in icy climates across the globe and an additional 30 GW are
expected by 2017?
Despite numerous technological advances in counteracting icing and cold climate issues, the industry is not quite where it needs to be,
especially due to the unpredictability of icing and winter temperature variation.
North American and Canadian wind sites are no stranger to icing and extreme low temperatures, which is why this half-day workshop has
the intention to offer you the right tools to counteract unique issues caused by ice on blades as well as explore different solutions currently
available on the market.
Key topics include:
V Development of fit for purpose materials and testing of surfaces
V De-icing and anti-icing systems to avoid production loss: trials and onsite experience
V Quantification of icing impact on energy loss
V The role of weather forecast in predicting icing behavior
V Practical lessons learnt from operational blade performance in cold climates
Hosts include:
Jay Steffensmeier
Regional Director
Suzlon
Matthew Wadham-Gagnon
Project Lead

HIGH FREQUENCY TALKS
13:00 To What Extent Are Drones A Viable Commercial Solution To Inspect Blades?
The aim of these high frequency talks is to facilitate the discussion on how drones could
contribute to blade inspections as well as how the former, when integrated with a data
acquisition and categorization software, could truly have an impact on the way damages are
being analyzed, monitored and managed today.
Each delegate will be given the chance to express their thoughts, concerns, ideas and solutions
anonymously and in written form (5 minutes) through an online platform called Sli.do. The
moderator will then read out loud the audienceโs suggestions on how the industry can progress
on these issues. The debate will then be opened up to the rest of the room, making this
the perfect occasion to take a real step forward and overcome the barriers of using drones.
