This biomedical science dissertation will review gap junctions, which are membrane channels that allow molecules and ions to pass directly between cells. Gap junctions are formed by connexin and innexin proteins and play a role in cell signaling. The dissertation will examine how dysfunctional gap junctions are linked to various human disorders such as neuropathy and epilepsy. It will also explore gap junctions as potential therapeutic targets and will include an analysis of data on their involvement in disease.
