2. WHY DO WE USE BIOACTIVE
MATERIALS IN THIS CENTURY?
1. To remineralise and strengthen the tooth structure
through fluoride release and/or through the release
of other materials.
2. Forming an Apatite-like material on its surface
when immersed in body body fluid or simulated by
body fluid ( SBF ) over time.
3. Regenerate live tissues to promote the vitality in
the tooth.

3. BIOACTIVITY IN RESTORATIVE
DENTISTRY
• Materials that remineralize
Glass Ionomer cements
Giomers
• Materials that can regenerate live tissues
Mineral Trioxide aggregate (MTA)
Biodentine
• Materials that deposit hydroxyapatite

5. MINERAL TRIOXIDE AGGREGATE
MTA is a bioactive material that is mainly composed of calcium and
silicate. Tricalcium aluminate, gypsum and tetracalcium
aluminoferrite. These calcium silicate containing materials have a
common characteristic of apatite formation. This is a material of
choise for vital pulp therapy, apexification and apexogenesis,
correcting procedural errors as well as for root-end filling material in
apicoectomy procedures.

6. MTA ADVANTAGES OVER CALCIUM
HYDROXIDE
• Rapid cell growth promotion in Vitro
• Greater ability to maintain the integrity of pulp tissue
• Thicker dentinal bridge, less inflammation, less hyperemia and
less pulp necrosis
• Induce the formation of dental bridge at faster rate
• High ability to resist the penetration of microorganisms
• Limited antibacterial effect

9. DIRECT PULP CAPPING USING MTA
In exposed pulps, to preserve the pulpal vitality, MTA is used as a
pulp capping material. It prevents bacterial leakage with a high
level of biocompatibility.
MTA simulates dentin bridge formation adjacent to dental pulp.
Dentinogenesis of pulp due to its sealing ability, biocompatibility,
alkalinity and other properties healing. It forms a complete
barrier at exposure site with free of inflammation.

11. BIODENTINE
Biodentine can be used as a complete
dentin replacement material to treat
damaged dentin both in the crown and
root with clinical indications that exceed
those of MTA and other related Portland
cement calcium silicate products.

of modified powder composition of
MTA.
Biodentin is available as powder in
a capsule or liquid in a pipette
