This study aimed to promote weight reduction in overweight African Americans through a mall-walking program in Jackson, Mississippi. 260 participants with a BMI over 25 between ages 18-65 were randomly assigned to a control group with access only to the mall-walking route, or groups that also received encouragement from a counselor or peer. Over 6 months, the only group that saw a significant weight loss was the peer group, which lost an average of 5.25 pounds, suggesting that regular mall-walking with a friend or partner can help lead to weight loss.
