Covey says most people look for quick fixes. They see a big success and want to know how he did it, believing (and hoping) they can do the same following a quick bullet list.
But real change, the author says, comes not from the outside in, but from the inside out. And the most fundamental way of changing yourself is through a paradigm shift.
That paradigm shift is a new way of looking at the world. The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People presents an approach to effectiveness based on character and principles.
The first three habits indeed deal with yourself because it all starts with you. The first three habits move you from dependence from the world to the independence of making your own world.
Habits 4, 5 and 6 are about people and relationships. The will move you from independence to interdependence. Such, cooperating to achieve more than you could have by yourself.
The last habit, habit number 7, focuses on continuous growth and improvement.

9. Bethamy Hamilton (2011)
Teenage surfer Bethany Hamilton overcomes the odds and her own fears of
returning to the water after losing her left arm in a shark attack.
Bethany Hamilton: I was born to surf. This is why I
wake up at the crack of dawn everyday. This is
why I endure belly rashes, reef cuts and muscles so
tired they feel like needles. And I've learned life is
a lot like surfing. When you get caught in the
impact zone, you need to get right back up.
Because you never know what's over the next
wave. And if you have faith, anything is possible,
anything at all.
Bethany Hamilton: [Bethany begins to cry over her missing
arm] You know how you said it's hard to see things clearly
sometimes, when you're too close? Well, I've been trying to get
some perspective, I'm literally trying. Sarah... how could this be
God's plan for me? I don't understand.
Sarah Hill: I don't know why terrible things happen to us
sometimes. But I have to believe that something good is going
to come out of this.
10. Amberley Snyder (2019)
Amberley Snyder: [to her horse, at her first rodeo event after
the accident] Hey, Bubba. They said you and I would never be
back here. Welcome to never.
Amberley Snyder: When the doctors asked what my goals
were, I said, "Walk. Ride. Rodeo." I got the last two. About that
first one... maybe one day.
Amberley Snyder: Attitude is a little thing that makes a big
difference. I realize, maybe I won't have control over every
situation in my life. Maybe I don't get to make every
decision. But when I wake up in the morning, I get to
decide my attitude. -... - And if that's the only decision I get
to make that day - I better make it a good one. Because with
the right attitude, who knows what you can achieve?
Tells the incredible true story of Amberley
Snyder, a nationally ranked rodeo barrel
racer who defies the odds after barely
surviving a car accident that leaves her
paralyzed from the waist down.
Amberley has turned her tragedy into triumph and
is inspiring all of America to Get Back on the
Horse.
11. BEYONDER
BEYONDER comes from within … your heart – your believes
…. therefore coached not trained/schooled nor learned ……
Principles - formed out of your beliefs / your challenges
Therefore not a “book” solution!
Therefore mentioned in the same breath as creativity – “Your
creativity takes you beyond!”
BEYONDER //// TRANSFORMATION
TRANSFORMATION =
Creativity + Courage
BEYONDER =
Courage + Creativity
13. What Is Creativity?
There are more than 400 registered definitions of creativity.
Creativity is …
… attitude. Creativity is not a talent or an action – it’s a choice
of attitude. You have to be positive about creativity, and only you
can choose your attitude!
… no longer just “a nice to have.” If you want to thrive in the
business world, you have to think creatively. The playing fields are
changing rapidly, and you simply can’t afford to be left behind. In
line for a promotion? Creativity may just give you the edge that you
need.
… shifting paradigms. Old things won’t let you get ahead.
Creativity is looking at the world from a different angle, from outside
the box.
Creativity is singing in your own key. Let the world
hear your song!
14. Ideas: Less Is Not More, More Is More
Move away from thinking “there’s only one right answer.” Train your
mind to think in more agile and fluent ways. These questions will
help:
• What else will work?
• What else is possible?
• Is this the only way?
• What ..?
• Why not try …?
• How do others feel about this?
The more ideas you come up with, the better your chances to
find a new way or even an astounding solution.
15. Converge: Pull yourself together!
CONVERGE
• Looking at your list of ideas:
• Affirm your ideas. Discipline yourself to think: What’s good about this?
• Consider each idea without prejudice.
• Evaluate the ideas critically. Remember, 80% of the value is hiding in 20% of the
options!
• Select the most relevant options. Remember your original goal, and check your
objectives. Don’t go for splendid ideas that don’t solve the problem.
• Improve your ideas. Most of us feel proud yet vulnerable when presenting a new
idea. Remember, every bright idea flows from a great deal of careful thinking!
Praising an idea first is a good technique to spare feelings and improve ideas.
16. Diverging: Good Things Do Happen to Bad Ideas
The golden rule of creative thinking is to first diverge and then
converge.
To get the best ideas, make sure you do both.
DIVERGE
• Accept all ideas – don’t judge or “edit” them.
• Generate as many ideas as possible.
• Seek wild ideas.
• Build on other people’s ideas.
• Often, bizarre ideas can result in a solution never thought possible.
Say what you want to leave them with – understanding of the term BEYONDER and the edge it can give you in your personal life and that of your business (or then at the office)
We all know – where there is a will there is a way! But how far are we willing to go to find it ….. Are we have a long enough breath (fit enough)?
In the books I have read, all the lessons I were told, all the opportunities I have been offered has almost invariably, always shared with me the WHAT!
I am still to be taught the HOW! That stays the elusive trade secret …. Seems to be the legacy kept back.
Cookbooks and critical messages (how to’s) not shared *example church funds raising sales” so where does it leave us.
Many professionals here, people with years of experience, tried and trusted solutions ……. So I doubt I can teach you anything today what I can do is to touch those internal cords …. Get you to play your own instrument and make your own music!
Minds Eye – more penetrating and focused than you may imagine!
What differentiations does a graduate have to others or a scholar from a College or a Technicon ……… what do you see POTENTIAL / OPPORTUNITIES / CHALLENGES …. The FUTURE?
Everything I share relates to you personally (in all spheres of life), to your team, to your company (companies), to your family, ………
You got to have these answers to these questions available and understood to accept change/growth ….. Be transformed …. Become a beyonder!
At least most businesses now start their strategies with the WHY?
Example IT company and spending time with their current problems/challenges and R & D accordingly! My believe is that we need to create problems which do not currently exist and work on solutions for them – that would give you tomorrows’ edge!
What differentiated these 2 sportswomen? Why could they stage a comeback beyond all expectations?
What drove them ……… did it happen overnight? What initiated the desire to succeed?
Yes – very important they had support also BEYOND all measure!
Question – did they ask for it or did they create that …..
Tell the story – mystical Father Christmas, Tooth Fairy, Easter Bunny, ……….. We grew up believing till one day we understood the “why” they existed because we are born creative easy. Then we were confronted by “Entrepreneurs” that mystical abilities/differentiators some were born with and now we evolved and the new Mystical is the “BEYONDER” - where they come from, were they taught, do they have a unique recipe, ……. NO they have BALLS …. Big ones! They have the COURAGE to follow through on what they SAW!
Ordinary state = current (standard) state …………. Courage to move through your fear and stretch your abilities/beliefs/resources/etc. to become that mystical “BEYONDER”
Research spanning more than 30 years showed that 98% of pre-school children measured, possessed a superb creative ability.
By the age of 10, only 15% of the same group had retained that level of creativity. It dropped to 10% at the age of 15, and right down to – brace yourself – 2% in adulthood.
George Bernard Shaw said: “If you have an apple and I have an apple and we exchange these apples, then you and I will still each have one apple. But if you have an idea and I have an idea and we exchange these ideas, then each of us will have two ideas.”
Once you are satisfied with your list of diverging ideas, you need to reduce and converge them to get to a creative solution.
Differentiator
First impressions can be deceiving!
Example of the SPUR ……. Focus on drawing in the parents through their children and extending their stay …… but missing out on the smaller detail – “kiddies cutlery”!
So in conclusion what am I focusing on and what am I bringing to the table?
Definitely no system ……. Never would ….. I prefer to act in the moment
Therefore apply all my skills, experience and knowledge as a generalist primarily applying coaching principles to ensure that the change comes from within – ito person and business! I do not tell what …. I share how and why you should want to, have to, prefer to, choose to …… selling not telling in the final instance!
