TURKEY'S DISCOVERY STAR
Istanbul - Cappadocia - Pamukkale - Canakkale - Izmir - Ankara
Travelers start this eleven day escorted exploration of Turkey in Istanbul, the nation's largest metropolitan
area and one of the few cities world-wide to span two continents. Three days in Istanbul include a visit to
the regal Topkapi Palace, the stunning Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque, and the ruins of the Hippodrome.
Then shop exotic merchandise at the immense Grand Bazaar before leaving for Ankara, the Turkish
capital that encapsulates the country's ancient and modern history. Next discover the otherworldly
landscape of Cappadocia where the rough earth has yielded clay for artisan pottery, caverns that house
underground cities, and tall pillars that suspend hermitages above the desert. To the east, Pamukkale
beholds another natural wonder-the "Cotton Castle", a collection of naturally formed terraces made of
sedimentary rock that has been deposited by hot springs over the centuries. Not far from this surprising
landscape, the cities of Izmir, Ephesus, Troy, Pergamon, and Canakkale reveal more of the spiritual,
military, and architectural mysteries cloaking this intriguing part of the world. Travelers reflect on the
stunning landmarks they have witnessed as they journey back to Istanbul to begin the trek home.
Day 1 - Fri Istanbul
Welcome to Istanbul's Ataturk International Airport, here you'll be met and
transferred to your hotel. Balance of the day is at leisure to explore a city
that has always been at a crossroads, between Asia and Europe, between
history and modernity, between conservatives and free-thinkers.
Day 2 - Sat Istanbul
This morning we visit the impressive Topkapi Palace, the residence of
mighty Ottoman Sultans, and Hagia Sophia, once a church, later a
mosque, and now a museum. After time for lunch on your own, you will be
taken to the Blue Mosque. Here, you will be impressed by the beauty of its
six minarets, unique architecture, marble latticework, and inside, by the
high ceiling lined with 20,000 blue tiles that give the mosque its popular
name. Stop by the Hippodrome. Center of the Byzantine life for 1,000
years, this is where chariot races and competitive athletic events took
place. Your tour ends with a visit of the Grand Bazaar, the world's biggest
and oldest shopping venue. (B)

Today we transfer to the airport for a short flight to Cappadocia (not
included). Transfer to the hotel and rest of the day is at leisure. Dinner and
overnight at hotel. (B,D)

for its fairy chimney rock formations. Whittled down by time and erosion, these figures stand as a
testament to the power of nature. Occupied as far back as the 4th Century, you can still see dwellings,
churches and underground cities that were carved into the surrounding formations. A tour of Kaymakli
Underground City, the widest underground city of this region, will be followed by a visit of a local pottery
workshop. Dinner and overnight at hotel in Cappadocia. (B,D)

  • 2. 10 Days / 9 Nights TURKEY'S DISCOVERY STAR Istanbul - Cappadocia - Pamukkale - Canakkale - Izmir - Ankara Travelers start this eleven day escorted exploration of Turkey in Istanbul, the nation's largest metropolitan area and one of the few cities world-wide to span two continents. Three days in Istanbul include a visit to the regal Topkapi Palace, the stunning Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque, and the ruins of the Hippodrome. Then shop exotic merchandise at the immense Grand Bazaar before leaving for Ankara, the Turkish capital that encapsulates the country's ancient and modern history. Next discover the otherworldly landscape of Cappadocia where the rough earth has yielded clay for artisan pottery, caverns that house underground cities, and tall pillars that suspend hermitages above the desert. To the east, Pamukkale beholds another natural wonder-the "Cotton Castle", a collection of naturally formed terraces made of sedimentary rock that has been deposited by hot springs over the centuries. Not far from this surprising landscape, the cities of Izmir, Ephesus, Troy, Pergamon, and Canakkale reveal more of the spiritual, military, and architectural mysteries cloaking this intriguing part of the world. Travelers reflect on the stunning landmarks they have witnessed as they journey back to Istanbul to begin the trek home. Day 1 - Fri Istanbul Welcome to Istanbul's Ataturk International Airport, here you'll be met and transferred to your hotel. Balance of the day is at leisure to explore a city that has always been at a crossroads, between Asia and Europe, between history and modernity, between conservatives and free-thinkers. Day 2 - Sat Istanbul This morning we visit the impressive Topkapi Palace, the residence of mighty Ottoman Sultans, and Hagia Sophia, once a church, later a mosque, and now a museum. After time for lunch on your own, you will be taken to the Blue Mosque. Here, you will be impressed by the beauty of its six minarets, unique architecture, marble latticework, and inside, by the high ceiling lined with 20,000 blue tiles that give the mosque its popular name. Stop by the Hippodrome. Center of the Byzantine life for 1,000 years, this is where chariot races and competitive athletic events took place. Your tour ends with a visit of the Grand Bazaar, the world's biggest and oldest shopping venue. (B) Day 3 - Sun Istanbul/Cappadocia Today we transfer to the airport for a short flight to Cappadocia (not included). Transfer to the hotel and rest of the day is at leisure. Dinner and overnight at hotel. (B,D) Day 4 - Mon Cappadocia After breakfast we visit Goreme, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its fairy chimney rock formations. Whittled down by time and erosion, these figures stand as a testament to the power of nature. Occupied as far back as the 4th Century, you can still see dwellings, churches and underground cities that were carved into the surrounding formations. A tour of Kaymakli Underground City, the widest underground city of this region, will be followed by a visit of a local pottery workshop. Dinner and overnight at hotel in Cappadocia. (B,D) Day 5 - Tue Cappadocia/Konya/Pamukkale After a visit of the Sultanhani Caravanserai, we head to Konya, the old capital of the Anatolian Seljuk Vacation Side Travel | 110 E Cedar St | Goodlettsville | Tennessee | 37072 Phone:.
