The USS Bennington was a small patrol gunboat commissioned in 1891 that served in the Spanish-American War and the Philippines insurrection. On July 21, 1905 while in San Diego harbor preparing to escort another ship, a young inexperienced fireman accidentally closed the wrong valve in the engine room, causing the steam pressure to drop to zero. This led to explosions that killed 65 crew members and injured 46 others. The Bennington was pulled to shore to prevent it from sinking but was decommissioned after being repaired, serving the rest of its career as a barge until being scrapped.
