Lightning Talk #9: How UX and Data Storytelling Can Shape Policy by Mika Aldabaux singapore
How can we take UX and Data Storytelling out of the tech context and use them to change the way government behaves?
Showcasing the truth is the highest goal of data storytelling. Because the design of a chart can affect the interpretation of data in a major way, one must wield visual tools with care and deliberation. Using quantitative facts to evoke an emotional response is best achieved with the combination of UX and data storytelling.

Asthma affects 300 million people worldwide out of a total population of 6 billion, and 30 million people in the United States out of a total US population of 1.4 billion. An asthma attack can be triggered by allergens like pollen, dust, pets, perfumes, smoke, and paint, and symptoms include coughing, heavy breathing, and chest pain. Relaxation techniques like belly breathing where one imagines their lungs filling like a balloon can help alleviate asthma symptoms during an attack.
This document contains summaries of several pictures related to Chinese opera costumes, makeup, and accessories. The summaries describe the colors, designs, and meanings represented in the costumes, as well as comments on the quality of the artwork.
This document provides instructions for a series of movements. It directs the reader to slowly raise and lower their arm, cross their hands slowly, push to the side, raise their arms and then right leg slowly, circle their arms and then stretch them to both sides, and finally place one hand on the chest while pushing the other arm forward.
The document discusses industrial robots. It describes that the first industrial robot was created in 1961 by George Devol and was called Unimate. Unimate was made in New Jersey, USA. Industrial robots can perform labor tasks, are precise, and decrease risks to human workers. However, they lack creativity and feelings. Industrial robots affect issues like unemployment (social impact) and decreased costs (economic impact).
The author sanded their doorstop using a sand board to smooth its edges. They broke their fingernail twice while sanding due to the dangers of using the sand board. The author worked to make their doorstop smoother in preparation for painting it, though painting proved difficult and they redid it several times before changing their painting plan.
The student made several doorstop designs and chose to make one with a rounded shape featuring their favorite band's logo. They selected wood of appropriate thickness and used various saws and sanders to shape it into a circle. The next steps will be filing the edges smooth and painting the finished doorstop. Communication and following safety instructions were important during the project.
The document describes painting a doorstop. The author spent most of their time painting the doorstop with acrylic paint and changing the design because drawing a circle was difficult. They used a paint brush, acrylic paint, nail block, and cardboard to paint, and a sand block and sandpaper to sand surfaces. The author changed the original design significantly due to issues painting a circle. They need to do more sanding and painting carefully with details. The lesson was enjoyable but painting was frustrating due to imperfect color and application.
1) The student worked on smoothing and defining the edges of their wooden doorstop by filing and sanding it into a perfect circle.
2) They used a file to smooth the edges and a sand board to smooth the flat surfaces.
3) The student helped a friend use the disk sander and feels proud of turning a piece of wood into a doorstop, showing the learner profile of caring.
