Ecosystems are composed of living things like populations of different species that make up a biological community, as well as nonliving physical factors. All energy in ecosystems ultimately comes from the sun and is transferred between organisms, with producers like plants harnessing solar energy, consumers eating producers or other organisms, and decomposers breaking down dead organic matter. Ecosystems can change due to natural causes such as drought, disease, fires or overpopulation, or due to human activities including various types of pollution and construction.
