3. INTRODUCTION
 Developing countries have the highest demand for steel
reinforcement concrete, but often do not have the means
to produce the steel.
 In recent years, many researchers around the world are
begun to explore the use of low-cost and low-energy
substitute construction materials.
 Among the many possibilities for such substitutions,
Bamboo, which is one of the fastest growing plants, has
got a great economic potential.

5. SELECTION OF BAMBOO
The following factors should be considered in the
selection of bamboo for use as reinforcement in concrete
structures.
 Use only bamboo showing pronounced brown colour.
This will insure that the plant is at least three years old.
 Select the longest large diameter culms available.
 Do not use whole culms of green, unseasoned bamboo.
 Avoid bamboo cut in spring or early summer. These
culms are generally weaker due to increased fiber
moisture content.

6. PLACEMENT OF BAMBOO
 Bamboo reinforcement should not be placed less than 1%
inches from the face of the concrete surface.
 Reinforcement should be evenly spaced and lashed
together on short sticks placed at right angles to the main
reinforcement.
 The tires can be made with vegetation strips.
 Spacing of the stirrups should not exceed 6 inches.

7.  The same mix designs can be used that are normally used
with steel reinforced concrete.
 Concrete slump should be as low as workability will
allow.
 High early – strength cement should be preferred to
minimize cracks caused by swelling of bamboo in case if
seasoned bamboo is not water – proofed.

8. PLACEMENT OF BAMBOO
 Bamboo reinforcement should not be placed less than 1
half inches from the face of the concrete surface.
 The clear spacing between the bamboo rods should not e
less than the maximum size aggregate plus ¼ inch.
 Reinforcement should be evenly spaced and lashed
together on short sticks placed at right angles to the main
reinforcement.
 The ties can be made with vegetation strips.
 Spacing of the stirrups not exceed 6 inches.

9. ADVANTAGES
 STRENGTH : Strong naturel fibre, when cultivated ,
harvested, prepared and stored properly.
 FLEXIBILITY : Due to it’s flexible nature, it can be
used for archways and other curve areas.
 EARTHQUAKE RESISTANCE : High shock absorption
makes it particularly used in earthquake - phone areas.
 LIGHTWEIGHT : Building with bamboo can be
accomplished faster than building with other materials.
 COST EFFECTIVE : Especially in areas where it is
cultivated and readily available.
 DURABLE : It is long lasting when properly harvested
and maintained.

10. LIMITATIONS OR DRAWBACKS
Following few considerations currently limit the use of
bamboo as a universally applicable construction material :
 JOINTING TECHNIQUES : Although many traditional
joint types exist, their structural efficiency is low.
Considerable research has been directed at the
development of more effective methods.
 FLAMMABILITY : Bamboo structures are not fire
resistant and the cost of treatment.
 SPLITTING : Low strength along the fibres causes it to
split or crack.
 LACK OF DESIGN GUIDANCE AND
CODIFICATION : The engineering designs of bamboo
structures has not yet been fully addressed. There is a
little or no data containing specifications of bamboo.

11. CONCLUSION
 Based on the research of bamboo obtained in universities
and other institutes around the world, the first norms for
bamboo were created by determining the physical and
mechanical properties of bamboo.
 These norms have been evaluate by international code
council and will be included in the ISO norms in near
future.
