The Balkan Wars consisted of two conflicts in the Balkan Peninsula in 1912-1913. In the First Balkan War in 1912, Serbia, Montenegro, Greece and Bulgaria fought together to liberate territories from the Ottoman Empire, successfully gaining independence for southern parts of their lands. However, tensions arose over territorial divisions agreed in the 1913 Treaty of London, leading Bulgaria to attack its former allies in the Second Balkan War. Though briefly successful, Bulgaria was pushed back by Serbia, Greece and Montenegro. The Balkan Wars increased Serbia's prestige and territory but also sowed discord that would lead to greater conflicts.
